Between the Buried and Me The Great Misdirect | 4.0 |
Highly polished and extremely ambitious, but with a little more reserve than their previous releases, The Great Misdirect is Between The Buried And Me's most progressive album to date.
Any BTBAM fans listening to this album will be happy to find that they have strongly retained their style - they are as aggressive and ambitious as ever. However, their death metal antics are more concentrated on The Great Misdirect than their previous albums. Between The Buried And Me have changed their song formula from their black and white genre shifts to a more fluid style. BTBAM were never known for their song coherence, and this album won't change their identity. However, BTBAM have started to ditch their rigid shifts in sound in exchange for more fluent, cohesive advances in sound and style. This makes The Great Misdirect BTBAM's most progressive album to date.
Death metal purists, fear not. Our favorite North Carolina axemen shred to death on this album. The drumming is arguably better than it's ever been, and Tommy's vocals retain the same balance of aggression and melody we've known him for. While this is more progressive than earlier releases, BTBAM do not sacrifice quility for accessibility.
For the fans who may have not been able to stomach BTBAM's earlier style, they may find themselves reborn into the band with The Great Misdirect. For all others, everything you know and love about BTBAM is retained and applied with a more stylistic and progressive tone.
And Swim to the Moon, it's just... yes. |

Old men living in the shadows of their former selves? This album should have been the one to cast Queensryche into utter irrelevance. Instead, they wrote their most mature and arguably most emotional album to date. It's an album for the patient, progressive lovers of music out there, and takes a good straight listen from top to bottom to appreciate the melodies, moods, and styles that describe the love, sorrow, and emotional strength it takes to be a soldier in war. The musicianship is excellent, being far from overdone yet enough to prove these guys still have sparks of genius somewhere in those noggins. It's progressive, paced and meaningful. If you thought Empire and Promised Land were anything near enjoyable, I'd recommend a buy for this. |

This is a good release from a band who are at their peak of their popularity after more than a decade of trying to break into the mainstream. The band's performance, fronted by Davey's excellent vocals, is pretty good to say the least. The tracklist caters to a new generation of fans, with most of the tracks appearing off of their latest two albums, Sing The Sorrow and Decemberunderground. Although the performance was well above average, that's about all this disc's got for it. Makes for a damn good listen for fans of their recent works, others won't find this all too interesting. As a big fan, this is my current CD rotation, so if you're like me I'd recommend a buy. |

Megadeth Peace Sells... but Who's Buying? | 4.5 |
Absolutely excellent album. This album avoids the pitfalls of many other thrash albums, which include unbearable vocals, recycled uninspired riffs, and unattractive shred-fests. Obvious Black Sabbath influences help Megadeth do their share in making Metal the giant of all music, and this album helps roll Megadeth to what is now the most consistent band in Thrash. Peace Sells... But Who's Buying? is borderline perfect, with very little that should displease the listener. |

This album will always remain among my favorites of all time. This album is the epitome of metalcore - all aspects of performance are executed with nothing less than perfection. Avoiding the popular trend to scream and churn out heavy, uninspired riffs, A7X puts life into all their songs and will assault you with some of the best riffs you have ever heard. The combination of riffs in "Second Heartbeat," from the intro to the solo, simply cannot be competed with. Shadow's vocals, which are often a topic of debate, are a hit or miss. I believe they fit the bill perfectly, as Shadows explores the soft side of his voice as much as his brutal scream. The main aspect of this album that makes it a classic is that it's truly memorable. The music is one of a kind, and the musiciansnip in every song on this disc is unexpectedly brilliant. A7X set the metalcore bar with Waking the Fallen, and in my opinion it has yet to be beaten. |

This album was a total shock for me. The cover art didnt appeal to me one bit, but the only reason I ended up buying this is because of my undying love for Iron Maiden, hoping this would sound similar. Bruce explored the genre of American hard rock/metal, and this outcome is just plain old rockin' awesome! No one can deny the small Maiden influence on the guitar work, but theres plenty of originality here. I recommend this for anyone who likes the rock genre. Standout track for me is Devil on a Hog (vocals, riffs, solo, all orgasmic!) |

I'm a fair classic rock fan, but mostly Im the kind of guy that has metal blasting on his ipod all day. But when I heard this, I was really blown away at the musical brilliance behind this album. It would be very hard for me to explain myself, this is like a mix of Dream Theater composition and Pink Floyd style with some jazz horns. It's not just another album, it was a showstopper for me. This band has more talent than almost any other band Ive ever heard. Aja is a stand-out track for me, it has to be my favorite classic rock song of all time. Give this a try or atleast download a song |

This is easily my favorite EP of all time. The musicianship is great and in some sense I find it is AFI's writing at best. This is a perfect balance between AFI's old fast-paced punk roots and their current gothic, progressive style. A definite must have for punk fans. Stand-out track for me was Totalimmortal, though all 4 songs are incredibly addicting. |

When it comes to great old bands making great new music, no one does it better than Iron Maiden. A Matter of Life and Death proves that the legendary British metal band are still all about making the best music on the planet. Every song contains the standard fresh, galloping riffs, juicy bass lines, and soaring vocals that the band has always been known for - however Maiden show that they progress as songwriters by writing 10 progressively-epic songs that make most rock today seem laughable. This album also reflects their ability to play live - their supporting tour for this album included playing the album in full. It was impressive how so much energy packed into this recorded album can be amplified even greater when played live. The record itself is fantastic - but when played live... stunning. Either way, this only proves that Maiden hasn't left their long legacy in the dust just yet, theyre still here to stay. This is more than great music, this is a continuation of the greatest legacy in metal history. |

I only have a few important words to say about this album.
If no one has ever heard previous Trivium, or any Metallica, the average rating would be higher. Much higher. If Metallica released this same album, it would have a pretty high rating. Unorginality has become too much of a factor. I still find this pleasing to my ears, and I don't see why I shouldn't judge the music by the music I hear. |
