Alien & Obsidian sounded so damn good production wise.... I guess they didn't have time to produce this EP themselves?

Either way i think it was a mistake, would've been better off just waiting if they couldn't

Could just be the band cheaping out, or honestly just being clueless regarding sound. Sometimes a worse production can also be more expensive so maybe they are as disappointed as we are.

Oh Putney was the producer. Since he has quite a good reputation perhaps they just didn't wanna challenge the production job? I'm just sketching scenario's here, perhaps we'll find out if the band gets a question about it from a more official channel.

Well i mean Alien & Obsidian were self-produced so they clearly aren't clueless. I'm guessing they were trying to save time getting Putney to do it, and didn't wanna challenge his skills.

No now you are just lying. Mixing of Obsidian was done by Adam Getgood and mastering by some other guy, forgot the name. I very much doubt that Alien was also mixed and mastered by someone in the band.

I do understand however that 'production' is a very broad term. Sometimes production means completely doing all the recording, songwriting feedback, backing samples/tracks, and mixing mastering. Sometimes it means doing only the recording, songwriting feedback, and backing samples/tracks, but you let someone else do the mixing/mastering.

nolly also did the mixing for alien

guessing nl just treat "self producing" as them tracking everything and having someone else on the faders. cant think of anyone in this tier who self masters their work tho (but would be very interested to be corrected on this)

I'm not "lying" or trying to lie. You can get debate over semantics but on wiki & discogs it says they are credited as the producer.

I totally get production is a broad term so I don't know how much they actually did. All i know is that for me even beyond the mixing/mastering on this EP I feel like none of the recorded instrumentation or vocals sound as good in comparison.

the classic “on wiki it says […]”

I mean yeah on the wiki it also says that mixing and mastering is done by Adam and someone with a bit of a difficult name to remember respectively. A lot of a bad recording can be fixed in the post-processing (mixing/mastering) so in my opinion, those last two processes have the most impact on the sound of a record. Of course, if you record with a toaster it is hard to correct but that usually doesn't happen in this genre. @onion you could say Periphery did everything themselve since their bass player was also the production engineer (Adam Getgood). Also some bands that Will Putney was involved in instrumentally of course 'did everything themselves'. Those are easy examples though, I'm sure there are more.

Oh yeah of course I cannot forget Porcupine Tree (Steven Wilson) and Killswitch Engage (Adam Dutkiewicz)!

oh actually doesn't seem like he did the mastering. According to the credits Adam Dutkiewicz did neither. Makes sense though, mastering is such a tedious process and I guess on a professional level it has to work for all kinds of play and different release formats.

Also, how the fuck is Periphery not a djenty band lol

You honestly might be completely right Beardog on the mixing & mastering making that much of a difference.

I could be wrong but based on the credits I just kinda assume at the very least NL was less involved in the production process this time around and that could've had some type of a impact. It might not even really matter though

I honestly think production (recording-wise) does not really make an audible difference. Most recordings in modern music aren't optimized and just replaced by samples anyway.

"Also, how the fuck is Periphery not a djenty band lol"

i think you misread me if you interpreted me following up asking about periphery as excluding periphery lol

but yea i was largely inquiring because mastering is such a different game
