This is fantastic! The proggy parts and especially the vocoder reminds me a bit of Focus-era Cynic

I'm not even kidding, this is the best slam I've heard in a long time. An absolutely ridiculous feature list, bottomless riffs and gurgles, hysterical samples before the breakdowns...it's got everything. Top-to-bottom fun as fuck.

I've never been more confused by a band's trajectory...after two pretty great first records they released the dumpster fire of English Graffiti, then return with Combat Sports which I think is on par with their best. Then another pile of overproduced garbage with Back In Love City, before again falling back on their reverb-laden Britrock here. rDefinitely plays it safe, but we've seen what these guys consider "pushing the envelope" and it's not good.

The horror of remembering this is 17 years old was nothing compared to realizing they had the gall to rerecord it. This is disgraceful.
Panopticon The Rime of Memory4.5
I hate to just reiterate Coma but yeah, this feels like a culmination of everything Austin's done as Panopticon chiseled to a fine precision. Nothing against the last two records, but this definitely feels the most directed since Autumn Eternal. Better than Collapse? We'll see if nostalgia wins.
Genesis Owusu Struggler4.0

Yet another band just named Loathe, but they play a riff-heavy rendition of deathgrind that reminds me of one of my favorites, Mumakil (RIP)

I am unironically digging this a lot. Definitely not what I was expecting, this almost reminds me of a scruffier PtH, some Deftones influences.

Otep The God Slayer1.0
There is no excuse for being this deep in your career and releasing music that is this outright awful. Somebody tell Otep that the croaky toad voice works for quick snippets, not entire verses. And why bother covering a song if you have to change the chorus because of a lawsuit?? And then also make it dull as cat litter..

This is surprisingly great considering the boots it had to fill. It might even have a bit more staying power than Violence Unimagined, but time will tell.
Korgull the Exterminator Built to Kill4.0
Maybe I'm a little generous with my 4s but this absolutely rips. If you like speed metal or blackthrash or just fast riffs get on this immediately.
Jute Gyte Unus Mundus Patet4.0
Adam's best and most accessible black metal record in years. I always look forward to new BM Jute Gyte and this was a particularly happy surprise. If y'all Pitchfork black metallers are worshiping Liturgy's "sacred number" shit just know Jute Gyte did it first and better.
Prof Horse4.0
The most fun hip-hop album of the year so far, featuring both Redman AND Mr. Meth, and I had to add it to the database. SAD.

Scar Symmetry The Singularity - Phase II: Xenotaph3.5
Godflesh Purge3.0
Queens of the Stone Age In Times New Roman...3.0
This sounds so boring and tired?a 3 purely for benefit of the doubt after one listen, but probably more like a 2.5 honestly. Josh Homme used to be such a riff god and this is almost devoid of them.
Billy Woods and Kenny Segal Maps4.5
I think it is physically impossible for Billy Woods to miss, and he?s at his best with Segal. Slightly less dark and more ?traditional? than last year?s records, but equally poignant and potent.
Jessie Ware That! Feels Good!4.5
This is one of my most-listened records of the year and it's still absolutely fabulous. I've always loved Jessie but she's never made an entire album that's so delicious from top to bottom, dripping with ear candy and the classiest of innuendo.

I will call this disappointingly decent. One or two tracks stand out but none are truly fantastic, and there?s a lot here that feels under-executed. Lots of trios sound massive but here you can really feel the absence of a fourth or fifth member.
Black Country, New Road Ants From Up There1.5
Honestly, what is so good about this? The songwriting is insanely boring, the songs are long but go nowhere, the singer is grossly off-key and completely absent of power or presence. I was gonna give this a 2.0 but nah it's worse than that. Absolute garbage.

Not really amazing by many means?definitely has some riffs but ultimately seems like it?s not soaring above the new wave of deathcore, only barely scraping the top.

With the world social and political climate as it is, you figure GY!BE is gonna come out of their Montreal bunker for an album. The title is absolutely silly, but not surprising at all. What IS surprising is that this is easily their best since Allelujah, possibly better than that even.
Xiu Xiu OH NO4.5
Ok, not the only one who got the preorder early then haharThis is so utterly fantastic. You?d expect a full album of duets to falter by diminishing either the band or the collaborators, but this is so brilliantly composed on the part of all parties involved. Equally a wonderful Xiu Xiu record and a showcase of them playing beautifully with the influence of others.
Pupil Slicer Mirrors4.0
I first found this labeled as experimental death metal which is a lol, but it definitely is a fantastic amalgam of odds and ends from hardcore/grind/metal. Probably most comparable to Converge if you want to shoehorn it, but generally pretty singular as well.
Eyehategod A History Of Nomadic Behavior3.5
Surprised to be the first one here. I was hesitant for about two minutes, then BOOM the grooves caught me and I
found this thoroughly enjoyable. Mike sounds fantastic and venomous, and yeah just a great record, especially
being after 7 years.
Nick Cave and Warren Ellis Carnage4.0
This is MILES better than Ghosteen. Honestly we all know we?re probably not getting the punk-ish Blixa Cave anymore, and as far as his work with Warren this is a fantastic entry.

Blood From The Soul DSM-54.0
Undeath Lesions of a Different Kind4.0
At the very least, 2020 has been a damn decent year for music. As expected, this rips.
Emma Ruth Rundle and Thou May Our Chambers Be Full4.5
For such a gnarled, powerhouse sound they have on their own, Thou are ridiculously talented at tempering themselves to the different styles of their collaborators. Emma?s no slouch, and her presence is heavy throughout the sadly short record. Her desert-drone and haunting alto mixed with Thou?s murk shaved to a fine edge...potential AOTY, shoe-in for the top of the list.
SUMAC May You Be Held4.0
Of course this is divisive which is why I dgaf about the sub-4 average but I shall definitely do my part to boost it. More power to them on bringing new meaning to deconstructed. The record with Keiji Haino was a little too much but this hits a delicious sweet spot.

Greg Puciato Child Soldier: Creator of God3.5
?There?s some depth in here somewhere.?rYeah that pretty much nails my opinion.
clipping. Visions of Bodies Being Burned4.0
I would be amazed if this wasn?t mostly taken from the cutting room floor of TEAATB, but it?s so easy to ignore that when this is so damn solid and beautifully arranged. Don?t call it a B-sides.
ASAP Ferg Floor Seats II4.0
WhaaaaaaatrI?ve always liked Ferg?s voice and flow, but this has NO RIGHT going as hard as it does. No filler tracks, a killer feature list, and I keep coming back to bump this again and again. rFire.
Deftones Ohms4.0
Ah, another Sputnik study in ?What?s worse?: Worshipping a band no matter their quality of output, or being a whiny dick just because a band has that kind of clout??
Prurient Casablanca Flamethrower4.0
Best he?s done since Frozen Niagara Falls, definitely better than the average rating it?s sitting at as of this typing.
Napalm Death Throes of Joy in the Jaws of Defeatism4.5
Ok we are all admitting this squeaked then? Good.rThis slams. The riffs and songwriting are consistently delicious and just as visceral as a younger ND. There?s definitely even some experimentation with slower and more programmatic sounds which I think they pull off FANTASTICALLY well, and I was surprised. rHell of an album, shoe-in for the AOTY list

Have never cared for Trivium, not even back in my newbie days when they were first dropping albums. For some reason I checked this out and keep coming back to it though...
Ulcerate Stare Into Death and Be Still5.0
This wasn?t overhyped or overinflated. After multiple listens SIDABS just became more obviously the biggest leap forward Ulcerate have made since Everything Is Fire. They?ve a cemented a new morphology of death metal with a sound and style that is pretty inarguably theirs, and this record is them finally perfecting it.rHard to find anything to complain about with this.

ominous, occultist black metal and promise of more

Certainly speckled with poorly-executed attempts at something they?re...just not, but overall I?m baffled by how strong the majority of these songs are. I listened to this on a whim and I keep finding myself enjoying several tracks over and over.

Slipknot We Are Not Your Kind4.0
By far the most solid album they?ve put out since Vol. 3, and if not for my overwhelming nostalgia for that record I?d say this is superior. Not a single sloppy track, plenty of ?back to basics? Knot with Corey doing some pseudo-raps actually along the lines of his self-titled flows. Whichever DJ stepped up to the plate killed this record, I?ve been saying they learned how to use Sid again but it could be Clown or Tortilla Face...? Even the ?ballads? have developed an eerie razor?s edge that finally sets them apart from Stone Sour in a distinct and appealing manner. rI?m a born Iowan so am I biased as hell? Yes. rDon?t give a fuck. Don?t ever judge me.
The Offering Home4.5
Was NOT expecting this to riff and smash the whole way through, and definitely not as hard as this goes. Catchy and heavy in all the right places, equal bits tech-death and ?progressive? metal and the vocalist(s) are genuinely talented and display it on a wide yet cohesive spectrum. rJust an incredibly awesome record on the whole, actual rating like a 4.2-3
Pathology Reborn to Kill4.0
Lol I?ve always enjoyed Pathology as a gem in a dungheap of slam, but this actually genuinely rips
Pig Destroyer Head Cage3.5
CHVRCHES Love Is Dead3.0
If they had released this first, then followed up with ?Every Open Eye? there wouldn?t be anywhere near this level of album-trashing. Even ?Forever? isn?t terrible, it?s catchy and listenable which is sort of all you expect from dreamy synth-pop. The songwriting and electronics aren?t as mature or interesting here, fewer layers and simpler leads. It?s fine, it just seems regressive enough it probably speaks ill for future releases.rUpdate: ?Never Say Die? is trash I could make in my living room
Machismo Severe Disconnect4.5
I traded Sutcliffe Jugend for this and I?m not even sorryrI also bought a replacement copy for dirt cheap so it?s kinda cheatingrThis is one of the best power electronics releases I?ve ever heard why do the nasty die fasty
Tiny Moving Parts Swell3.5
A savvier Silverstein with occasional finger-tapping _(?)_/
SWARRRM こわれはじめる4.5
Swarrrm?s always been pretty raucous and fun but this has no business being this pumpin? good, ?metal? AOTY so far (...until I finish the new Panopticon)

Desolate Shrine Deliverance from the Godless Void4.0
I know it's just the Greek name for those weird triplets that share an eye in the Disney Hercules movie, but I can NOT stop reading "The Graeae" as "The Grease" and it really ruins this whole album for me
Genocide Organ Remember4.0
I'm wearing Adam Thomas' old band's shirt and I'm 4'ing GO while playing a l337 noisehead. I have never been banned and to date no one has physically fought me
Merzbow Dust of Dreams4.5
Genius-grade sound manipulation. Japanoise is best
Incapacitants Default Standard4.0
One of the better Incapacitants releases, (the lower end the better with these two IMO) marking it high among the annals of Japanoise itself. Severely underrated here, apparently.
Incapacitants As Loud as Possible5.0
Demon Hunter Outlive3.0
Demon Hunter make their 3rd consecutive album of weak singles and bland ballads but still manage to rip some entertaining metalcore riffs, probably courtesy of the still-fresh guitarist trade-ins from a few years back
Danny Brown Atrocity Exhibition4.5
DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMMMMMMNNNN DANIEL.rlike really doe like really doe
Kayo Dot Plastic House on Base of Sky3.5
This is, I think, a more cohesive and confident version of the Kayo we got on Coffins. rAlso, has anybody else noticed the acronym is P.H.O.B.O.S.?
Breach It's Me God5.0
hoooooooooOOOOOLY FUUUUUUUUUUUUUCCCCXXKKKkkkkkkkkk!!!
Nadja Sv3.0
Actual rating probably a 3.8, good to see a return to form. Aidan's always at his best building one 45-minute-long monolith and Leah needs to just be noisy as fvk. Comparable to "Thaumogenesis," but a little less organic and more...industrial?
Equilibrium Erdentempel4.5
Equilibrium have not a shred of kvlt cred and their music is soaked in folk metal cliches like hurdy-gurdy and flute solos, but when it comes to consistently PRISTINE songwriting, hooks and melodies galore, all while being a ton of fun and quite frankly I could give a hoot less if they take themselves seriously, this album is a masterwork and "Uns'rer Floten Klang" is just...happiness in a tune.
Timber Timbre Hot Dreams4.0
Wow, this impressed much more than expected. Many stylistic throwbacks to pre-60's music, richly textured and satisfyingly gothic without eye shadow or tears.
