Their selftitled debut record and the follow up Outta Sight/Outta Mind were already pretty good. With Smoke&Mirrors they managed to refine their sound and reach out into different directions. I can only recommend this.

After releasing two brilliant albums riding a wave of hype, The Datsuns on this record just sound lost in comparison. Gone is the brash, snotty attitude and classic rock jams of their self titled album, and gone is the brilliant bubblegum Ramones-esque sound of their second effort. All that can be heard here is a band that just sound lost and bereft of ideas from first track to last. The Datsuns could perhaps have gone far, but on the back of this album they can easily be branded as just another one of those NME bands. A dull and disappointing listen.
