Review Summary: Wait a second... I thought Chuck Schuldiner was dead?

It’s been half a decade it seems like since anything worthwhile has been released in the Melodeath genre. After the collapse of the Children of Bodom, Dark Tranquillity’s disappointing We Are the Void and the opening of In Flames’ post-Clayman assembly line of half-assed albums, no stand-out band has risen to pick up the slack.

While unfortunately it looks like Mordium won’t be the band to fill that void since they decided to disband shortly after releasing this one self-titled debut, they did leave behind some very solid and entertaining material that fans of the genre will enjoy.

The album starts off with a cheesy and cheap-sounding instrumental intro that most listeners will end up skipping on just about every subsequent listen, but recovers quickly with a solid opener in ‘Frigid Ice’, containing a main riff that sounds like something straight off of Opeth’s Orchid or Dark Tranquillity’s The Gallery.

Apparent from the first verse, the vocals sound strikingly reminiscent of The Sound of Perseverance-era Chuck Shuldiner with the ear-piercingly high-pitched but understandable screams. Just like on the final Death album, this vocal style will get a bit annoying when listening to more than 3 songs in one sitting, but it ultimately suites the music well even without Schuldiner’s philosophical lyrical wizardry.

I recommend listening to this with a set of stereo speakers or in your car instead of on headphones due to the production, the vocals and drums sounding way louder than the guitars with the vocals already being loud and harsh in nature. The same type of production the earlier Children of Bodom records and many other bands that use similar guitar tones suffer from.

The third track Echoes of Existence is one of the clear highlights on the album containing a catchy guitar lick that’s repeated twice at the beginning and end sections of the song and a solid main riff to support it. Tracks 4-6 are where most of the filler material is placed. Overall none of these songs are particularly bad, but have confusingly awful sections in them like the clean-ish vocals in Norther Dawn that bring the album to screeching halt almost.

To consolidate, the clear stand out on the album Eclipsed by Darkness comes out guns-blazing with some pounding, excellent drum work and a tasteful guitar riff backing it, culminating with an incredibly slick-sounding guitar solo concluded by a vicious held-out scream. The final two tracks are very good, both boasting multi-minute jam sessions but this is the true climax of the album to me.

If you aren’t already a fan of Melodic Death Metal, this sure as hell won’t defect you into one. In fact it’ll probably make you hate the genre even more as it’s way more over-the-top and in-your-face vocally than most Metal frontmen end up sounding. It’s nothing ground-breaking or genre-shatteringly different, just a solid release that we haven’t seen in this genre for some time.

Highly recommended to fans of the first three Children of Bodom albums or Dark Tranquillity’s earlier work.

Didn't put a whole lot of time into this just wanted to write up a quick straight-forward review to bring some sort of attention to this album.

Someone else give it a listen and write a review if you disagree.

How do I edit my reviews there's a couple of spelling errors in here I want to correct.

I might write up a couple more of these things for albums that aren't getting enough attention... constructive criticism is appreciated.

I was surprised to not even find Mordium in the database at all usually Sputnik salivates over this type of album the week it's released.

Eclipsed by Darkness has 50,000 views on Youtube now it wasn't lost in a sea of under-produced albums or anything.

Ignoring how wrong that is, don't start your reviews with generalizations. It immediately sets the rest of the review up to make further unfounded claims.

I mean, I don't like melodeath, but it's damn confounding to say 'no good melodeath has been released in half a decade', and then say that the bands keeping it alive were bands that have been dead artistically for over a decade

The only recent at least partially Melodeath album I can recall liking is Dark Tranquillity - Fiction but that wasn't anywhere near as Melodeath-sounding as The Gallery.

If there was a good straight-up Melodic Death Metal album released past 2005 besides this I'd love to hear it because I sure as hell haven't found one.

I liked Since the Day it all Came Down but wasn't a huge fan of Above the Weeping World personally. Didn't put out the same type of chilling atmosphere. Are the most recent two any better?

Be'Lakor's material is pretty top-notch. If you're into the folkier side of things, Eluveitie's Spirit and Slania were pretty damn good. And of course, Amon Amarth release a solid slab of melodeath every two or three years. That's just scratching the surface

^I need to give that one another listen wasn't feeling it the first time around but I definitely felt like I was missing something.

What I've heard from Eluveitie is too corny for my taste flute guy rules though. Haven't gotten around to that newest Amon Amarth yet but I did enjoy the first and last two songs off of Twilight of the Thunder god... didn't sound like something I'd classify as "Melodeath" though using The Gallery as the standard for it.

the standard? what? gothenburg melodeath is only one style, not the end all be all definition of it. listen to Intestine Baalism. they're melodic death metal, too.

Eh I consider all of the viking-sounding shit a separate movement from Melodeath but if you consider them one in the same then sure something good has been released in this genre in the last 5 years.

Someone else give this a listen and rate it. Death is among the most worshiped bands on here but when his long lost brother does the vocals on a new album it slips under the radar I'm confused.

this vocalist has neither the charisma, nor the force, of Chuck. he's similar, but unlike chuck, he always sounds strained. it's pretty standard melodeath behind it.

also that's a narrowminded opinion. melodeath is a broad genre - gothenburg, like i said before, is merely a style. Carcass is melodeath, but they're not gothenburg.

Ugh debating what bands fit into certain sub-genres ad-nauseum is pointless especially when it was only a two paragraph argument I made it's not like I wrote this entire review specifically to bitch about how bad the last 5 years have been for melodeath. There isn't any info about this band or it's members available on the internet so I couldn't think of anything else to use as an introduction.

I enjoy the vocals on this album about as much as I did the vocals on The Sound of Perseverance. Yeah he doesn't sound quite as natural or have as much power behind his voice as Chuck did but it has that same exact high-pitched frequency to it that no other vocalists I've come across can match.

Considering these guys were only sophomores in high school, they were very talented.

The guitar work is pretty unheard of for that age. The only other person I know of who could play like this that young is Jeff Loomis.

This band was started by five high school guys from Encinitas California in 2008. The band broke up once they graduated from high school and all headed off to college.
