I really love this album. It has the musicality of Prog and the heart of Punk. All done with a lo-fi sensibility. Very cool record. This and Talk Like Blood are the apex of the 31knots discography. |

Guided by Voices Sandbox | 2.0 |
Their worst effort. The only GbV record worth skipping. |
Guided by Voices Same Place the Fly Got Smashed | 3.0 |
Some very good songs (and one great one) hindered by ridiculous panning of vocals and certain instruments make this a tough one to rate any higher. |
Guided by Voices King Shit and the Golden Boys | 3.0 |
An album of throw away tracks (some of which are really great) collected specifically for Scat Records and included in the box set of all GbV's early releases. Primarily for fans only, but still pretty cool. |
Guided by Voices Devil Between My Toes | 3.0 |
Guided by Voices Tonics and Twisted Chasers | 3.0 |
This is a Sprout/Pollard joint, making it kind of the first Airport 5 album. |
Guided by Voices Forever Since Breakfast | 3.5 |
Guided by Voices Self-Inflicted Aerial Nostalgia | 3.5 |
After the disappointing second album, Sandbox, this is a nice little album. Filled with great ideas that don't always work but do indeed entertain. |
Guided by Voices Clown Prince of the Menthol Trailer | 3.5 |
Guided by Voices I Am a Scientist EP | 3.5 |
Great version of GbV's best song. Also worth having for "Do The Earth." |
Guided by Voices Class Clown Spots A UFO | 3.5 |
Guided by Voices Earthquake Glue | 4.0 |
Often overlooked in the vast GbV catalog, Earthquake Glue is a rare glimpse into Robert Pollard's song writing formula. The Who looms very large over the whole thing - and to good effect. |
Guided by Voices Static Airplane Jive EP | 4.0 |
Guided by Voices Half Smiles Of The Decomposed | 4.5 |
Guided by Voices Mag Earwhig! | 4.5 |
A new Guided by Voices emerges and it's really good. |
Guided by Voices Human Amusements at Hourly Rates | 4.5 |
Guided by Voices Isolation Drills | 4.5 |
Many GbV fans were thrilled that this record was not a repeat Do The Collapse - the most hated album in the Guided By Voices catalog. What it is, then, is the loud, rocking slab Pollard always wanted to do. And it has "Glad Girls." Good enough for me! |
Guided by Voices Vampire on Titus | 4.5 |
I have no idea why I love this record so much. It's dark, ugly, sloppy and displays some of the worst drumming ever put on tape. Horrible. But amazing. |
Guided by Voices Universal Truths and Cycles | 4.5 |
After GbV flirted with the Big Rock sounds of the previous two releases on quasi-major TVT Records, they return to Matador and the results are actually surprising. This is not Bee Thousand or Alien Lanes and it was never planned as such. It is, however, an album filled with really great songs. What else do you people want? |
Guided by Voices Hold on Hope | 4.5 |
This is a great EP. If you liked Do The Collapse (and I do, I do!) you'll love this as well. |
Guided by Voices Sunfish Holy Breakfast | 4.5 |
Home to the GbV classic "If We Wait," this is pretty much a must-have. |
Guided by Voices Bee Thousand | 5.0 |
Guided by Voices Alien Lanes | 5.0 |
Guided by Voices Under the Bushes Under the Stars | 5.0 |
Guided by Voices Do The Collapse | 5.0 |
I can truly understand why many die-hard fans of this band deride this Ric Ocasek produced album: it just doesn't sound like the GbV many of us fell in love with. It sounds like a sell-out. But it's not. Not by a long shot. Packed with some of Pollard's best-ever songs, even the limp "Hold On Hope" holds up well despite the strings and what-not, making this the anti-Bee Thousand. I love it. And am also thankful it was a one-off. |
Guided by Voices Propeller | 5.0 |
The beginning of Robert Pollard's greatness. A true classic. |
Guided by Voices Fast Japanese Spin Cycle | 5.0 |
GbV's best EP features two cleaned-up versions of songs previously available on Vampire On Titus. Pollard at his peak. |
Guided by Voices Let's Go Eat The Factory | 5.0 |
This is a true Guided by Voices album, not a Pollard solo record with the GbV name plate. The Tobin Sprout
contributions are not only welcome, they are crucial. The Pollard songs are indeed a mixed bag but all of
Sprout's are great - like a guy who knows these are the only songs he's written in 15 years that will be
listened to. This is not an easy listen though. It is not a Boston Spaceships record. It is at times ugly. It has
a little Vampire On Titus about it. This is quite surprising and very refreshing. Yes, it may take a few spins
to really understand where the boys are heading here. But even in hectic ol' 2012, the time and effort is
well, well worth it. |
Guided by Voices The Bears For Lunch | 5.0 |
Of the three 2012 GbV albums, this one is the best. Whereas Let's Go Eat The Factory took some time to appreciate (but was worth the effort) and Class Clown Spots A UFO was more immediate (but did not improve with repeat listens) The Bears For Lunch has everything long time fans love about Dayton's most famous AARP members. A great batch of songs with the right level of production. Highly recommended. To these ears it is the best Pollard-affiliated release since Isolation Drill. |

The transformation of Mock Orange from a better-than-average emo band to an amazing indie band is complete with this 2008 release. Squiggly guitars, falsetto vocals and tons of hooks are more than enough to make Captain Love the best record Modest Mouse never recorded. |
Mock Orange Disguised As Ghosts | 5.0 |
The boys from Evansville, Indiana break free from the Built to Spill comparisons and record their best album yet. More acoustic than previous efforts but no less powerful. Full of great melodies and cool guitar sounds. |
