3.5 great | Voivod STAFF | July 27th 14 | With their debut album/EP (with 3 tracks clocking at 27 minutes, I leave you to decide haha) Samples of Reality, Morpheus Tales draw a primary, yet adequately detailed map of psychedelic black metal, the way they envision it. Core influences come from black metal acts that took the genre to the next level, namely Dodheimsgard, Arcturus, Satyricon, as well as avant-garde prophets like Celtic Frost (mostly in the clean vocals). However, band shows a legitimate penchant for innovation, when, for example, it adds some unexpected, but totally fitting "belly-dance" oriental passages within "Hymn To Will". Along with Hail Spirit Noir and Spectral Lore, Morpheus Tales is yet another Greek psych black metal outfit to keep an ear to.
