some of the best instrumental folk music I've ever heard. Her primary instrument is the celtic harp, and her playing is extremely poignant and intricate. It's worth checking out just for her harp playing, but the addition of violins, cellos, and pianos take it to a whole new level. Just listen to it |

While everyone else is completely focused on the new Kacey Musgraves (and rightfully so) this has been my personal obsession. Released on the same day, it actually complements "Golden Hour" quite nicely. It's not as pop-oriented, but the seamless, relaxed blend of country, folk, and blues makes for the perfect springtime soundtrack. It's been nothing but this and "Golden Hour" back to back the last few days. wtf I love country now [3] |

As "Finisterre" plays out, there's little you can do but sit in awe, dumbfounded by the amount of skill and precision oozing from each deafening, turbulent track. It's kind of like the band's last album, "Stellar", but on steroids. There's less time to appreciate the ambient sections because they're quickly trampled in the wake of breakneck riffs, but the band's mixture of loud black metal and ambience has never been as potent. |

Makes the epic Vigilance Perennial seem like child's play. They've been warming up to a masterpiece, and this is
it. A moving, indescribably beautiful piece of work that can't be recommended highly enough. In a genre that was
starting to grow stale for me, this is a fitting reminder of why I fell in love with atmospheric black metal in the first
place. "Patterns in Mythology" contains all the depth, emotion and instrumental touches of the genre's most
massive peaks. Instant Fucking Classic.

Frank Turner Be More Kind | 3.0 |
It's not Frank's best, but also not nearly as bad as it's being made out to be. With the politically-charged themes this could have been a heavy-handed mess, but it's perhaps Turner's most laid back and carefree album to date. Of course, this will translate as boring to some, but it's a nice change of pace for a man who typically churns out rowdy punk tunes. Fear not, his knack for stringing together clever verses like falling dominos is as evident as ever on "Little Changes", and some horns are even thrown in for good measure. It's not the loud Turner many of us have grown accustomed to, but as opener "Don't Worry" makes apparent, it doesn't have to be. |

Already deserves a spot in my top 10 albums of 2019, and it?s only climbing... how about that somewhat Pixies-esque 6-minute closer made up of fuzzy guitar distortion? It?s just one of many exceptional moments that makes up Four of Arrows. One of the year?s most pleasant surprises that you should listen to if you want to feel warm inside. |

If you love Spanish Love Songs but overlooked this album you're in a for a treat. Hard Girls are a loud trio formed within the confines of a California carpet company - a job that apparently brings a relentless anxiety to their sound. I'm glad they have an outlet where they can just explode when not dealing with customers and their anal fiber preferences. Whatever your job is, there's no denying how natural it feels to let loose and sing along with this rockin' set of tunes. |

Holy Shit. From the opening track "OG Bule Sky", it's apparent the influences Hot Mulligan wear on
their sleeve: a bit of Tiny Moving Parts with a dose of The Wonder Years and Free Throw. Yet, the
execution here is so stellar - the production so insanely crisp - that it simply puts most of
their counterparts to shame. Forget originality... give me an album that knows where the ball is
coming from, and knocks it out of the park with style. |

An instant classic that will tug at anyone?s heartstrings provided they have a soul. |

The beautiful thing about this album is it really does feel like three albums wrapped into one: each section possessing its own unique heartbeat. Based on Virginia Woolf novels, it requires no prior knowledge of the books for interpretation. Across three very different acts, the music does all the talking for us - from the serene opening tracks to a jarring midsection, and an expansive and experimental closer. Whether you're completely unfamiliar with Richter's extensive list of works or you're an avid fan, Three Worlds has a little something for everyone. |

MxPx MxPx | 3.8 |
How the hell did MxPx make it this far into their career without releasing a self-titled album? Funded by fans, this is easily some of the band's strongest material since "Slowly Going the Way of the Buffalo." Their albums are often plagued by filler, but here the band completely shred their way through 30 minutes of nostalgic punk rock with few missteps. A solid return to form, to say the least - they've rarely sounded this sharp or full of adrenaline. |

Nhor Within the Darkness Between the Starlight | 4.0 |
One of the strongest black metal releases of the decade. What really sets Nhor apart in the sea of one-man black metal acts lies in the minimalistic, atmospheric piano melodies. Often less is more with Nhor, and his ability to seamlessly switch from a crushing wall of black metal to sparse pianos is nothing short of impressive. Bonus points awarded for the quiet moments being just as captivating as the louder ones. |

The vocals and melodies throughout "Interstate Gospel" are so damn smooth. Lots of variety throughout. Sometimes they go for a more sarcastic, playful nature (see "Stop Drop and Roll One") but the slow burners like "5 Acres of Turnips" show the softer side of Pistol Annies that I can't get enough of. One of the best country albums of 2018. |

There's an abundance of nice, breezy melodies to be found on Soccer Mommy's Clean, but none of them with the gorgeous, smooth demeanor of "Scorpio Rising." It's a perfect song for the early spring - Sophie Allison's crisp delivery detailing everything from kissing in a park to metaphors of bubbly Coca-Cola. So, what makes this song so special? It all comes down to intimacy. It's the only track on Clean where Sophie sounds like she's performing in the same space as you, without any fuzz or hazy demeanor to hide behind. This is simply Sophie Allison, mask removed and all. |

One of the most underrated punk bands on the planet are back with "Peace and Love." This thing is nothing short of a blast from front to back - a fine representation of a band that's been kicking ass for over 25 years. There are huge guitars and gruff vocals to be sure, but the band have also mastered the art of melody, with some of the strongest hooks of their lengthy career. Listen to this band, you won't regret it. |

I liked Beat the Champ. It was a fun Mountain Goats album, but I surely didn't love it. When I heard John Darnielle was switching the theme from wrestling to gothic culture for his latest album, I wasn't sure what to make of it. Right off the bat, though, Goths blows its predecessor out of the water. With no guitars to speak of on the album, Darnielle's songwriting is more focused, and the whole thing is gorgeously orchestrated. Upbeat horns and jazzy sections are glittered throughout the surprisingly bright album: probably the exact opposite of what a typical goth would listen to. It's satirical, full of life, and surprisingly accessible for a Mountain Goats album. |

I've never heard anything else by Waxahatchee, but this EP seems to improve with each listen. Confident and soaring vocal melodies are given plenty of room to breathe over delicate pianos. Things close out nicely with the gorgeous ballad, "Takes so Much." Not much to complain about, really. |
Wayfarer Children of the Iron Age | 3.2 |
A frustrating album in the sense that there are some great moments, but the overall experience is brought down by some equally mediocre ones. That being said, 'TowardMountains' is more than enough reason to give this album a shot. Featuring the drummer from Blood Incantation, the song gets a really cool, brooding drum intro and contains vocals that seamlessly trade off between death metal growls and black metal shrieks. Despite some pitfalls, they're a band with strong potential. |

One of the year's most overlooked gems is a real treat in the neofolk genre. With a sound that rests comfortably between german dark folk (think Forseti, Nebelung) and a more neoclassical approach along the lines of Vali and Musk Ox, the debut by Woljager is sure to have a wide appeal. Due to the large helping of variety and melancholy, it's easily one of the strongest neofolk albums in recent years. |
