This is the most disappointing album for me so far this year. I've been afraid that Kieran was going to switch to house ever since There Is Love in You and he's finally taken the plunge. If you're into house this might be your favorite Four Tet album yet, but it unfortunately doesn't do much for me |

I don't see anything topping this for 2013 - this is a fantastic album. This is four excellent albums in a row. With Dawning, Mouth of the Architect have secured themselves a spot amongst the post-metal elite. No conversation that includes Isis, Cult of Luna, or Neurosis should ever exclude Mouth of the Architect. Check this out if you haven't already. |

This is a really unique black metal venture. AW borrows alot of civil war era musical technique... from the way certain passages are chanted to flutes and fiddles. Eastcoast USBM at it's finest. It's very epic in some places where the folk metal almost transcends to viking metal. I can't explain exactly what happens in Patriarchs, but it's one of the strangest black metal songs I've ever heard. Any fan of black, folk, or even viking metal should definitely check this. |
Oval Calidostópia! | 3.5 |
Markus Popp (of Oval) went to Brazil and recorded this 16 track collaboration with seven artists that he had never met before over a ten day period. Each day Popp would show up at the Goethe Institute and would be introduced to a South American singer participating in the project. They'd spend the remainder of the day recording, and Calidostopia! is the cumulative effort of those seven recording sessions. He utilized previously recorded and unreleased material in the production of this album. The album was then released for free, funded by the Goethe Institute and the Cultural Foundation of the State of Bahia. Only a producer as talented as Popp could possibly pull something like this so smoothly and naturally. The Oval aspect of the release is what primarily concerns me, however I am not disappointed that glitch takes the passenger seat here. It's not something I would normally seek out, but it's very cool for what it is. |

Matmos The Marriage of True Minds | 3.5 |
This is Matmos' most experimental foray so far. Glitch often gets bogged down when musicians attempt to stay within the confines of accessibility. The Marriage of True Minds was created without such reservation - it is coarse, abrasive, and whimsical to the extreme, and that is the very philosophy of glitch. There is very little consistency to the album; the tracks are short, disparate forays into various concepts that once ended are dismissed and a new direction is taken. There are fleeting moments of brilliance that come to rapid fruition, but they then wilt just as quickly. This hasn't gotten very much play from me this year, but neither has it fallen completely out of circulation. A worthwhile listen for an old fan, but not an appropriate introduction for someone trying to get into Matmos' work. |

Light Bearer Silver Tongue | 4.0 |
This website is ruled by trends. The new Darkthrone release is a shining example of that. Once so many people had rated the album a 5, it became difficult for anyone to rate it negatively. Alot of people who didn't even like the album rated it a 4, or 3.5, to be conservative. It couldn't possibly be a 2, because to so many others it was flawless. It is difficult to rate something without taking everyone else's opinions into consideration. This album has fallen foul to another trend, and the trend here is to dislike the album. Give the first and last track respect, and disregard the remainder. Well, I disagree. The entire album is fantastic. There are no bookends, every track is great. Light Bearer embraces the "post-" aspect of their music, and they take time to build crescendos and develop atmosphere. To the impatient, this causes the album to appear drawn out and boring. Nothing could be further from the truth. If you haven't listened to this, I hope you will disregard the trendy negativity and listen to it with an open mind. You will not be disappointed. |

Airs Rainclouds over the Remains of Hope | 4.0 |
This album is unarguably interesting. The black metal/shoegaze wave that has been sweeping over the scene may have found an emergent voice in Airs. The atmosphere is unmistakably black metal, yet the guitar's shimmering and the ethereal vocals bring to mind Slowdive or the Catherine Wheel. The songs are lengthy and show some post rock influence. The only drawback is a lack of consistency. Track two seems as if the beginning was chopped off during production, and track eight doesn't belong on this album at all. Despite those flaws, this is a very nice listen and this could be one of the better acts in its genre with a little more cohesiveness.
edit: I just listened to Gloomlights, and it looks like Airs has decided to change directions. Their music has no black metal influence at all, and reminded me of Blink182. Very disappointing. |
