Hypocrisy Hypocrisy5.0
By far one of the best melodic death metal records ever released, Hypocrisy is a pure ballistic assault of punishing riffs, wicked guitar solos, beautiful keyboard melodies, perfectly executed vocals, a great variety of accessible tracks, and all around perfect musicianship at it’s best. With music and vocals that shine in influences of symphonic black metal, thrash, and brutal death metal, the album can easily be listened too by anyone who can stand harsh vocals and is highly recommended for fans of Soilwork, (old) Dimmu Borgir, (Clayman days) In Flames, Bloodbath, Opeth, and Dark Tranquility. Another thing to note about the band is their extremely controversial lyrics. Hypocrisy are definitely original in both their music and lyrical content, and have yet to release an album that hasn’t displeased me in the least.

This album is beautiful. Packed with 20 minute epics of psychedelic, ambient melodies that can lull a person into a state meloncholy equillibrium... or it can bring upon an atmosphere of devastating pressure and depression. The songs have very drug out feelings that actually do not get old one bit. The only downside to any thing on this CD is the unnessecary static used in Drowning In The Sun. Not for fans with little attention or lack of appreciation for depressingly slow progression.

The Dillinger Escape Plan Miss Machine4.5
Probably one of my favorite albums released in 2004, The Dillinger Escape Plan have created a near perfect masterpiece with their new album Miss Machine. Being the most pure definition of the popularly argued sub genre of grind and metalcore, mathcore, that I could find, the album proves that learning math in school can really be beneficial to a musician. With constant and ever changing riffs, time signatures, psychotic screeching, hardly decipherable lyrics, and pure chaos all around, this album is not for the typical listener. The only downside I could find in this album was the lack of variety amongst a lot of the heavy parts and the fact that it is rather short.

Children of Bodom Follow the Reaper4.5
Children of Bodom Hate Crew Deathroll4.0
The irony in me owning and complementing a Children Of Bodom album lies in the fact that I used to stereotype them for bad music because of their admittingly cheesy lyrics and rather unoriginal reaper album covers. The guitar work it beyond amazing, the drumming/ blast beats fit perfectly with the music. The vocals took a bit to grow on to me, cause the idea of power metal with black metal style vocals at first sounded absurd, but actually fit quite well when you get the concept. This band truly is a symbol of near perfection for any fan of power metal, ‘good’ forms of metalcore, certain forms of black metal, and certain forms of melodic death metal.

Children of Bodom Are You Dead Yet?3.0
Behemoth Demigod4.0
Behemoth, along with Nile, Bloodbath, and Hate Eternal, are my all time favorite brutal death metal bands. Having
started as a mediocre black metal band, Behemoth burst into the death metal scene, leaving a permanent mark on
the genre. Demigod is a perfect example of true brutal brutal brutal death. Every song is a nonstop onslaught
of vicious riffs with only some melodic breakdowns, and brutal, demonic roars from guitarist/ vocalist Nergal. The
only downsides to the album are the vocals in the fact that it is nearly impossible to understand anything Nergal
says even to the growl trained ear. Also, the enhanced CD music video for Conquer All came to me as a
disappointment because it is bluntly obvious that Nergal is lip sinking (which I hate when it’s done poorly). Aside
from those minor issues, Behemoth have an amazing album that is essential to any death metal collection.

If you ask me, all the abuse this album gets by In Flames fans is bull-crap. The album is superb in dark melody while still delivering some fast and brutal death metal riffs. Sure they made a dramatic change after Clayman, but that does not mean that they no longer make good music. If you ask me, this album is actually a lot better then some of their previous album due to it's great variety in music and song structure. There are some songs I can understand death-heads to really hate (such as Metaphor and Dawn Of A New Day), but those songs just show In Flames developing a brooder style of music in which makes them always increasingly an amazing band. ONE WORD PEOPLE, DIFFERENTUALITY.

I don't understand what the big hype about this band is. Sure, they are all great musicians and they make some good music, but they are not that amazing. Some of the songs on this album, such as the two singles, "Seabeast" and "Hearts Alive", but the rest to me sounds rather boring and not very dynamic at all. The guest appearence by Scott Kelly from Neurosis is a big thumbs up. Overall, I'd call this album a great addition to any metal collection, but not a major standout by any means.

A most unique album for the most unique of metal heads. These poppy, strange, and brilliant musicians managed to create an album of pure neurotic psychosis! Imagine Neonism era Solefald fronted by a fiesty female vocalist and playing occasional evil circus music. Stolen Babies is much like their fellow The End bands Unexpect and Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, only 3x better at songwriting. Every song has powerful oddball instrument dynamics and carry unique, thick atmospheres that personally scared me at first. The frontwoman has a very powerful, scrachy scream but backs it up with an equally powerful, beautiful singing voice. This album will surely leave a mark on all who listen to it with an open mind (or not).

With this album, every single song streams with perfection as the riffs, bass lines, arabic chants, tribal drums, lyrics (regarding the story of Noah’s Ark), and vocals (both male and female) in both English and Islamic dominate the album. I also consider this the best concept album I have ever heard, along with the best death metal releases of 2004. Even the filler tracks are worth listening too on the album, along with each separate track as they go through the story of Noah and his ark, finally ending with powerful epic track The Storm Still Rages Inside, which is then followed by a calm closer ending one of the best musical experiences I have ever heard.

Black metal lost one of it’s greatest players when Immortal broke up not long after their 2003 release Sons Of
Northern Darkness
. Immortal, though not the most purest of black metal, deliver some punishing riffs and dark
verses in their near perfect masterpiece farewell album. With some outstanding guitar riffs, amazing drum work,
and above par vocals, the only downside to the album is the guitar tone, which gets rather repetitive after awhile. I
have yet to hear any more of Immortal, but after listening to this album, I am anxious to get another one.

This is something that has left me very confused. How could an album like this be consider anything below maybe a 3.5? It has great guitar riffs, strong bass lines, great drumming and blast beats, and overall not so bad vocals. The atmosphere of the whole album has a very unique feel aswell. It is in my opinion that anyone who truly dislikes this album has not even heard it, or has and was just unable to accept the fact that this band can actually be worth a damn. Regarding my statement long past about this band being death metal was rather dumb and off, but not entirely true. Is it as good as real melodic death metal? Certainly not, but that doesn’t mean the band is bad in anyway.

Catch 22 is a departure from Hypocrisy’s normal death metal style and takes on an almost nu-metal outfit. But don’t let that make you sell this album short. Although the lyrics and song structure derive from the nu-metal genre, Hypocrisy still manage to keep their unique sound. The album was originally made for he soul purpose of releasing the band members inner anger. The album has some very catchy tunes, and is more in the lines of Soilwork’s form of melodic death metal then the dark, symphonic, and black metalish music style that Hypocrisy originally established a name for with their s/t classic 6th album.

This album is DARK. Set aside the fact that a lot of it is droneing death doom ambience, the album has a very dynamic and captivating feature to it, it's very moody and depressing as hell. The only downside is the song In The Mist, which is literally 16 minutes of white noise with some strange sampling. The true stand out on this album is This Dark Day, which opens us into Until Death Overtakes Me's dark world.
