Divine Silence Promise You3.0
I remember purchasing this album a while back from eBay, under the impression that Aaron from My Dying Bride was musically involved. Turns out, he was just the album cover artist (and what a great job he did). Anyway, it has been a while since I have listened to Promise You, and I decided to refresh my memory, as well as give this unknown band a little well deserved publicity. The first track is no doubt the weakest on the disc, starting off with a very happy, late 90's Paradise Lost sounding riff. The album only gets better from there, as it becomes a little darker. Stand out tracks are To Live or Die and Reflections. The closing track, A Day From You, returns to the major key joyful feel that began the disc, yet concludes with an incredible, emotional ending. As a whole, this is a solid album. The guitar work is very good, solid bass lines, and male vocals that range from haunting spoken word passages to brutal death metal growls. The only drawbacks on Promise You are the flat female vocals and the drumming, which is pretty good, but very repetitive and uneventful. The tempo on Promise You rarely changes, which makes it a little more like a gothic rather than a metal band. Fans of mid 90's Paradise Lost, Anathema, and Katatonia would surely like this, but I can't help but think it could have been better.

Opeth Heritage3.0
I realize this album has been out for a year or so, but I just recently picked it up. Due to all of it's mixed reviews, it was never at the top of my priority list. Opeth has always been a more daring metal band. Ever since their classic debut Orchid, they have separated themselves from what is typical in extreme metal. Heritage seems to take that mantra a little too far. Post Damnation era Opeth has been getting more and more progressive rock sounding, and Heritage is as prog rock as it gets. Opeth went as far as not having any death metal vocals on this album, which served as a great duality with their previous two releases. Heritage is not to be confused with the Damnation, which was meant to (in my opinion) be a mellow, dreamy album. I would never called Heritage a bad album though, as the musicianship contained within is top notch (as always with Opeth), and song structure very creative. I just found it a little too progressive rock sounding for my taste. If there is one thing Opeth can never be accused of though, it being a stale band. Face it, no one wants to hear Orchid or Blackwater Park over and over again, but sometimes a band can push the envelope a little too much. Fans of Mikael Akerfeldt's primary influences will surely devour this.
