| By turning up the guitars and putting her more gossamer musical ideas aside, the Wolfe has released her most crushing, visceral album yet. All that blank space in her sound has been filled in, with gritty, doomy guitars and pitch-black noise. Over all the scorched earth and ash, she weaves her grim poetry and howls for the moon. Though I'm sure we'll hear her gloriously understated, quieter side again, for now we have what is certainly the most substantial Chelsea Wolfe album so far, and maybe her best. |

| At its best, Dirt is cathartic, hard-hitting, and even very catchy. In those moments (most of them on Side A), the album feels deserving of its reputation as a grunge masterpiece, and one of the best rock albums of the 90s. However, there are plenty of times that Dirt drags and sags for this listener, examples being the title track or "God Smack". The towering, distorted guitars and macho crooning aren't remarkable in of themselves, nor do they seem to compliment each other. These songs simply plod along, with no hooks, nor climaxes, nor lyrics, nor sonic details worth mentioning. Sure, I get the urge to pull a stinkface and the devil horns as they chug along, but my attention isn't grabbed, nor rewarded by closer inspection. There are several blistering and classic tracks here, but almost as many which never come together in a satisfying way. |

| Some fantastic ideas taking place in the foreground on this thing. Sadly, these guys seem to lack the compositional know-how to flesh out their songs. When the other layers of instrumentation (bass, percussion etc) are so lazily and amateurishly stacked atop one another, with very little interplay between them, the overall effect is greatly diminished. They have the icing down to an art form, but the cake beneath is half-baked. These guys were clearly never a bona fide band, jamming for hours on end in a shitty room but building ideas of musical cooperation and interplay in the process. As a result, a sense of the musically inept plagues even their prettiest songs. Peek beyond that captivating melody or soaring chorus, and you'll find a group of guys desperately adding layers of stems in an attempt to fill out the rest of the song. Fleetingly beautiful, but crumbles under closer inspection. |

wherein the singer growls awkwardly over tepid synths and Peter Hook-wannabe bass licks. There seems to be a market
for this kind of thing, but I can hardly stand it.

| Nicolas Jaar's deep, spacey music is ripe for remix and reinterpretation, right? This EP sure suggests otherwise. None of these remixes managed to show its original in an exciting new light. Instead of finding the grooves and the hooks lurking with Nicolas Jaar's soundscapes and bringing them to the fore, these four remixes opt instead to bury them under even more layers of greyscale ambience. The result is four lifeless and listless songs, wallowing in a soup of pointless minutiae, with very little sense of urgency or momentum to them whatsoever. Oh, and three of the four remixes are based upon the same song. Even people who like the way these songs have been reinterpreted will struggle to listen to this EP from start to finish. |
