It rocks and progs hard, it's engaging, it's high, low, it's very melodious, hypnotic and good till the last drop. It's also quite heavy in places, dreamy in others, repetitive, but only to double-satisfy a listener.

Band makes me think of Kyuss meets Queens of The Stone Age, with a singer who has the power and the assurance of Jeff Buckley. Intense, bluesy hard rock (with soft parts) which has a taste of stoner rock with no raw, dirty sound. Instead, it's transparent, limpid crystal clear hard rock if it makes sense. No need to dig blues, but if you don't, you will up to now. Guitar is heavy but not abrasive. Arrangements are carefully done, and no fillers at all on here. Production is top notch. If you're still unwilling to listen to this, try only ''Alquezar''. I absolutely love every track. My favorites are ''Ritual'', ''Beast'' and ''Alquezar''. My least favorite is ''Crows'', but it's still great. Classic!

One thing we can instantly detect with Mad Fellaz is their ease to build up groovy instrumental music. I feel the intrusion of a singer on here doesn't work all the time, compared to Mad Fellaz II, where they took the time to beautifully fit vocals a la Annie Haslam meets Gayle Moran's in few calculated places. Here though, male vocals a la Casey McPherson (Flying Colors) are a bit forced, as if there were not much room left for them, and they kinda rushed them and keep on trying hard to put puzzle pieces into a wrong spot. In fact, it's a pretty good singer, but he seems to be uncomfortable with his fellas. Mad Fellaz proved they excell as a total instrumental band as seen on their first release. The second album is well balanced when it comes to the female vocals versus the instrument arrangements, but it shows it could have been easily another instrumental one. Here, on their third effort, no more beautiful female vocals, instead an ''introverted'' male singer with no risky lines and tones and not much creativity either, and it contrasts with music that is magic and top notch all around. Album has its strenghts, especially the opener and the last two tracks. Don't miss the last song, omg. Best vocally (the singer shines in the last two) and instrumentally. Mad Fellaz is an eclectic prog band with amazing jazzy arrangements without never directly touching jazz, so they are more into the rock equation of prog. Very talented musicians. My guess is that they will continue without any singer. Start with Mad Fellaz II.

Nothing new under the sun, and numerous ballads are haunting the place again. It's almost like if it was an Olivia Sparnenn's solo album (pretty much Pat Benatar kinda vocals). I'm tired of her trying to sound like Heather Findlay. I miss that founder female singer who's vocals were powerful and emotive and she covered the good old days of the band. Not much of Celtic, traditional folk and prog folk to be found since she left. The only typical Mostly Autumn songs on here are the short opener and ''Viking Funerals, the one that follows (at 4:59, acoustic guitar is identical to those found on Supertramp' ''Even In The Quietest Moments''), and finally the epic one before the last, ''White Rainbow''. Then the album is on a free falling with all these ballads that are packing the center of the album. There are good but not great generic songs all around, but they tried to revive our interest with the epic ''White Rainbow''. Twenty min long, it could have been divided into two songs, but it contains typical band's elements. It also gives a nod and a wink (6:43) to ''Fading Colors'' from Heart Full Of Sky. So, a very few songs sound like the Mostly Autumn I knew and loved.

See my Edit at the end of my sound off. After hearing their famous proggy, concept album Discesa, my expectations were high for their new album Seme. What a disappointment!...My first deception is the unbalanced delivery. Album starts with a powerful, heavy prog BANG, one that we would not find elsewhere on here. Album falls flat in every two songs. They clearly lack of direction, like if they were trying to gain more popularity, but instead they took the risk to lose a big part of their actual fanbase. Musicians are skillful and the singer has an energetic and emotive voice. Too bad, album could have been more proggy and much better. My guess is that they released it too soon with not enough material. it's not mature, and not deep enough. Better taking time a bit more rather than rushing a release. There are few songs I like very much, and interesting instrumental breaks have to be found, but not enough to save the whole thing. Will give a few more spins to see if my rating is too poor. Edit; the best moments overshadow the weakest, so it's a 3.5 from me.

We're in presence of a good jazz prog band. They have lots of creativity. Good ideas are plenty. My only gripe is the drummer playing. The guy is very talented, but he doesn't know how to play. Or what to play. He just keeps on repeating what the other musicians are doing, instead of doing conventional 4/4 rock beats or hi-hat centered beats from time to time, for a contrast and to breathe a little bit. Music is already complex. They need the drums to be less tight, softer and more down to earth. Album would be a classic if it was the case.

Unreal City is a relatively new symphonic prog band coming from Italy. Very centered around a keyboardist who masterfully uses piano, organ, moog, mellotron - etc - Band revives some of the Italian prog majesty of the 70's. They incorporate all the classic RPI traditions of clever melodies, artful presentation, impeccable delivery and dramatic touches. They are backed by Fabio Zuffanti, who is compared to an Italian version of Steven Wilson, so the group can have immense future appeal. This flows better than their first one.There are more dynamics between the instruments, songwriting is thoroughly done, it's more polished, tighter and no filler to be found.

Fabio Zuffanti is one of the most prolific musicians of our time. Bassman and songwriter, he's the man behind the success of bands such as Finisterre, La Maschera Di Cera, Hostsonaten and many more. ''La Quarta Vittima'' is without a doubt his most appealing album from his solo career's catalogue. This is modern prog, and it's especially for those who love vintage 70's symphonic prog with mellotrons and sax throwing in. Relatively dark with couple of enthusiastic, up tempo passages, it's rather accessible, but definitely a delight for any kind of prog lovers.

Progressive Rock is not dead. Neal Morse have done it again. Release after release he shows how great composer he is. I can't get enough of his prog material. The prolific songwriter was Spock's Beard's former and mastermind. He's always managed to be surrounded by very talented musicians, and I'm pretty sure his best compositions still have to come.With Mike Portnoy on drums, it adds greatly to the elevation, powerful and well crafted modern prog rock which Neal has always used. Okay. Let me fix a good point; It's not that '12 Stories Down' doesn't exist, but it's much forgettable since it's only preview version of '10 Stories Down'. It's mostly the same track list, but it contains only unmastered mixes plus a so so bonus disc called '8 Days Later'. Avoid that shit and let's focus on the one you actually have to look for; '10 Stories Down'. You cannot miss it; Its last two tracks are the highlights. They are pure bliss and they fit so well together. And I appointed: 'Light Up Your Eyes'('I Will' and 'Who Will'). The way the first part (I Will) builds to an emotional high is incredible. The second part (Who Will) has a real Porcupine Tree feel to it. 'Wretched Soul' is a good rocker and it has to be my third favorite one. 'It's Just You And Me' is a nice emotional laid back track with a catchy chorus a la Elliott Smith. Not to forget 'Clapham'. Probably the most accessible on the cd. Very catchy, radio friendly and a highlight. The post-rock like 'Prey For Me' is not bad at all. 'The Answers' and 'The World I Always Dreamed Of' get better with every listens. Again, both had to be very Porcupine Tree like but take note that Bruce Soord didn't know anything at all about the PT works up to their last release 'Thigthly Unwound' if I remember well. Steven Wilson himself has contacted Bruce Soord with the intention to protect his own rights and while they talked about their so-called similar musical approach, Wilson has soon realized that Soord did never flirt by any means with Porcupine Tree. Period. Btw If you're just getting into The Thiefs, better start somewhere else. Whilst it's a nice album,'10 Stories Down' is probably the hardest one to get into. Try 'Variations On A Dream' and/or 'Little Man' before this.

Yeah, that rocks. I'm a huge fan of the multi-instrumentalist progger Neal Morse. Ex Spock's Beard's leader. He did an amazing job with them, and when he left for a solo career to proceed in the name of God, I thought game was over. But guess what, I do prefer his solo works. If you can't stand the God oriented lyrics but you like Spock's Beard or Transatlantic, get over it: the high level of musicianship and creativity makes it very attractive to any prog lover. And don't forget his other master works: Both his first solo release 'Testimony', 'Sola Scriptura', and '?'. Neal, God bless you, and keep proggin!! You make solid and majestic prog rock, and so you keep it alive in a fantastic way. I just pray for another full lenght prog album. I cannot wait. With Mike Portnoy, will you.

Both merged songs 'Big Eyed Fish' and 'Bartender' fit together so well.'Don't Drink The Water' is so powerful in this double live cd, same for 'When The World Ends', 'JTR' and a sensitive extended version of'Angel'..among others. Maybe it's just me but I have noticed a slight weakness:The playing of maestro Carter Beauford. He played a little too safely. He did no mistakes at all, but he was slightly lazy on drums for my taste. That was a personal deception, but I did get over it pretty fast.'Cause hey, this is a DMB show! Setlist could have been better, but you can't always get what you want. Carter Beauford is still in my top 10 modern drummers, don't get me wrong. Overall it's an excellent live performance, sound is top notch and musicians are top shape, as usual. R.I.P. LeRoy Moore.

This is the last studio album from Camel, since the leader Andrew Latimer has had health problems, and so he suffered from fatigue since then. I read in Wikipedia that a new full lenght album is intended. And it's apparently confirmed!...My hopes are already set high for it. According to a rumour their original drummer maestro Andy Ward would come back. Latimer has always expected his possible return since 'Nude' album(1981). 'A Nod And A Wink' was dedicated to Peter Barden (keyboard) who died in january 2002. Hope you get better Andrew. I know you won't give up. You are such a prolific composer. 'Harbour Of Tears' is a captivating concept album. So if you intend to randomly pick up its tracks, it just wouldn't work. Instead one must really listen from A to Z. Total time: 62 min. Unfortunately the end arrives too fast. Yes it's that good. The record ends with almost 15 minutes of near-silent waves of the sea. And it's the only flaw if there is. It's only that I'd rather like 5 minutes of nearby sound of waves crashing, and get one or two other songs instead. Overall, it's another incredible work from Camel.

Any Tull fan who doesn't give this at least one spin is doing himself an injustice. Roots to Branches is easily the best Jethro Tull album since Heavy Horses in 1978, almost 20 years earlier. It is truly a return to the Tull innovation of the 70s. When I look to this lack of love and all these low ratings, I really doubt people gave this at least a complete spin. I wonder why this album got nowhere near the attention it deserves on sputnik. What do you guys think? Jethro Tull was not washed up or out of ideas in the nineties, oh wait. Roots to Branches is there to prove it. Do yourself a favor and listen to this. And please stop giving random ratings.

I love it! Stunning live album. Its 'Oman' version is arguably their best performance ever. The setlist is more than satisfying, as is the production. This album is much more accessible than the first one. It still sounds a bit punk/alternative. Keep on mind that Brendan Perry's roots are around punk music, as you can detect in their songs. The band had developped their sound and identity with this album. Here is where they introduced their 'medieval' style, and it's a good thing. Highlights for me are 'Mesmerism', 'Advent ' and ' Avatar'. However, the best way to start with DCD is 'Aion'. It's by far their best effort and it's easy to get into. Followed by 'Into The Labyrinth' and of course, the stunning live one 'Toward The Within'. Gorgeous music. Enjoy.

This was not even supposed to be a Jethro Tull album, but the first Anderson's solo album. 'Black Sunday' is an outstanding classic Tull song. 'Flyingdale Flying' and 'Protect and Survive' are some of the ''A'' highlights. Eddie Jobson (UK, Roxy Music, Curved Air) appears as a guest, playing violins and keys in most of the tracks. Drummer Mark Craney (Jean-Luc Ponty) had replaced Barriemore who left the band shortly after bassist and friend John Glascock died. He soon realised he was unable to get over it. 'A' may contain some filler songs, but it's a good effort nonetheless, considering the advent of the ruthless Dark Age of prog, and the big shift in the staff as well. Both 'Two Weeks in Spain', 'As Old As You're Young' and 'For nobody' are in the vein of some Gentle Giant classic songs...but sprinkled with an evident pop orientation. The band is barely recognizable when compared to their genuine progressive rock catalogue. The way they try to merge mainstream rock and roll with their classic sound is not convincing enough. 'Mountain Time' is a good example of that. By flirting with a more simple sound, their actual so-called rocker songs sound pretty much like awkward pre-production stuff coming from an inexperienced band in search of their own sound. No surprising, the GG fanbase started to decrease right here. In an attempt to attract a wider audience to please the music industry more than anything, Gentle Giant had no choice to streamline their sound, and they pretty much failed in trying to do so; In effect, commercial success was never their primary goal. When they tried to change their style and go a bit more straightforward rock, it seemed to work a little While the band's skill as performers remained undiminished, their creative peak was now behind them. The Missing Piece was actually the start of the erosion. Does it still worth a listen? Yes, but don't expect to hear some typical heartfelt, adventurous, classic Gentle Giant. At this point, they have taken a big turn compared to their classic era right behind there. It's hard to believe only one year separates their very last classic album Interview from The Missing Piece. At this point, the juice just weren't flowing too well and Gentle Giant weren't really sure what direction to take. Album The Missing Piece and especially both its two followers Giant For A Day and Civilian did lost some of their experimental edge and when they tried to change their style and go a bit more straightforward rock, it seemed to work a little and too often it has caused a big fail. Overall, their three last efforts were good but urecognizable material regarding GG standards. The very last two releases are actually better if we don't think about Gentle Giant while listening. Their strenght was to play progressive rock; The music industry had the very last word on Gentle Giant and the prog rock world in general, as the Dark Age became totally ruthless toward the genre.

Maneige est avec Harmonium l'un des groupes les plus importants du Quebec sur la scene progressive. Leur musique est probablement le meilleur exemple de ce que devrait etre la musique fusion en melangeant des elements de classique et de folk, ainsi qu'avec des tonalites jazz, qui dans l'ensemble a toutes les intentions d'un rock progressif creatif, et epouse par moment de la musique de chambre. Non seulement ils sont nantis d'instruments non conventionnels pour ce qui est du rock, mais aussi chaque musicien est multi-instrumentiste. Pour les fans de Camel, Maneige est un incontournable.

A pretty good effort from a great British prog folk band. Album contains its share of classic Strawbs blended with some average american way of country ballads, blues and rock and roll (trying to expand the market) that prevents me to give it more than 3.5. These highlights come to my mind; the delicate and moving ''Golden Salamander'', ''So Shall our Love Die'', entirely acoustic with sumptuous 12 string guitars and a simple piano lead, ''Hanging in the Gallery'' which is another fabulous acoustic one and the marvelous proggy ''Promised Land'' which has a powerful, keyboard laden refrain and story lyrics.

Ahhh, The Snow Goose! This is a masterpiece of symphonic prog rock. In a cd store, 30 years ago, I've heard about a terrific band called Camel. Apparently, 'Snow Goose' had to be the best way to start with them. Since then this cd is never far from my cd player. Sooo inspired songwriting, so melodic, so deep. There are my top 5 albums: 'SnowGoose' = 'MoonMadness' = Mirage > 'Harbour Of Tears' = 'A Nod And A Wink'... If you love old Genesis, Premiata Forneria Marconi(PFM), Yes, Maneige(Quebec) and stuff, this is for you.

Amazing album made by this sympho prog band from Quebec. On "La Marches Des Hommes", they utilize lots of piano, mellotron, organ, clavinet in a similar way to that of classic GENESIS. With keyboardist Christian Simard as chief composer of the music, there are no weak tracks and the band shows their versatility and ease of creating catchy songs. Nothing too adventurous but still unique and very good. Production is top notch.

One might see the influence of ELP right from the beginning, but Triumvirat (more melodic and creative) just happen to be another band centered around an incredible keyboardist (in this case the classically trained Jurgen Fritz). Emerson, despite his greatness, has always looking for sensational solos, while Fritz playing is never excessive, and always integrated in the context of songs. If I had to describe this masterwork in few words:''Illusions on a Double Dimple'' is the best ELP album, ELP never did.

Masterpiece!! This is where I've got into this unique band who managed to do both such complex, adventurous and melodic music, flirting with medieval to a great effect. Each musician is multi-instrumentalist, and some of them are classically trained. Music has frequent changes in tempo, frequent use of syncopation, non-standard time-signatures, multi-part vocal harmonies etc etc...The playing of drummer John Weathers' brings a solid rock feel to their dissonant, eventful music. Here is the best way to go to: 'In a Glass House', 'Playing the Fool'(live), 'Acquiring The Taste', 'Free Hand' and 'Octopus'. Gentle Giant are an acquired taste. Each new listens will pay off.

John McLaughlin is an out-of-this-world guitarist, drummer Billy Cobham is so intense and powerful that he should keep a fire extinguisher near his kit. This is an essential, classic jazz fusion masterpiece that will take you in a wonderful journey through some highly adventurous landscapes. Sometimes dreamy and clement, but mostly heavy, harsh.. no wait: it's actually a colossal piece of work. My perso favs are the t/t, 'Miles Beyond', 'Sanctuary' and 'Hope'. It may take more than one listen to fully appreciate Mahavishnu Orchestra, but the experience will ultimately be more than rewarding

My least favorite of their classic era which includes everything from From The Witchwood to Ghosts. Still great, but not enough consistent, and half of the songs don't really appeal to me. The best song is obviously ''Tears and Pavan'', followed by the duo ''Down By The Sea/River''. ''Lady Fuschia'' is a grower, but it's nothing but an honorable mention.

Pretty good debut album. Less consistent than 'Acquiring The Taste' but it rawks. Highlights; The first 3 ones and 'Nothing at All' with its drum solo emerging in the middle of a classical piano ride that soon turns to a more jazzy feel. As Gentle Giant does so well.The band is essential for those who are fond of adventurous and complex electic prog rock. Also, the band offers some of the most beautiful melodies, and incomparable multi-part vocal harmonies and dissonant musical counterpoint.

Album contains couple of great melodies and had the potential to being a more or less good Genesis debut album, but production make look Genesis like a generic pop band with no future(!!!). The instrumentation is kind of muffled by the string and horns tardily overdubbed by their pop producer, Jonathan King.rPeter Gabriel already demonstrates his talent at the micro while Tony Banks offers interesting piano lines. Sadly, the other instruments was to some extent too low in the mix. In the end, a simple acoustic album would have been way more profitable. Bonus track and single 'Winter's Tale' has to be my fav song on here, even if it sounds nowhere near like Genesis. Two more bonus, 'One eyed Hound' and 'That's Me' are folk rock tracks with a lot of potential but again, only spoiled by the weak production. The band did their more important move when they fired their pop-oriented manager. If they didn't, they would not have been entering into the realm of prog anytime soon, and 'Trespass' would have arguably never seen the day.
