nazism.

So we’re just supposed to accept that album cover?
Thrice Horizons/East3.0
It?s like the last decade of Thrice never happened, and that?s a very good thing.

Maybe it?s because Mono have been so dull for so long, but this kinda slaps.
Replicant Malignant Reality3.5
There are moments where I swear Luc Lemay is in this band.
Aborted ManiaCult3.5

Welcome to the worst sound off page of 2021.
Deafheaven Infinite Granite4.0
Y’all took Deafheaven’s metal side for granite, now you get this.
Wolves in the Throne Room Primordial Arcana4.0
Feels so good to jam an occult-sounding black metal album with comfort in knowing it isnt fashy
Diskord Degenerations3.5
The Killers Pressure Machine3.5

King Woman Celestial Blues4.0
P sweet.
Edit: okay, V sweet
Erdve Savigaila3.5
Samia Scout3.5
Ophidian I Desolate3.5
At a brisk 38 minutes, Desolate really checked my tech-jaded sensibilities with a really joyful and fun slab of goofy shit.
At the Gates The Nightmare of Being3.0
3.0 instead of 3.5 because they threw a saxophone in there.
Adjy The Idyll Opus (I-VI)3.0
I do not care for this very much but I love seeing people excited about things
Doja Cat Planet Her3.5
Not loving how several of these songs will be on my ?most played? list in Spotify at the end of the year
Dale Kerrigan noise bitch3.5
Japanese Breakfast Jubilee4.5
This is sublime
Blood Cultures LUNO3.5
Portal Avow4.0
Idk man this is some wonky, doofusy death metal but in the right mindset it feels indescribably revelatory
The Devil Wears Prada ZII2.0
Honestly one of the best Christian metalcore releases I?ve heard in well over a decade
Nadja Luminous Rot2.5
Nadja, for a time, played soundtracks for a lot of lonely nights, but they haven?t hit the same way in years
Panopticon ...And Again into the Light4.0
This is a Panopticon album alright
Sigil (CAN) Nether3.5
Fucked Up Year of the Horse3.5
Easily the most impactful Fucked Up release in a decade
Manchester Orchestra The Million Masks of God2.0
Holy shit this is boring.
Atvm Famine, Putrid and Fucking Endless3.5
Spectral Lore Ετερόφωτος3.5
This would have been a slam dunk were it not for the 20 minutes of nothing at the end (3.7)
The Armed Ultrapop4.0
“Untitled had some incredible moments. At this point, I could see the band revealing that rtheir past two albums
were just a joke mocking the way people can fall for any rexperimental bullshit they concoct as long as they just
have the agency to follow through rwith it. Its unlikely, but thats my hope, because it sounds like confused horse
noises. rpast two albums”
Zao The Crimson Corridor3.5
Had zero intention of listening to this but some of those singles bop hard
Godspeed You! Black Emperor G_d's Pee AT STATE'S END!4.0
Wtf is “widescreen post rock”?
serpentwithfeet Deacon4.0
Lana Del Rey Chemtrails Over The Country Club3.5

Mare Cognitum Solar Paroxysm3.5
Cool stuff as always.
Midnight Odyssey Biolume Part 2 - The Golden Orb3.5
Similar in a lot of ways to the rest of his discog (long ass bm songs) but there?s a definite move towards expanding his traditional proggy bm sound
Dvne Etemen Ænka4.0
I really get off shitting on prog metal albums y?all love but this is actually great
Krallice Demonic Wealth4.0
I really overrated that last album hard, but this slower, quirkier dungeon synth take on Krallice has me living.
Ad Nauseam Imperative Imperceptible Impulse4.0

Black Country, New Road For the first time3.5

2020

The songs that don?t sound like an anime montage are pretty great.
Ichiko Aoba Adan no Kaze4.0
Nevoa Towards Belief3.5
Liturgy Origin of the Alimonies4.0

Edit: idgaf how stuffy and silly this is I love it so much
Ariana Grande positions2.5
I hate how boring I find this because the title track is so damn goooooood

“Waiting for Xenophanes to compare this to a wanked-in shirt?”

Wait, did I say this?
Svalbard When I Die, Will I Get Better?3.5
Anna von Hausswolff All Thoughts Fly4.0
Sundr Solar Ships2.5
There is a time in my life where I probably would have really dug this. That time has since passed.
Napalm Death Throes of Joy in the Jaws of Defeatism3.5
Vital Spirit In The Faith That Looks Through Death2.5
Samia The Baby3.5
0 (Null) Entity4.0
Icelandic BM is bland and samey but this doom heavy take with dashes of emo sorta reminds me of the Pax Cecilia in some very minor ways
Cytotoxin Nuklearth3.0
This looks really stupid for being the highest trending album here. I will judge how much I trust this site going
forward based on my listen.

Edit: Okay
Silver Knife Unyielding/Unseeing3.5
Krallice Mass Cathexis3.5
I overrated this one hard, sorry guys.
Imha Tarikat Sternenberster3.5
Imperial Triumphant Alphaville4.0
Im still listening to folklore tbh.
Defeated Sanity The Sanguinary Impetus3.5
Bedsore Hypnagogic Hallucinations4.0
Unique and pretty. Reminds me of Morbus Chron I think.
Taylor Swift Folklore4.0
“Mouth fuck”.
Boris NO4.0

Firelink Firelink3.5
Ulthar Providence3.5
Valdrin Effigy Of Nightmares3.5
Haunter (USA-TX) Thrinodía (Remixed & Remastered 2020)4.0
Love this band so much and their first album is made all the better with this release
Dynfari Myrkurs Er Þörf3.0
Cirith Ungol Forever Black3.4
Everything about this: the production, song structure, lyrical content, album cover, etc. is so old school in the most feel-good way.
Ulcerate Stare Into Death and Be Still3.9
The first Ulcerate album I don?t need to say “I enjoy it, but...”
The Black Dahlia Murder Verminous2.5
Like, who tf cares anymore?
Feminazgul No Dawn for Men4.0
Grimes Miss Anthropocene4.4
Toby Driver and Nick Hudson Black Feather Under Your Tongue0.5
There was a time when I used to pretend to sorta get into this kind of thing but ugh. Awful.
Mitochondrial Sun Mitochondrial Sun3.5
This is some stuffy, cheeseball instra-metal-tronica that I am absolutely here for
Panopticon/Aerial Ruin Panopticon / Aerial Ruin1.5
Holy shit ?North Dakota? is awful.
Pyre (USA-FL) Come Home3.5
This is really wholesome and fun : ).
2019
Blood Incantation Hidden History of the Human Race5.0
This is the best death metal album of the decade—full stop.
Liturgy H.A.Q.Q.3.8
FWIW I am still laughing about transcendental black metal.
FKA Twigs Magdalene4.0
File under ?albums I would predict Ali give a 4.5?.
Swans Leaving Meaning2.5
In 2017 we were left with the tantalizing prospect of ?Swans 3.0.? Leaving Meaning, though, feels very ?2010s Swans? albeit with less teeth. Songs like ?What is this?? are some of the most beautiful in their discography, but the more plodding and languid stretches of post-post-punk freak-folk hypnosis had me reaching for the skip button.
Jonsi and Alex Lost and Found2.3
Blut Aus Nord Hallucinogen3.5
MV3 is my favorite black metal album of all time (I know, right?) so hearing a bit of a return of it is, er, music to my
ears. Too bad the album art and name are so on the nose.
Insomnium Heart Like a Grave3.0
?Pale Morning Star? is sick.
Boris Love and Evol4.3
Cult of Luna A Dawn to Fear3.0
Fine and unremarkable.
The Number Twelve Looks Like You Wild Gods3.6
Weeping Sores False Confession4.0
Kayo Dot Blasphemy2.5
With each release, Kayo Dot inch away from being a great band with a few bad albums to a bad band with a few great albums.
Lana Del Rey Norman Fucking Rockwell!4.5
Am I the only one who thinks that it’s weird this is the first album of hers to have a song called “California”?
Taylor Swift Lover2.4
I have been happily listening to every Taylor Swift album since ?Red? and this is far and away the worse that I have yet to hear.
Pijn and Conjurer Curse These Metal Hands3.8
?High Spirits? reaffirms my belief in metal.
Anoice Ghost in the Clocks3.5
Wear Your Wounds Rust on the Gates of Heaven3.2
This is fine.
Yellow Eyes Rare Field Ceiling3.8
Boris tears e.p3.5
State Faults Clairvoyant3.8
Me: “I haven’t listened to skramz since 2013 and Sputnik and its taste is terrible now so let’s shit on this.”
rAlso me: “Well I’ll be...”
Miley Cyrus She Is Coming3.8
My best friend Leslie says “Oh she’s just bein’ 2013 Miley”
Kishi Bashi Omoiyari4.0
Could listen to Penny Rabbit and Summer Bear for forever
Deathspell Omega The Furnaces of Palingenesia4.0
Full of Hell Weeping Choir4.0
Lizzo Cuz I Love You2.3
“Body positivity” is something ugly people invented so they would have something to talk about on the Internet
other than “This Is Us”
Dead To A Dying World Elegy4.0
Predictably lovely.
Hath Of Rot And Ruin2.9
This kind of sounds like Ulcerate covering The Black Dahlia Murder
Inter Arma Sulphur English3.5
Periphery Periphery IV: Hail Stan0.5
I listened to this for about 10 minutes and it was sort of boring but not offensively so.
Waste of Space Orchestra Syntheosis3.9
Moon Tooth Crux3.5
Laura Stevenson The Big Freeze4.1
“Baby Bones” but 30 minutes long.
La Dispute Panorama3.9
“Can I still get into heaven if I like an album by a band that I absolutely hate?”
American Football American Football (LP3)4.0
This could never have lived up to my hype but it is still wonderful in its own right.
Contrarian Their Worm Never Dies2.0
This isn?t really good. If you like ?crazy? metal for the sake of craziness then it may have merit, but subjectively it?s mushy, samey noodling (with an objectively stupid title)
Venom Prison Samsara3.5
Heavy for the sake of heaviness but sometimes that?s perfectly good enough
Pissgrave Posthumous Humiliation2.3
This is...better?
Vous Autres Champ du Sang3.5
The Chemical Mind Beneath the Shadow It Casts4.0
Vanum Ageless Fire3.8
Ariana Grande Thank U, Next4.0
Beirut Gallipoli2.0
Krallice Wolf3.5

2018
Laura Stevenson The Mystic & the Master4.5
The 1975 A Brief Inquiry into Online Relationships3.0
Obliteration Cenotaph Obscure3.3
Corpsessed Impetus of Death3.4
Chapel of Disease ...And as We Have Seen the Storm4.0
DM AOTY IMO.
Sigh Heir to Despair3.9
La Dispute Somewhere at the Bottom... (10th Anniversary)2.0
God I?m getting old
Cult Leader A Patient Man3.6
URSA Abyss Between the Stars3.5
Colin Self Siblings4.0
Bloodbath The Arrow of Satan Is Drawn3.4
Robyn Honey3.7
Daughters You Won't Get What You Want5.0
Dammit I haven?t listened yet but I so badly want to have the top soundoff for this!
mewithoutYou [Untitled]3.0
Coheed and Cambria Vaxis I: The Unheavenly Creatures3.5
?Halo?? Mass Effect????? casual much????????????????????????rHe?s quoted as saying that Halo has directly influenced him which is actually v disappointing
Dodsrit Spirit Crusher3.5
SUMAC Love In Shadow3.6
While a lot of content could have been trimmed (that last 10 minutes of The Task for example), Sumac have done
a 180 and made an unexpectedly nuanced record. Compared to the oppressive density of “What One Becomes”
or the never-ending-noise that was their collab with Keiji Haino, “Love in Shadow” comes off as a light, and
almost melodious affair.
Toby Driver They Are the Shield4.0
I love nothing more than shitting on Tony Driver. For years we have had to deal with the stuffy and ostentatious ruination of Kayo Dot, as well as the adandonment motW and it really gets me going to point all of this out. HOWEVER, this album is just lovely. It?s beautiful and evocative while being surprisingly understated (in a way we are not accustomed from Driver). Best yet, it takes everything he?s done right in the last several years while getting rid of everything he has not.
Holy Fawn Death Spells3.9
Yves Tumor Safe in the Hands of Love3.5
Thou Magus4.0
I wish Gameofmetal would post his review already so I can talk about this
Manes Slow Motion Death Sequence3.5
Ariana Grande Sweetener2.5
Rebel Wizard Voluptuous Worship of Rapture and Response4.2
Thou Rhea Sylvia4.0
Skeletonwitch Devouring Radiant Light3.9
Between the Buried and Me Automata II2.4
Deafheaven Ordinary Corrupt Human Love3.5
Imperial Triumphant Vile Luxury3.8
A l e x Growing Up: Volume II3.5
Split Cranium I'm The Devil and I'm OK3.2
It?s Friday before a three-day weekend and this is feeling pretty good. Valid and lacking substance, but a good time nonetheless
The Body I have fought against it, But I can’t any longer3.5
At the Gates To Drink from the Night Itself2.7
like a snake eating its tail, At the Gates’ influence on metalcore has come full circle with “To Drink from the Night
Itself” being the best album August Burns Red have ever made.

Edit: @Willie: I wish ;_;
Thou The House Primordial3.0
Grouper Grid of Points2.5
"I'd rather be sleeping"
Voices Frightened3.3
This sort of sounds like a middle-late era Kayo Dot album.
A Perfect Circle Eat the Elephant2.9
Me: You can’t make a worse cover than “The Thirteenth Step”

A Perfect Circle: Hold my beer.
Sleep The Sciences3.8
Checking my cynicism at the door because this is good.
Skeletal Remains Devouring Mortality2.7
Admittedly this is pretty fun but idk if I have it in me anymore to listen to ANOTHER album with a name like
“Devouring Mortality” from a band with a name like Skeletal Remains
Cardi B Invasion of Privacy2.0
So this is what Pitchfork?s Best New Music sounds like in 2018.
Underoath Erase Me2.4
I know I?ve made this joke already but this is the best Linkin Park album in some time
Hop Along Bark Your Head Off, Dog3.5
Panopticon The Scars of Man on the Once Nameless Wilderness4.0
Black metal does not deserve Austin Lunn.
Mournful Congregation The Incubus of Karma3.5
Rivers of Nihil Where Owls Know My Name2.5
Didn’t see what all the hype was about until the cleans came in at “A Home” then I remembered how basic you all
are and it made sense.
Between the Buried and Me Automata I2.9
The closest I have come to caring about a BTBAM album since that EP seven years ago (brevity suits this exhausting band). However, I do miss the days when the were a smart metalcore band rather than a dumb progressive one.
Pestilence Hadeon3.0
Over-simplified songwriting belies a profound understanding of how death metal can be both fun and catchy while still convincingly heavy.
Slugdge Esoteric Malacology3.5
Harakiri for the Sky Arson2.0
2018?s first bad album comes in the form of a black metal record with sadistically long songs that sound like a never ending stream of August Burns Red hooks and choruses.
MGMT Little Dark Age2.5
Justin Timberlake Man of the Woods2.0
Lucy Dacus Historian4.0
Portal ION2.5
Tribulation Down Below3.5
Hooded Menace Ossuarium Silhouettes Unhallowed4.0
Best death/doom band in existence releases their best album nbd
Yhdarl Loss3.0
Hamferd Támsins likam2.5
Watain Trident Wolf Eclipse2.5
Summoning With Doom We Come3.3
Best album of 2018 so far.

2017
Cleric Retrocausal3.5
Prurient Rainbow Mirror3.5
Well that was exhausting
Bjork Utopia2.0
Krallice Go Be Forgotten4.2
Krallice's messiest and most flawed release to date may also be their best.
In Flames Down, Wicked and No Good0.5
The hotter Anders gets the worse this band becomes. Not a good trade off imo.
Taylor Swift Reputation3.8
Converge The Dusk in Us3.5
I feel like I?ve spent four years underrating this.
Acid Witch Evil Sound Screamers3.3
Ne Obliviscaris Urn0.5
Ya?ll act like this is so groundbreaking when people have been using violins in music for over 400 years.
Krallice Loüm3.5
Krallice have never sounded heavier or darker; this is the closest the band has ever come to a traditional metal aesthetic.
Blut Aus Nord Deus Salutis Meae3.3
Darker and weirder; more in line with the Odinist than anything else. Sounds distantly related to Deathspell Omega I guess. Basically, Saturnian Poetry this isn't.
Bell Witch Mirror Reaper2.9
Yellow Eyes Immersion Trench Reverie4.0
St. Vincent Masseduction3.2
Enslaved E3.5
Actually really fun and I typically hate this sorta thing
Spectral Voice Eroded Corridors of Unbeing3.5
This is good but c?mon you guys.
Spirit Adrift Curse of Conception3.5
Really surprised by this.
Miley Cyrus Younger Now3.0
I wanted to love this more but it loses steam half way through. Once you get to "Thinkin'" the album goes from "pretty great" to "pretty dull." Oh well at least the singles are good.
The World Is a Beautiful Place... Always Foreign4.0
Infinite Steve is like my favorite song of the decade.
Archspire Relentless Mutation2.3
There's so much about this to like: the production, the vocals, the exciting variation, etc. But I'm exhausted two songs in, much like their last album. It's an exercise in how much the listener can handle and I guess just fail.
Monarch (FRA) Never Forever2.5
I want to like this more than I actually like this. I just don't think I have the patience for this sort of thing anymore.
Mastodon Cold Dark Place2.9
Better than the last two albums, but even with just four songs this feels a little boring and overlong.
Cradle of Filth Cryptoriana – The Seductiveness of Decay3.4
After making fun of this band for years without every actually listening to them I have to say I had fun. Kinda silly and dramatic but a lot more fun than it has any right to be. Reminds me of Sigh I suppose.
Circa Survive The Amulet3.4
Acephalix Decreation3.4
Godspeed You! Black Emperor Luciferian Towers3.5
I was all set to hate this but after several spins it's got some of the bands most subtle and memorable moments ever
The Contortionist Clairvoyant2.3
Gave this an honest shot but it's sorta lame. Like, not offensively bad but just really, really, really lame in a Steven Wilson sort of "I like prog and have owned a fedora before" kind of way.
The National Sleep Well Beast2.0
Stunning. Jaw to the floor. Absolutely in awe of how fucking boring this band is. If I had known that a beard and a
baritone could make so many guys this wet then I probably would have had a more interesting college
experience.
Cannabis Corpse Left Hand Pass3.7
Iron And Wine Beast Epic2.8
In a week that sees the release of Iron and Wine and Brand new, we're witnessing a showdown for the hearts and souls of boring 30 year old white guys everywhere.
Steven Wilson To the Bone2.0
God this is so lame.
Brand New Science Fiction3.4
As someone with no emotional/nostalgia attachment to this band I have to say that this is a really good rock album.
Incantation Profane Nexus3.5
Unpopular opinion: Incantation are at the height of their career. This combined with their last two records represents them at their best.
Cormorant Diaspora4.2
Cormorant have checked my pretentious cynicism with an album I love, full of things I typically hate. Predictably awesome and a definite contender for one of the best metal records of the year.
Arcade Fire Everything Now2.3
The Blight Meditations on Insignificance2.9
Manchester Orchestra A Black Mile to the Surface3.3
I'm not a big Manchester Orchestra fan but "The Gold" was/is a 5/5 song for me and "The Alien" was
pretty cool too so I was pumped for this. Well it's mostly a snooze-fest and I should have checked
my enthusiasm. "The Wolf," "Lead, SD," "The Mistake," and "The Silence" are all really forgettable
which is too bad because ~aesthetically~ this is the most interesting and distinctive the band has
ever sounded. "The Parts" could easily be a Right Away, Great Captain! song so that's great I
suppose.
Temple of Void Lords Of Death4.0
A hidden gem of 2017, just as their debut was for 2014.
Afterbirth The Time Traveler's Dilemma4.1
City of Caterpillar Driving Spain Up A Wall3.5
Coldplay Kaleidoscope2.2
Are we really doing this?
Boris Dear3.5
Claims of revolutionism aside, it is very nice to hear Boris drone again.
Jute Gyte Oviri3.1
It's like that moment at a buffet where you crossed the line and you're too full to finish what's on your plate. That's how I feel about Jute Gyte--after years of feasting on insane proclivity I think I am nearing my satiety. "Oviri" is different enough to be satisfying but not that satisfying.
Melvins A Walk With Love And Death2.5
I like to pretend I like weird noise experiments but Love makes me front the bill for my posturing.
Decapitated Anticult3.3
Better than it has any right to be given that the band has only released one good album (and that was like 15 years ago). Also the title, cover, and lyrical content are dumb. Still it's a good enough time.
Impetuous Ritual Blight Upon Martyred Sentience2.3
Ravishingly pumped for this, listened once, then forgot it existed until I saw a review posted if that tells you anything.
Fleet Foxes Crack-Up3.0
Katy Perry Witness2.0
Suffocation …Of the Dark Light2.3
"Remember how good Pierced From Within was? Remember? Do you??" said Eli, huddled in a corner, staring a the walls.
Elder (USA-MA) Reflections of a Floating World3.7
Typically the cynic when it comes to trendy metal like this but this is great.
Radiohead OKNOTOK 1997-20174.5
Rating this so highly because it's been almost 10 years since Radiohead released a good album so maybe I'm just hungry for them not to be bad anymore.
Blood Cultures Happy Birthday4.2
Your barber sounds cooler than you
Loss Horizonless3.5
Last album was such a hidden gem back in 2011. Although they missed the doom bubble of the past few years, "Horizonless" is still relevant, and a total a joy.
Do Make Say Think Stubborn Persistent Illusions3.8
Paramore After Laughter2.3
C'mon you guys
Ulsect Ulsect3.5
A Lot Like Birds DIVISI2.0
Why did I listen to this?
At the Drive-In in•ter a•li•a3.0
Natalia Lafourcade Musas3.5
Oxbow Thin Black Duke3.8
Full of Hell Trumpeting Ecstasy3.9
Slowdive Slowdive (LP)4.0
V good.
Shadow Of Intent Reclaimer3.0
Toby Driver Madonnawhore2.0
As if we needed another reason to stop listening to all Toby Driver affiliated projects
Artificial Brain Infrared Horizon4.0
While there are some moments that literally seem copy/pasted from their debut, there's enough twists ("Static rShattering" could be a Krallice song) to make it interesting enough to stand on its own. It's a darker and heavier ralbum but still a lot of fun.
Phrenelith Desolate Endscape3.4
Ulver The Assassination of Julius Caesar2.7
I felt like I was listening to a post-punk playlist at a gay bar.
Sielunvihollinen Ruhonkantaja3.4
Some of the deepest cutting, yet melodic, bm all year
Mastodon Emperor of Sand2.5
Mount Eerie A Crow Looked At Me2.0
Dodecahedron Kwintessens2.4
Loud and dark death metal with some black sensibilities. In the five years since their debut this Deathspell fellating style as proliferates the scene; an indulgent sound that's caused eye rolls amongst even the most devout fans. It's still a fine album but is it fine enough to standout amongst the bustling crowd, especially when others do it much better? Probably not.
Obituary Obituary3.0
The best Obituary album since the early 90s but to be honest that's a low bar to clear.
Endon Through The Mirror3.5
Svart Crown Abreaction3.0
100% agree with Willie.
Chinese Football Here comes a new challenger!3.5
Sunless Urraca3.0
Prolly would have been more impressive five years ago before this style became so overharvested. Still it's uncommonly good for a generic bandcamp release.
Immolation Atonement3.8
Jesca Hoop Memories Are Now3.0
"Pegasi" is a 10/10 song but the rest is all over the place.

How I learned to stop worrrying and love Krallice.
Murg Gudatall2.4
This really isn't that gud at all.
Sentient Horror Ungodly forms3.0
Retro Swedish death by way of American armatures in 2016. Well done and pretty endearing but I'm sure I won't remember it come next month
World's End Girlfriend Last Waltz3.0
Convulsing Errata3.5
Quite something
Dead Congregation Sombre Doom3.5
I wasn't huge of Dead Congregation's last album because I'm not that huge on Dead Congregation in general. The homogenous pummeling take on dm grows tiring pretty quickly. But their doom-y foray here is really nice. Wrapped into a great 13-minute package, the EP is just enough DC without it overstaying it's welcome. [3.3]
Anaal Nathrakh The Whole of the Law2.0
Annoying band.
Krypts Remnants of Expansion2.5
Car Bomb Meta3.0
Vermin Womb Decline3.0
Loud and fast music with a grimy production. Would be cool if you hadn't heard 1000 incarnations of this band already.
Ulcerate Shrines of Paralysis3.5
If you don't mind listening to "Everything Is Fire" v.1.4 then you're going to enjoy another slab of atmospheric death metal from the best in the game.

American Football American Football (LP2)4.0

Mono Requiem For Hell1.5
Sonata Arctica The Ninth Hour1.0
I'm constantly impressed by this band, which can produce such consistent 1/5 albums throughout their career
Meshuggah The Violent Sleep Of Reason2.0
It's hard defending Meshuggah half the time becuase so many of their attributes are almost objectively bad. For those who enjoy them, like me, it's easy to look past the inherent monotony of their music. There's a meditative property to their swirling madness that makes it worth it. "Koloss" traded this in for tighter songwriting whereas "Catch Thirty-three" wholly embraced it. "Obzen" blended both sides to near perfection.r"The Violent Sleep of Reason," however, is the worst parts of Meshuggah in album form. It's boring. It's homogeneous. It's uneventful. After a week of listening only "MonstroCity" stands out, and that's only because it has the dumbest song title I've ever heard.rDisappointing but not surprisingly so. Meshuggah has always been this lame but they have always made up for it with a smooth and cool sound. Here it's just not enough.
Alcest Kodama2.5
Opeth Sorceress3.0
Jenny Hval Blood Bitch3.5
Bon Iver 22, A Million3.5
Neurosis Fires Within Fires3.3
Classic, by the numbers Neurosis but not in the way that made "Honor Found in Decay" so lame.
Insomnium Winter's Gate3.7
Never cared too much for Insomnium (or melodeath in general) but this was a hell of a great listening experience. rI've always scoffed at the great heights of their albums and passed them off as typical Finnish melodrama. But rhere there is a lot of intelligent restraint and admirable maturity. It's a 40 minute nonstop track but there's an rimmense amount of content that spans a lot of styles. It's really theatrical and dramatic death metal that's often rtimes staggeringly beautiful.r3.7
Mare Cognitum Luminiferous Aether3.5
I've come to hate "atmospheric black metal" since it's all made of the same husk but with different padding. Mare Cognitum always impresses with a great understanding of what makes the subgenre work. He's always showing a surprising amount of restraint that--even when a song is stretching past the 12-minute mark--makes the piece feel like a logical whole made up of necessary parts. Luminiferous Aether is solid, modern atmospheric black metal from one hell of a savvy musician.
The Dear Hunter Act V: Hymns with the Devil in Confessional2.0
B sides of an average album makes for a terrible one
Norma Jean Polar Similar2.5

An Autumn For Crippled Children Eternal2.0
Band perpetually puts out 3's but the pretty cover art and font style make me want to check this despite knowing that I probably won't care

basal simplicity belies a startlingly atmospheric and compulsively listenable metal album

Howls of Ebb Cursus Impasse: The Pendlomic Vows4.2
If you have enjoyed this band in the past (which you should, as they're one of the most fascinating death metal acts currently making music) then you'll find a lot to love here. Their second record takes the infernal psychedlia of "The Marrow Veil" and packages it in a manner more like their debut, with palatable songs and more standard structure. It's a tightened and condensed version of last years EP, albeit without the boundary pushing presentation. Still, it's an excellent slab of death metal that everyone, especially fans, should check out.
Deftones Gore1.5

Without the shocking name and cover art this album is an embarrassingly transparent and juvenile attempt at "raw" and "brutal" death metal. I'm sure some people will eat up the blatant perversion that the band employs but they're really just a bunch of guys trying too hard.

I usually avoid anything tagged "atmospheric black metal" because it's the same regurgitated shit over and over again. This isn't really any different, but it hits a real sweet spot sounding decidedly modern yet steeped in retro synths and production. Worth checking out.

If I had to pick one band that is doing the least in progressing the genre, it would be a close race between rExplosions in the Sky and Mono. But what Mono lacks in originality (this is the exact same album they've rreleased over and over again) they make up for with their dramatic and emotive delivery. Bland, uninspired, rand derivative, "For My Parents" isn't going to change anyone's opinions on this band, but am I a sucker for rdem climaxes.

Sure they've made some questionable choices in the past, but The Mars Volta are always able to make something fresh and interesting. While many will argue how this ranks among their discography, in the end it won't matter because as always, it's unlike any other album in their fucking discography.

It's more melodic and easily more poetic, but it lacks the overall energy that was so palpable on their 2009 effort. Parting the Sea Between Brightness and Me is a great record that plays up the band's strengths, but after awhile it all begins to feel a bit 'samey,' and regretfully uninspired.

Oh baby I tried, hell, I even lied to myself by giving this a higher rating. Regardless, this is not the band I fell in love with on Kezia, nor is it the mature, refined group of young men I admired on Fortress. They stripped away everything that made them such an intelligent and fun band, and instead created a vapid, uninteresting album full of terrible, terrible lyrics, and copy/pasted pieces from their other works. Scurrilous is boring, poorly thought out, and carelessly written; the definition of a disappointment.
