3.5 great | Alabaster Jones | January 19th 17 | A little screamo/post-hardcore gem that was lost to the new millennium, Capillary Lockdown was the debut for a short-lived and overlooked band from Knoxville known as The Red Scare. Most people's knowledge of the band doesn't extend past the split they did with Orchid, and that's truly a shame given the quality of the material found here. The production on this thing is pitch perfect and improved in every way from the split, with a loud bass presence, a clarity to the guitars that retains rawness, and a lively punch to the drums. The songwriting, while wholly solid, isn't the most creative for its time, but everything sounds so great that it's not a huge issue. It constantly toes the line between screamo and post-hardcore, showing how closely related the two genres are while simultaneously giving transparency to their differences. Ultimately and unfortunately, the band and this record especially remain overlooked by the vast majority, but those that love screamo and post-hardcore will definitely find something to like should they choose to explore this.
