If you haven't heard of The Weakend by now, I'm telling you right off the bat to check them out. This fabolous five-some from Detroit really has something to offer to the music community. They have been compared to the likes of Fall Out Boy and Rufio, but if you ask me, they are much better. If I were a betting man, I'd bet that these guys are going to be huge. If I'm wrong, then the music scene really is in a more terrible state than I thought. Anyway, on to the review.
The opening track, 'This Is For The Understanding That We'll Never Be Understood', is a very strong opening song. While some of the lyrics are pretty cliche, 'Take this blade to your ***ing wrist, because the edge of a razor talks better', they do have their own spin of the cliche. And the ones that aren't cliche, are quite good, 'Can someone pass me another glass of gasoline? I can't wait until I breathe flames that burn every precious memory'. On top of that, Andrew's vocals really shine in this song. The second song, 'You've Got Style, Kid. You've Got Style', is probably the best written song, lyrically on the album. 'We'll bring their dental records with us as a reminder. We'll pave the way for aspiring assassins and lovers towards their fates'. Really great line right there. While great lyrically, I think this song is really lacking musically. It's definately the weakest on the album, but this is a really strong album. The fourth song, '...Like Songbirds, Crunching Numbers...', is my favorite on the album. This is where everything seems to come together. The vocals and the guitar stand out especially to me on this track. It really shows Andrew's vocal range, and alot more talent musically. The lyrics are pretty solid in this song too.
All in all, this is an amazing album. Weighing in at just under 33 minutes for a 6 track EP is not bad at all. My only gripe with this album is having to wait for the next one, it really is that good. I recommend this cd to anyone with any taste in music. I really don't see anyone being disappointed with it.
