Is anyone really surprised that Arca dropped the ball on this one?
Obviously I'm in the minority looking at most of the other ratings here, but barring &&&&& (I think that's all the ampersands) given its mixtape status, Arca was never going to be able to pull off the kind of statement that an LP needs to have to ensure survival. Hype derailed - I count 2 great songs, and one good one. The rest are nothing more than explorations in the kind of slo-mo drughype that he already perfected, and then bastardized.
You see this? This is my disappointed face |

Basement Jaxx Junto | 3.2 |
Junto is something of an enigma, in that the end result is not completely turgid in the way that 95% of long-delayed material by artists who mistake "hiatus" for "hibernation" tends to be. But it's also not the great return of one of the zaniest and machiavellian acts in house music either.
In truth, the album is the sound of a group in a state of flux. That the group in particular, who's path to stardom was dictated by their distaste for what they saw as "bland" and "robotic" dance pop music, should find themselves re-emerging into a world of chart-topping acts like Disclosure & Rudimental and immediately dust themselves off and pick up immediately from where they left off is the true marvel. Though it would be fair to say that the Jaxx have taken more than a few cues from today's current chart-risers (and keeping in mind that Basement Jaxx basically set the template for commercial house music), there's enough on offer here to recall the glory days of Remedy and Rooty (the truly excellent 'Mermaid of Salinas' wouldn't sound remotely out of place on the latter).
So while it's a joy to report that the duo haven't really missed a beat in terms of delivering on big room euphoria, Junto, while being a good album in a number of respects, is also curiously lacking in catchy hooks. It's a foot-tapping, knee-slapping jaunt into good old fashioned dance music, the kind whose poker face could only ever be lopsided, but there's little left by the end of it to mark any kind of a lasting legacy. |

NOISIA Purpose | 4.0 |
Perhaps the best thing to take away from Purpose is Noisia's stringent attention to
detail and uniformity. It's been some time since we've seen this Dutch trio so straight-
forward in their approach, and in their attempt to create such a streamlined release they've
hit upon a somewhat formulaic yet rewarding blueprint.
I'm not quite sure what the other soundoff is referring to with "their older underground
style", mainly because a) they never had an underground style, and b) if they did, this
isn't it. Purpose is still based upon the same principles that saw Noisia turn their
back on seminal tunes like 'The Tide' and 'Exodus'; the focus here is still very much on the
pummeling funk that Neosignal, the Virus crew, Project Trendkill and all the Vision
affiliates have been curating for the last 6 or 7 years. And while it's an old trick, it's
still a good 'un. Just don't come in here expecting the kind of genre epilepsy that Noisia
have played with in the past... this boiler room is open to one sound only

Couple of things here:
Firstly, fuck you Beatport for making me have to cue up these mixes myself.
And now for the cover:
1) YO ANDY, WHERE YOUR HAT AT MANE??
2) This looks like a bad Kaskade album
Despite cutting all his wax to the same tempo, and thus negating the need to beatmatch at all, Andy is still one of the greats. The kind of DJ who can knock out just about every commercial jump up drum and bass track from the last year or so (so, pretty much everything off of Ram then) and still knock it clear out of the park. If I had tints in my hair and referred to things as "molly", I'd be off my nut. If I had to be in the same club as said swine, well this is what should be playing |

In order to be excessive, one has to truly push the limits of excess. And Hide succeeds in doing this, more so than any of the dime-a-dozen filth merchants floating around with their tooth-rattling buzzsaws and synth strobes. Hide is a monument to decadence, with tongue wedged firmly in cheek. To write it off as "more of the same" is to miss the point entirely -- Paul McCartney on a dubstep track?! *cue David Caruso sunglasses*. All that can be said about this album is as follows: After the ringing in your ears slowly subsides, the only thought left is that cocaine is a helluva drug |

Blacklistt Blacklistt | 3.2 |
Aside from that abhorrent intro track (get rid of it, no white boy from NZ has any business whatsoever rapping), Blacklistt is a surprisingly decent album. It relies more heavily on melody than any kind of overt song structure or riffs, which is fine, except that certain songs seem to stall in between the bursts of energy that the group have attempted to perfect for some 10 years now. And when they do follow a pattern, the group seem to lose themselves while attempting to find something to do beyond the standard verse chorus, verse chorus syndrome - it certainly doesn't help that the guitarist relies more on undercurrents than directly leading the songs. Still though, Blindspott (I mean Blacklistt) are back, this time with a real drummer (even though he's now left the band as well), and a DJ who doesn't really do anything except throw a few vinyl scratches into the mix. If I was 14 and this was 10-12 years ago, I'd be happy. Sadly, I'm not, and this is 2013, so this curious time-traveling relic of an album is merely good. Still slightly better than End The Silence though, but the boys are still definitely denying their Hybrid Theory-era Linkin Park obsession and are still firmly entrenched with their love for the Deftones. |

Props to the engineer and whatever autonomous autobot worked on this, because they've literally stripped every single shred of life out of the instruments. This thing is produced within a fucking inch of its life. Also, gotta love the strings in the opening track - that's some true Michael Bay-esque cock-tugging there, making me think something epic might actually happen. Also we get it, you have a theremin, that doesn't mean you look any less like an idiot when you slap the air around it every 5 seconds |

I feel like I should love this; it's DjRum, which alone makes it a product of uncompromising ingenuity and creative inventiveness. But realistically, Seven Lies fails to fully capitalize not only on the (justified) hype surrounding Felix Manuel, but also on that delicate "post Burial" atmosphere that Manuel has so eagerly made his own. That gritty "noir-ish" fog that's slung itself so vividly over the London skyline is almost entirely absent here - as if long form has robbed DjRum of his almost shaman-like powers. By no means the greatest thing since sliced bread, but a tasty loaf nonetheless |

Actress returns from his soul searching, church-despairing R.I.P with more of the fucked-up glitch-riddled scarred and battered beat-making that made him famous in the first place. And while Silver Cloud might boast an impressive pedigree, it's also something of a taxing listen. But enough of this - lets talk about how Ghettoville is fast becoming the "blue steel" of the UK underground. "You gotta tame the beast before you let it out of its cage Billy" |

Biome Spawned | 3.8 |
I've never been the biggest fan of Biome, though my lack of admiration has never stemmed from the young producer's lack of talent - far from it in fact. Biome clearly has a knack for sound and rhythm, and I'm a fan of many of his ideas - I just don't think he has the nous to be able to carry a tune for 5+ minutes, simply because he lacks the kind of variation that's become all too apparent within this resurgence of dungeon-style dubstep. But in a few short years Biome has risen through the ranks, winning the hearts of many and signing with some impressive imprints thanks to his apparently impressive and winning formula.
Spawned's move into the kind of bleakhouse outlooks and cold ambigious techno of the more hermetically inclined European sect is by no means a surprising one though, and Biome is by no means the first dubstep producer to gaze longingly across the waters to Berlin - pretty much all of Scuba's Hotflush roster now considers themselves luminaries of Berghain's sound. What is surprising is how this new "sound" (I say sound because all of Biome's traits and cliches are still here in abundance) has opened up new ways for the producer to follow through on his early promises. This is easily the best Biome has ever sounded, and counting on production alone, this is some next level shizz. If he continues plowing his trade in this new vein, then you can consider me a born again Biome fan |

Ben UFO FabricLive.67 | 5.0 |
If Ben UFO's Rinse mix was the "future sound of London", then this is simply the future sound of sound itself. An absolutely ruthless mix from one third of the acclaimed Hessle Audio labelrunners, but also one that's not immediately rewarding. Ben takes the amorphous and genre-less sounds of London's latest and greatest and drops them into a murky ether, shaping them into hinges and linchpins that hold up an even greater sound when all glued together. One of the most ambitious productions he's ever lent his name to, and a watershed moment for the acclaimed DJ and post pitchfork dance music everywhere |

In all honesty, this is probably Sonny at his absolute worst and the reason isn't simply because of how horribly banal the music is. I've talked before about how the day will eventually come when Skrillex will undoubtedly shoot himself in the foot by experimenting and, in the process, completely alienate his entire core fanbase. And with brostep already on a downwards momentum, it's not surprising to see Moore trying to branch out, what is surprising is the route he's taken, and just who he's attempting to ripoff this time around.
Points for trying (well actually no, not really at all), but you've really gotta laugh at how desperate Moore has really become if this is what he intends to do with his time now. The minimal percussion, the sea of bass rising up underneath, the downtuned and pitch-shifted vocals - oh, and of course the "lonely street at midnight" artwork.... I guess the grammy awards and pop star hookups weren't enough, Skrillex must want some real fans now. And from the looks of things, he's willing to do anything to get them |

Aesop Rock Skelethon | 4.0 |
Still too early to tell if this might actually be Aesop's most successful outing yet, but at the very least it's certainly his most consistent release. From purely a musical perspective, the beats have never sounded as urgent and bombastic as they are here, and while Aesop is still infatuated with multisyllabic rhyme schemes it's less of a issue here; instead of saturating the beat with an assortment of absurd pop-culture references and questionable non-sequiturs, Aesop ends up working perfectly in tandem with his background, feeding off the energy rather than simply supplementing it.
In a year that's already seen El-P dominate hip hop, Skelethon shows that the other indie hip hop star has still got plenty to say, and this new album is truly something to get excited about. |

Linkin Park Living Things | 2.0 |
A Thousand Suns was a terrible album, we all know that. But at least it was LP trying to experiment and have a little fun in the wake of nu-metal's death and the less than warm reception they received when they tried to, y'know "grow up". But while ATS failed because of its experimental nature, at least they were trying to shake things up a bit. This is not a band trying at all; Living Things might not be the group's worst outing but it sure as shit is their most boring outing to date. I mean, it really is fucking boring.
The anthemic choruses that seemed to have been designed as nothing more than to give those in attendance something to do are the words of any oppressed kid scratching his heartbreak on a school desk, held in place by a group of individuals well into their thirties. The electro-pop shlock instrumentation just feels tired and washed-out, and there's just this feeling of laziness surrounding the whole affair; the tired drudgery of a group realizing that it's time for another album. It isn't a return to form (seriously, what are you guys deaf?), but it also isn't even an attempt at it. It's LP, now on the other side of the Great Success Story spiralling ever downwards without the good graces to bow out sensibly. And come on now; you're one of the most commercially-successful "rock" outfits ever to have had the chance to shout on the radio, who are you kidding with this "victimized, victimized, never again victimized" bullshit?

John Talabot Fin | 4.5 |
Comfortable as the kind of bedroom pop album that almost demands the jumping on of beds, yet equally at home as a declaration against the dying of the day, Talabot's debut is an album set to become one of those timeless electronic albums. Timeless because it has no distinct place, instead alive through the influence of others, therefore comfortable anywhere and everywhere; and instead of being a compilation of loosely affiliated beats fIN instead is a cry of sublime cohesiveness, each track designed to work in perfect unison, to compliment each other. It?s a truly instinctive album, and as it stands now, one of a kind. |

Lana Del Rey Born to Die | 2.5 |
After listening to Born To Die I'm convinced of the fact that Lana Del Ray has had the misfortune of being born in the wrong era. This button-down, middle of America repression that she spends far too much time indulging in would have made far more sense served up in the chic glamor of the '50s, a time that Lana oh-so-obviously longs for with her penchant for wallowing in the footsteps of the ghosts that stalk the Hollywood hills.
It's this obsession that ultimately derails her debut LP, where the kitsch and the quirk stumble far beyond being simply cute and instead aches with the wide-eyed pillow talk of a woman who never really bothered to grow up. And if that's the point, then I just don't see the pay off. |

Battles Gloss Drop | 3.0 |
You won't find anything on here to rival the catchiness of 'Atlas' or the kind of concrete jungle vibe of 'Leyendecker'. And there's certainly nothing on here to topple the greatest moment in music ever; you know, THAT part in 'Tonto'. What you will find however are three band members, all masters in their respective fields, shedding some of the accessibility of their debut album and combining it with the slow progression of their early EPs. A little less technical, (which results in the album having a little more warmth to it) and a little more methodical, Gloss Drop is a worthy follow up. It's just not as energetic as I want it to be. It's a lot more cohesive than Mirrored though, but that's really only because it lacks any true defining moment, nothing really sticks its neck out to be noticed. Which sadly, does hold the album back |

Beastie Boys Hot Sauce Committee Part Two | 3.5 |
Hot Sauce Committee Part 2 starts off like any post Paul's Boutique Beastie Boys album. 4 tracks in and you start to get that feeling, that little tingle that reverberates all through you that yip, you might just be listening to the best hip hop album of the year. And just like every Beastie Boys album that doesn't involve The Dust Brothers or Rick Rubin (that's DJ Double R for you older ones), you hit the middle portion and watch as your expectations crumble away. Once again, the hip hop veterans have somehow fucked everything up as, just like always, everything goes southwards come the dying moments of the album. It's happened before as I've already stated and to be honest we should all be used to this by now. But the first half of the Hot Sauce is just so fuckin' sexy that it makes the downfall so much worse and infinitely more noticeable. It seems that the boys (middle aged men now) just don't have it in them to sustain themselves for a whole album anymore.
But to reiterate the important stuff: Hot Sauce Committee Part 2 is a HUGE step up from To The 5 Boroughs and probably about on par with Hello Nasty. But sure, compare this to The Mix Up, because that's fuckin' smart |
