Metallica launched their quest for world domination with Kill 'em All, then made their massive nucelar bomb with Ride the Lightning, now it is time for the bomb to burst.
In comes, Master of Puppets.
One word for me could describe this album: Atmosphere
Every song on this hour masterpiece has an atmospheric feeling to it.
"Battery"-Heart-pounding drums, cruchy riffs, it feels like you are in the mosh pit taking out people in your sight. If Metallica is known for something, it is a good opening song for an album.
"Master of Puppets"-Not many bands can put a song that contains moshing, headbanging, and a lighter in the air moment simulaneously. These were the first sounds I heard when I was born. And I was hooked on Metallica.
"The Thing That Should Not Be"-This is a good song, but it kinda drags along at times. Not as good as "For Whom the Bell Tolls," but a good song none the less.
"Sanitarium"-The token ballad, I listen to this more than Fade to Black and One . It has that dark, errie feeling to it from the intro riff. Plus, a nice, killer solo to close the song.
"Disposable Heroes"-This gives you the feeling of being in a war zone, behind enemy lines, machine guns a-firing. This is the song I listen to the least on the album, but a good song at best.
"Leper Messiah"-I'm a sucker for infectious riffs, such as this song. I find this to be one of Metallica's underrated songs. It goes from a methodical riff-cruncher, to an all out headbanger by the time the solo kicks in.
"Orion"-Enough can't be said about this instrumental. I tend to listen to this at night, just listen to the bass intro. It sounds like your at a space-station. So what if it's 8 minutes long, this is Metallica at it's finest.
"Damage Inc."-Out to close the album is the fastest song on the album, and a great way to close the album. You could argue that this was Lars' best drum performance on the album, but that would be a tall order. This along with "Metal Militia," and "Phantom Lord" should be played live more often.
Puppets is one of the few albums I can listen to from start to finish without skipping or shuffling. It's metal at its best.
Some will argue that Ride the Lightning is better than Master of Puppets, but that's a question for another day.
