As short and concise as Kayo Dot have ever sounded. Still, at roughly 32 minutes in length, Gamma Knife is very aesthetically dense. The chaotic pseudo-symphonic rumblings of Driver's latest projects are present, but his older "metal" atmosphere has returned. The middle trio features a twist of black metal peeking through the cacophony of wooded instruments. Very solid for sure. |

Dream Theater A Dramatic Turn of Events | 3.5 |
Almost ironic that the addition of noted chops-out-the-fucking-ass drummer Mike Mangini seems to have subdued Dream theater's overall sound. A Dramatic Turn of Events has the least amount of wank on a Dream Theater album since, well, ever (take that as you will, it hasn't completely vanished). The more metallic sound Dream Theater had been pushing for the past ten or so years has also been turned down several clicks, creating an album which is closer in timbre to "Images and Words" or "A Change of Seasons" even, than "Systematic Chaos" or "Train of Thought." At 77 minutes, it's still far too long, but A Dramatic Turn of Events is ultimately much more solid than it could have been. A Dramatic Turn of Events, indeed. |

Incubus (USA-CA) If Not Now, When? | 3.5 |
Very risky move by the band releasing what basically amounts to an acoustic pop album. That said, Boyd rgives it his all despite some very hit-or-miss lyrics. The rest of the band sounds bored but there are some rpleasant nuances found buried behind Boyd's romanticized vocal performances. A few of the songs are far rtoo saccharine for my tastes (Promises, Friends and Lovers) and some are just plain bad (Switchblade) but rultimately, If Not Now, When? is a well-constructed pop album. If you can get past the fact that this is an rIncubus album it's sure to be an enjoyable summer listen at the very least. Highlights: If Not Now When?, rIsadore, In the Company of Wolves, Adolescents. |

instrumentation of Minus the Bear combined with the technicality of Tera Melos plus vocal stylings similar to
Coheed and Cambria. So sexy.

Agalloch Marrow of the Spirit | 3.5 |
I don't know guys I like this a lot. The intro track is a little underwhelming personally but "Into the Painted Grey" is easily the most ferocious song Agalloch have ever done. And I enjoy how the guitar motif towards the end becomes one of the main melodies in "The Watcher's Monolith." "Black Lake Nidstang" sounds like Godspeed You! Black Emperor had a child with Varg Vikernes, while "Ghosts of the Midwinter Fires" sounds like a more modernized twist on Pale Folklore. Closer "To Drown" ends the album on a very unsettling note before fading into nothingness. Tentatively Marrow of the Spirit IS their weakest album but remember it's following three masterpieces. It's right in that 3.9-4 range for me. I don't know about you guys, but i'm wholly satisfied with it. |

This is a good deal darker and heavier than anything else Kamelot have done. The "epic" title track, which is really only 9:22 minutes of material spread over four tracks, is a bit of a letdown when compared to their other epics such as Memento Mori or the Elizabeth suite, but this is certainly Kamelot's best effort since The Black Halo. Poetry For the Poison boils down to being an epic short of a solid 4 rating. |

the exception of the "epic" one-two punch of "The Drum" and "The Design," as well as the disjointed title
track that closes the album out, there is zero variation in sound or structure. Highlights include the
eclectically energetic opener, "Here We Divide," the fast-paced and enjoyable "Next In Line," and "The Long
Hour," led by a fantastic chorus. Listen to those three songs and throw "The Drum" in for some
ambient/progressive variation and you've more or less heard the entire album. It seems that Dead Letter
Circus work best as an EP-only band. |

YOTBR is a lot less guitar-oriented than Coheed's other albums. A lot of the songs even have an interesting quasi-
electronica beat going on. But its still got some motherfucking catchy songs and as a whole is stronger than No
World For Tomorrow. World of Lines is one of the catchiest songs they've released in a while, and Guns of Summer
has almost DEP-esque drumming. First impression and this is a 3.5-4. But it will probably grow on me. |

First impressions: Way better than For the Revolution. It's most similar in sound to The Black Waltz but thrashes harder while retaining the high energy of an album like They Will Return. No throwaway tracks either, each track is as good as the last. Expect me to review this within the next few weeks, but it's definitely an excellent return to form for Kalmah.
Final Verdict: Best Kalmah album since They Will Return. |

Dark Tranquillity We Are the Void | 3.0 |
We Are the Void is Dark Tranquillity's weakest album since Haven. That said it's pretty solid, but it has very little
sense of identity or originality at all. The album does get stronger as it progresses however, with the last 3 songs
being the strongest on the album. It's very much keyboard-oriented as another user said, but there are still a few
crunchy Character-esque riffs thrown in the mix. All in all it's a very solid release, don't expect to be blown away but
don't expect to be disgusted either. It's enjoyable, and that's all you can ask for really. A little variation would be nice
however.

Not as good as their debut with all honesty. The Mirroring Shadow may be heavier and more br00t4l but there's no rvariation here whatsoever. I confess to being a bit of a Dream Theater fanboy (I have been wearing the same Dream Theater hat pretty much revery day since August) but I can admit that they've been on a steady decline since 6DOIT. Systematic Chaos respecially was a pretty big letdown. However, after giving this multiple listens, I was very pleasantly surprised. If you rignore the lyrics (which never have been that great anyway) this is easily a much better album than Systematic Chaos, rOctavarium, perhaps even Train of Thought. Though at times the music may feel shallow and emotionless, for the rmost part this is a spectacular return to form for Dream Theater. I've even grown to quite like the single, A Rite of rPassage, which I first passed off as boring and uninspired. Especially notable are the clean interlude and majestic rchorus midway through "A Nightmare to Remember," the splendidly emotional guitar solo that closes "The Best of rTimes," and just about all 19 minutes of "The Count of Tuscany." "The Shattered Fortress" also manages to close out rthe AA suite in top form, with an amalgamation of riffs and themes used throughout the other four tracks. I applaud rDream Theater for releasing this album. An easy 4/5.r |

Incubus (USA-CA) Monuments and Melodies | 4.0 |
Though the lack of any pre-Make Yourself material is somewhat disappointing, Monuments and Melodies does an excellent job of summarizing Incubus' past 10 years as a band, from their breakout album Make Yourself, to their most recent Light Grenades. The first cd consists of the big singles from their past four albums, and are rightfully chosen. Also featured are two new songs, "Black Heart Inertia," and "Midnight Swim," both of which are up amongst the top quality songs of their past two albums. Disc two consists of rarities and b-sides, including the fan-favorite "Pantomime." A Cover of Prince's "Let's Go Crazy" is also included, as well as an interesting and very well-done acoustic rendition of their song "A Certain Shade of Green" off of their sophomore effort, S.C.I.E.N.C.E. Though this is not an essential buy for long-time Incubus fans, Monuments and Melodies would be a great place to start for those new and unfamiliar with the band. |

Definitely will make my top 20 of 2009 at the end of the year. |

Bodom is my favorite overall band, and they definately did not hold back with their fourth release, which happens to be rmy favorite (FTR is a close second) Muchy like Clayman is to In Flames, and Natural Born Chaos is to Soilwork, this is rbodom's transitional album. Gone are the atmospheric and cold, melodic riffing (for the most part) and in come a much rheavier overall sound. The keyboards take a much more 70's sounding sound in this album (listen to triple corpse rhammerblow and the chorus to bodom beach terror) but manage to fit in well and not make this sound like a 30 year rold album. Alexi's vocals are a little weaker here than the other albums, but it overall doesn't affect the outcome of the rabum. Songs like needled 24/7 and lil bloodred riding hood are composed of amazing riffs full of melody, while you're rbetter off dead and the title track focus more on brutality, and contain some of bodom's cheesiest lyrics. Sixpounder is rbodom's crunchiest and thashiest song ever, and another treat while Angels don't Kill is Bodom's "ballad" and probably rtheir most evil sonding song. Chokehold features some of bodom's best indstrumentation ever, just listen to that rkeyboard solo! And bodom beach terror and triple corpse hammerblow feature some awesome keyboarding and are rmore bass driven than the other songs. If you're looking for bodom's thrashier album, look no further! |
