Ty Segall Band Slaughterhouse | 3.5 |
Though Segall's voice rarely works in the genre he's trying for, this is another honest attempt at some old-fashioned rock'n'roll from the indie-sphere ala Cloud Nothings' 'Attack On Memory'. |
Future of the Left The Plot Against Common Sense | 4.5 |
Future Of The Left trade in guitar bark for lyrical bite, and what a bite it is. |
Bassnectar Color Storm | 4.0 |
Some superb mixing and bass addition on the 'nectar's part, though the seemless nature of the mixtape is what seals the deal. As mosh-pit bangers meld into slow-burn grind-n-bump anthems and back again, you know you're listening to something special. |

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo OST | 4.5 |
Though sometimes dragging at points, this soundtrack stands as a testament to Reznor & Co's continuing creativity and their minimalistic overthrow of hackneyed orchestral soundtracks the world over. Equal parts breathtaking and deeply disturbing, this behemoth will freeze you to the core. |
Future of the Left Polymers Are Forever | 4.0 |
The addition of a fourth member to the mix in FOTL makes for a harder, fuller sound and more interesting song structures. It's clear this is just a preview of what's to come from 'The Plot Against Common Sense', but what a preview it is. |
Future of the Left Travels With Myself And Another | 5.0 |
An economical, catchy, ripping punk-rock breed with a lyrical madman at the helm, "Travels..." is easily the most inventive album to be placed under the 'rock' genre in a long time. From the soaring guitar lines of "Arming Eritrea" and "Lapsed Catholics" to the more drub and brutal beats of "You Need Satan More Than He Needs You" and the excellent sing-along single, "The Hope That House Built", every track is listenable and full of energy. An album I'll be giving to my children. |

Sure as hell is the most consistently good thing Josh Homme or Dave Grohl has put their name to in four years, and should hold a place in any rock fan's library as a keystone in the future of the genre. |
