Saor Guardians4.0
Falls just short of his last release but Andy Marshall sure has his finger on the very pulse of what Saor is. Guardians adds to a sure legacy being built from record to record. Falling just short of an hour's run time it's easy to get swept away in these compositions.

Slipknot .5: The Gray Chapter2.5
Finds it annoying that my original (and valid) soundoff wasd. It's hard to find thoughts that cohere on any level with Sputnik's elitism. .5 The Gray Chapter is not the album it was hyped up to be, after a six year break, but it's far from being a 'bad' release. Slipknot teeters on the same formula with new blood and the surprising "Killpop" actually highlights the new record.
Machine Head Bloodstone and Diamonds3.5
Say what you will about Machine Head's career, the up's and down's are on a steady bell curve in a general ascent. Sure, they'll never make another The Blackening again, but neither will they return to the early days. Bloodstone and Diamonds brings back accessible track times with only a mere couple extending on the seven minute mark. Flynn's vocals aren't any surprise, nor is the new inclusion on bass. Some stand-outs include: Sail Into The Black, In Comes The Flood and Imaginal Cells.

So many with an unwillingness to understand. U2 have earned the name as a staple in music. With more staying power than the previous releases it's clear that Eluveitie have a lot more to offer until their pool of talent runs dry. Origins picks up where Helvetios left off, bombastic rhthms and constant melodies interplay with the group's harsh growls. It's catchy, it's infectious - - a ride from start to finish. If there are any flaws to be found, it's in the band's ability to be completely comfortable with their sound.

Light the Torch The Beauty of Destruction3.0
Despite the ever-growing hype train from the ashes of former Killswitch Engage frontman, Howard Jones and the other various artists joining on this new moniker, The Beauty Of Destruction leaves something to be desired. Devil You Know releases 47 minutes of passable metalcore filled to the brim with the nuances that made Jones' stint with KsE so successful. The Beauty Of Destruction is formulaic, but delivers everything it was meant to. 'For The Dead And Broken' stands as a distinguishable highlight.

A change up in members doesn't shake the foundations of Enthroned's music. At the same time, there's no 'real' disappointment as the new blood holds pace with the band's back catalog. 'Sovereigns' is another bombastic slab of black metal with a modern infusion. It's dynamic and shifts enough to maintain interest.

Nails Abandon All Life4.0
Got seventeen minutes? Of course you do. Abandon All Life is the sultry hard-hitting sonic onslaught of oppressive heaviness. Keep in mind that short was never meant to be ?sweet? on Nail?s sophomore ?full-length?. From top to bottom (no matter how short that may be) Abandon All Life ensures the utmost of intensity highlighting the gift of Todd Jones behind the microphone. A fury rarely seen and upheld over the course of ear-splitting riffs and semi-thundering drum patterns gives life to a release over before it can be fully processed. See ?In Exodus? for proof that ?heavy metal? is real and relatable in today?s music industry. There?s no remorse, no guilt, no waiting period or white flag signalling the retreat. Nails have come to place their boot on the neck of the hardcore genre, tying in some truly ferocious chops along the way.

A perfect mood setter for days dry and windy. The mood is bleak but somehow the setting provides a stark beauty in a barren wasteland. It's times like this when you can fully understand why the bands of this genre spend so much time focusing on what others usually miss.

Just saw this compared to a 2.0 version of Metallica. Threw up a little bit. Now that's all good and fine if you're willing to throw the band into the same boat. Yes, the run time is huge, but how could you not grace such a massive record without the time needed to allow for full expression? Trvth is a modern take at 70s inspired movements shaped with precision and crafted down to the "tee". The album is beauty rolled, twisted transcending the norm. rfree download - http://trvth.bandcamp.com/album/black-horse-plague

Darkthrone The Underground Resistance5.0
Who could fault Darkthone for doing what they do? Certainly there is nothing surprising going on here, but that's okay we don't need surprises. Darkthrone write the music they want to write.
Watain The Wild Hunt3.0
Watain release something just better than acceptable. Who would've thought they would bring a little Metallica to their modern day black metal, no, I'm not talking a case of the Hetfield "Yeah's", rather the mellow ballad somehow highlights the album.
Ataraxie L Etre et La Nausee4.5
Cult of Luna Vertikal II3.5
Four tracks with one remix, it's not an expansive full-length release but its merits are deserved. Play it off the end of Vertikal (1) and the atmosphere matches the first. A display of self-ness, presented by a band that didn't want it any other way.

Sun Devoured Earth A Static Life3.5

Chimaira Crown Of Phantoms2.5
Time for Chimaira to hang up their gear. This is too streamlined, for a band that's always used hooks this is over the top almost to a commercially viable, pop/radio level. It doesn't help when the groove has less edge, less gusto, the aggression is gone for a band who really should have been able to do better than this.
Fleshgod Apocalypse Labyrinth3.5
The technicality's still here, the pace is maintained and the symphonic is as prominent as ever. It's not perfect, this combination will always clash heads but it seems that Fleshgod Apocalypse are finally putting the two together in a manageable and interesting form. The album does what it needs to and well, but the almost fifty-five minutes of symphonic cliches tied over a melodic tech-death instrumental effort does tire the listener. It's got room to grow, just not a lot.

Hope Drone Hope Drone4.0
Australia's Hope Drone marks an excellent entry into the world of hybrid post-black metal. It's gritty, clean transcending the typical "pretty" sounds peppered in the genre. It's not for light listening, these four tracks were made with intent, and intent is surely given.

Ghost (SWE) Infestissumam3.0
Album leaks and Sput's userbase goes wild. Sure enough Ghost's second release is a steady beast but it just like the Archille's heel, it doesn't have the same impact as the debut. Tracks like Secular Haze, Year Zero (the album's singles) are standouts but the band did everything they needed to on the first release. Make no mistake, the album will Satan your socks off, but it will tickle your feet as it does so.

How minimal is this, how long can you sit still? And why the fuck don't people know about this band?
Until Death Overtakes Me Days Without Hope3.0
This one man minimalistic funeral doom metaler culminates a bit of everything found in his past release creating a quality listen from front to back. The album has flaws in bringing it all together and for some reason that's why the other albums fair better in terms of quality.

I may be pulling the trigger here a touch early, but this is your AOTY. It swirls, transcends, grabs, pulls, grows and takes a hold on the darkest parts of your emotions. It's a change from previous releases in more than a couple of ways. Track length suits a better all rounded sense and they have dropped the black metal intensity opting for a smoother post/experimental sound.
