Motley Crue Red, White, & Crue3.5
If this compilation consisted only of the first disc, then it would an easy 4/5. It contains pretty much all the great songs M?y Cr?ver did, which makes for a light-hearted and fun compilation full of some great hits, but disc 2 on the other hand is full of their weaker '90s songs, which bring the rating down to a 3.5.
Nas The Lost Tapes3.0
Decent compilation. The Lost Tapes starts off quite well, with Doo Rags through to Nothing Lasts Forever all being pretty nice songs, and then it takes a serious dive until the utterly fantastic Poppa Was A Playa. How that song didn't make it onto any of Nas' albums is mystifying, as it's easily one of the best post-Illmatic songs I've from him. Anyway, The Lost Tapes is worth picking up for any big Nas fans.
Daft Punk Musique Vol. 1 (1993-2005)3.0
A Daft Punk best-of will always make for an excellent collection of songs, but a couple of glaring omissions bring this one down. The fact that there are four tracks from the lacklustre Human After All compared to only three from Discovery is puzzling, and the absence of Digital Love is just criminal.

The Game The Documentary2.5
The Game isn't a bad Rapper, but really, with the amount of money that must have been thrown at this album in terms of production, along with 50 Cent's (alleged) ghostwriting, anyone could have made this album sound good. The production credits here pretty much read like a who's-who of mainstream Hip-Hop. Dr. Dre, Timbaland, Kanye West, Scott Storch, Just Blaze and even Eminem contribute tracks to the album, along with underground stalwarts Buckwild and Havoc.

As for The Game, like I said, he isn't bad, but he has a tendency to be pretty hit-and-miss. The first half of the album is pretty good, but after the title track the songs become a lot less interesting. It would also help if The Game could resist name-dropping NWA, Tupac or any other Rap legend in every second verse. For a fans of mainstream Hip-Hop you could do a lot worse but despite what The Game says, "Ready To Die, Reasonable Doubt and Doggystyle in one" this is not.

Kavinsky 19863.0
Solid Electro-House from yet another French DJ. 1986 is a repetitive yet enjoyable romp, with a slightly dark edge and a distinctly '80s vibe. If you're a fan of Justice, SebastiAn (who's remix here is probably the highlight of the EP) or any other artist from the Ed Banger stable then check it out.

Municipal Waste The Art of Partying2.5
Municipal Waste has predictably provided us with another solid Thrash release. If you're looking for a band evolving and expanding on their previous releases, look elsewhere, but if you're a die hard fan of Municipal Waste's previous efforts you'll probably find it caters to your needs quite nicely.
Raekwon Only Built 4 Cuban Linx...4.5
Repulsion Horrified4.0
Words cannot describe how intense this album is. From the fuzzy power chords that open 'The Stench of Burning Death' to the closing "Fuck!" of the title track, this album never lets up its chaotic assault on the senses. This album is a milestone in Extreme Music, and has been cited as a huge influence by legends such as Napalm Death, Carcass and Entombed. And make no mistake, this album is fucking fast.

Dream Theater Images and Words1.0
Megadeth Rude Awakening1.0
Slayer Christ Illusion1.0
It's definitely a step up from the lacklustre efforts on God Hates Us All and Diabolous In Musica, but yet again Slayer fail to deliver the goods to their legions of loyal fans (something they've failed to do since 1988's South of Heaven, really) Dave Lombardo's presence behind the kit helps, and the occasional Thrashy riff scattered throughout the album has promise. But overall, all but the most rabid of Slayer fanboys will find themselves wanting much more.

N.W.A. Straight Outta Compton3.0
Every time I listen to this album, it hurts to think how good it could have been. "Straight Outta Compton", "Fuck Tha Police", "Gangsta Gangsta", "Parental Discretion Iz Advised" and "Express Yourself" are all stunningly good songs, and if they could have produced 5 or 6 more tracks anywhere near as good as these then NWA would have easily made one of the best Hip-Hop albums ever. Straight Outta Compton still recieves that accolade in many places, and while it's certainly one of the most influential albums of the past 20 years, in the end it's just not consistent enough to really warrant it.

This is my first taste of Black Moth Super Rainbow, and it's very sweet indeed. On Dandelion Gum BMSR create dreamy, colourful Trip-Hop with some upbeat and cheerful overtones, which is a nice refreshment from Tricky and Portishead's dark and moody tunes. While it's a little long at 15 tracks, it's still an interesting listen. Recommended.

It's a shame this is overshadowed so heavily Illmatic. It Was Written sees Nas swapping DJ Premier and Large Professor for Trackmasters and Dr. Dre, creating one of the finest (and definitely the most underrated) mainstream Hip-Hop albums of the '90s in the process.

Nas Illmatic5.0
On Illmatic, Nas assembled a dreamteam of producers consisting of DJ Premier, Q-Tip, Large Professor and Pete Rock to create this masterpiece. The beats on the albums are an excellent example of grimey, mid-'90s New York Hip-Hop complete with haunting piano loops and jazz samples which are an perfect companion to Nas' lyrics. While four producers might sound like a recipe for incoherence, the team of producers manage to create a consistent atmosphere while retaining elements of each induvidual's particular style. Lyrically, Nas is in career best form, creating vivid narratives with strong lyrical substance. NY State of Mind is a definite highlight. If there's one Hip-Hop album I would not hesitate in recommending to any music lover, it's Illmatic.
