In fact the tracks that sound like "The Killers" only slightly darker are the best. A killer opening to dance tunes like Miss Murder to more emotional songs like Summer Shudder and Love like Winter, it also grows on you the more you listen to it. The only song I felt was out of place was Kill Caustic and the album could have done without it IMOShade Empire Intoxicate O.S.3.5Ihsahn The Adversary4.0Arctic Monkeys Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not4.02005 Korn See You on the Other Side3.5System of a Down Hypnotize3.5John Mayer Trio Try!4.5Panic! at the Disco A Fever You Can't Sweat Out3.0This is definitely a solid album but fails to stand out in terms of musicianship with the sound coming off as many other pop punk bands today in the first half. Where they really show their uniqueness is in the second half. There's no denying that this is catchy stuff and the lyrics are much more offbeat than what most bands of the genre deal with, making them a little less creative American version of the Arctic MonkeysDisturbed Ten Thousand Fists3.5Sigur Ros Takk...4.0Simple Minds Black & White 0505053.5After Forever Remagine4.5Our Lady Peace Healthy In Paranoid Times3.5Arch Enemy Doomsday Machine3.5Static-X Start A War2.0Foo Fighters In Your Honor4.0Coldplay X&Y3.5Audioslave Out of Exile3.0System of a Down Mezmerize3.5Limp Bizkit The Unquestionable Truth - Part I2.0Porcupine Tree Deadwing4.0Mudvayne Lost and Found4.5This album is a real grower. Has some gems and is very well made technical nu-metal. More than just stuff to headbang to. From the epic Choices to straight all out headbangers like Determined, this album might go onto become a nu-metal classic of sorts, showing how diverse it can sound (not a quality generally associated with the genre)Adema Planets1.5Kamelot The Black Halo4.03 Doors Down Seventeen Days2.52004 Evanescence Anywhere But Home3.5U2 How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb3.5A Perfect Circle eMOTIVe2.5Korn Greatest Hits Vol. 13.5Sum 41 Chuck3.5Lamb of God Ashes of the Wake3.5Alter Bridge One Day Remains3.5The Killers Hot Fuss3.5Shade Empire Sinthetic3.5Jem Finally Woken3.5Incubus (USA-CA) A Crow Left of the Murder...3.5Auf Der Maur Auf Der Maur3.0I've wanted to review this for a long time but always put it off thinking that rating a more or less obscure artist with something just above average wouldn't really generate interest. More or less because, let's face it, Melissa Auf Der Maur used to be famous, with bass gigs with both The Hole and The Smashing Pumpkins in her career kitty but this is very close to lame. There are some interesting songs here but the cliches outweigh the positives. Further, well, seems Ms. Auf Der Maur was some sort of sex symbol in the 90s. This record sounds like she's still trying to live those days, with premature lyrics (and ironically mediocre bass). The redeeming factor is the other instrumentation though resulting in some very good alt. rock moments. It's good for a few listens, as music somewhere in the background. I was a little disappointed. It's brutal, there's no doubting that and Progenies (minus the second verse) is a pinnacle of sorts as far as metal goes IMO but the overall album is a little more droning. Maybe my opinion here stems from the fact that I don't listen to a lot of extreme metal, but I felt that the production let down the album a lot. I heard very little lower end bass frequencies making distortion just seem like noise instead of heavy and as such all the tracks began to sound alike. But it does have its positives too of which some are the brilliant use of symphony to add to the "brutal"-ity of the songs, Shagrath's vocals and the technical yet melodic (most of the times anyway) instrumentation; this album, in the end, holds the distinction of making me revisit a set of genres I had shunned as meaningless noise.Iron Maiden Dance of Death4.0Arch Enemy Anthems of Rebellion3.5Adema Unstable2.0Metallica St. Anger1.5Deftones Deftones4.0Godsmack Faceless3.0Evanescence Fallen3.5Kamelot Epica4.5Mushroomhead XIII4.02002 Dashboard Confessional MTV Unplugged3.0System of a Down Steal This Album!3.0Mudvayne The End of All Things to Come3.53 Doors Down Away from the Sun3.5Porcupine Tree In Absentia4.0Disturbed Believe3.0Coldplay A Rush of Blood to the Head4.0Red Hot Chili Peppers By the Way4.0Maroon 5 Songs About Jane3.5Alanis Morissette Under Rug Swept3.0Korn Untouchables3.5Goo Goo Dolls Gutterflower3.52001 Mushroomhead XX4.0Hoobastank Hoobastank3.5Lostprophets The Fake Sound Of Progress3.0Incubus (USA-CA) Morning View4.0P.O.D. They somehow manage to escape all the laws that restrict musicianship in pop music and come out with songs that you fall in love with. Listening to songs like Grade 9 you realize the music is like the dynamite exploding in the coyote's face and nothing happening to him other than his fur turning black. And it is exactly that. Pure and simple fun. And that's just on the surface. Scratch it and you see a wealth of talent and musicianship that completely takes you by surprise.
