Did someone say too much? Well for any other band one of these discs would constitute a great album. It's a testimony to the relentless nature of this band that this is so. They are excellent at what they do and what they do is interesting. I think disc two is the highlight, a 42 minute epic that provides a film like score to a movie we can see in our heads... |

Husker Du Metal Circus | 3.5 |
Having undoubtedly spawned from the hardcore punk scene of the early 80’s, that Husker Du would evolve into something different is evident on Metal Circus. Songs like Real World and Deadly Skies present Bob Mould’s critique of mindless protest against the status quo. This resonates with lyrics like ‘People talk about anarchy and taking up a fight, well I’m afraid of things like that, I lock my doors at night’ or ‘I like to protest, but I’m not sure what it’s for’. This kind of cynicism might have been more apt in 2004 with the Punkvoter movement. Grant Hart’s songs on Metal Circus are a lot more mellow, employing slower beats and less distortion than Mould’s songs. However lyrically, Hart is quite compelling. The self esteem encouragement of It’s Not Funny Anymore is counter balanced with the eerie Diane. Diane is just about the best song on Metal Circus, telling the story a killer rapist who charms his victim into his car before knifing her. The fact that it’s told from the killer’s point of view makes it particularly weird, a weirdness complimented by the chilling repetiton of the victims name in the chorus. The tightness and speed of Hart’s drumming is quite special and together with Mould’s growling vocals and Greg Norton’s bouncing bass lines, it makes the Metal Circus experience quite an intense one. The ep ends in a cacophony of guitar noise against a steady drum and bass line, typical of that part of Husker Du that made them so unique. Musically, Metal Circus could be seen as a format for the 1984’s Zen Arcade, the most enduring aspect of their legacy, but this stands on it’s own two feet, this is great. |

I went to see Iron Maiden and felt dissapointed because it was nothing like this. The sheer sense of occasion is enough to make this one of the most exciting live performances i've ever watched. |

Pink Floyd The Dark Side of the Moon | 5.0 |
The music on Dark Side of The Moon doesn't always mirror the issues of the songs, such as on The Wall. DSOM is more like a record one can listen to when trying to see a bigger picture. Dealing with universal themes like the struggle to adjust to modern life, the fear of death and the idiocy of War, this album above all else, lets us know that we're not alone. |
Pink Floyd Animals | 5.0 |
My interest in Pink Floyd is born out of the combination of great music with thought provoking concepts. On Animals however, i think the concept is slightly weaker than DSOM or The Wall. As far as i can tell it's a musical tribute to Orwell's Animal Farm. Whatever about the concept, i find the music on Animals the most interesting thing about. The three main songs are lengthly epics which do more than enough to compensate for my failure to see the bigger picture. Don't get me wrong, i know the animals are metaphors for human charachters. It's the sound of this album alone that earns it's classic status. And hey, there's nothing wrong with the politics either. |
Pink Floyd The Wall | 5.0 |
From the self indulgence of depression, to the roots of fascism and tyranny, The Wall truly is an amazing work. Complimented by the musicianship of David Gilmour, Roger Waters songs are among bleakest known to mankind, but that doesn't mean they're not relevant. Not forgetting Gilmour songs like Young Lust and Comfortably Numb, which provide a touch of pure genius to an already amazing concept. The Wall is everything we dare not discuss. In my opinion, the most interesting artistic statement of all time. |
