Review Summary: Diamond
So when it comes to MitiS, you probably know what to expect. The Pennsylvanian, Joe Torre made quite a reputation in the past few years, with his big hit ‘Born’ and the same titled EP, and got really good reviews on his stage performances. He got evolved ever since, gaining more and more respect from fellow artists and critics as well, but that doesn’t matter anymore. Because whatever is your current opinion on MitiS, this is the album that is going to make him your favorite Electronic Dance Music artist (see the clever capital letters there?). My summary was Diamond and for a very good reason. This album is a Diamond in the aspect that it’s small (even for an EP with its four tracks) but yet it’s so perfect.
Since MitiS turned his back on "hard dubstep" and started making Chillstep, I watched him with excitement. Because raised up to be a Classical piano player, if he knows something, it is making a melody. And ever since I was pleased with what I've heard. This guy presented track after track with amazing quality and beautiful sounds. But this time he hit the peak. He managed to perfect all of his tracks to the top and made these four, the essential tracks to describe him as an artist.
The album starts with 'Vulnerability', and from this title you expect something touching something intimate. And my God this track delivers on this expectation. The track starts with a really simple EDM buildup with only a small plucking sound foreshadowing the greatness to come. But then the leadup comes. A bursting Pluck styled synth starts to come in fusing with the small high notes and a warm bass making a cozy loving "drop". Then it all goes away to give its place to a piano and a deeper pluck slowly building up to a higher and higher tone. And there it comes. The second drop erases everything you thought about the track or MitiS before. An extremely powerful and uplifting synth kicks in with a beautiful and somewhat heartbreaking melody to put the crown on the prince, making it a king. If I sound a bit too fanboy-ish, it's because I am. After being disappointed so many times by EDM nowadays, this track itself gave my faith back in the genre, showing: there are still wonders out there.
Then comes "Living Color" as the title track of the album you look at it with expectations again and u feel it failing. You feel it failing because the track sounds like a Breezes 2.0 in the beginning so to turn it this way: a simple Liquid DnB track. But magic comes again in the second drop. Im not gonna spoil it (seriously now think about this: how can a WRITTEN review spoil a MELODY?) but it turns into something extraordinary, however it still feels a bit "low level" after "Vulnerability", but it is an extremely personal opinion, because if you prefer Liquid DnB, then there is a high chance, that this is going to be the perfect track in your eyes (or ears, whatever).
Then we arrive at "Escapade". Despite the strange name, this track starts EXTREMELY GENERIC! It starts with a soo typical start that it almost made me question who made it. But don't let it fool you! After the intro the track turns into a really strong track with the fact that its drop is not a 4 or 8 bar loop but with a little change every 4 beat all 128 beats of the drop are unique in some way, yet bonding into one beautiful curve. It flows nicely, and it is maybe the most 'club-friendly' track he ever made.
Then we arrive at the final track of the EP "WildFlower" the first thing you notice is that it’s called a 'Special Mix'. And it is. If you want to argue which is the best track of this album, I'm sure you will find quite a few people who will claim that this is it. It's a strange piano-based, liquidish track with a beautiful melody sprawling Arps haunting synths fading in and out, waking up feelings you never thought an EDM track could wake up. Perfect ending for the EP that’s for sure.
So overall this EP is everything you can ever wish for if you like the style and even if you don’t know what Chillstep, or Lovestep, or Liquid DnB is but you want to prove for yourself that there is still hope in EDM and the future is not the 'x ft y ft z - *Random objects name*. (w remix)' style music. I'm giving it 4.5 only for one reason: Mitis is making this style of music for 2years now, and he can become repetitive (still I wouldn’t say boring), due to the fact that his tracks overall can sound way do similar. It’s time to evolve. With WildFlower he proved that he can twist on the formula to achieve something more than a fuzzy bass with a loving melody. But again for guys and girls like me who love his style this EP is a big gift, and the other pile of wood on the fire that burns our hearts with excitement for the next.
