Though they aren't covering much new territory, this is still awesome. And the sound is just about as different from their past work as Act I is from Act II. Might not be a crazy new direction, but it's still more awesome Dear Hunter. And who else sounds like these guys anyways?

At this point, I've only listened to Acts 1 to 3 and I think the third opus is the best in terms of lyrics, but 2 is much better musically speaking. 2>3>1

Not the strongest of the acts, but still pretty good. Very strong closer, however. The songs themselves are amazing, especially "Mustard Gas" and "Father/Son". However, some of it thematically doesn't match up as strongly as the other acts, despite this album having the most action (besides Act 6).

I love The Dear Hunter to pieces, and this album is pretty good. But compared to their other stuff, it's not good at all. Not as diverse, and a little more mainstream (but I don't think this band will become mainstream, thank god), and a little more simplistic. Not as amazing. Still, good.

Casey Crescenzo further embraces the theatrics of his silly little band, but remembers to leave in the heart and soul. Thankfully, the extra theatrical touches never overwhelm the expertly composed, catchy-as-hell music. The album as a whole is far more consistent than either of the previous acts, and while there isn't one moment that rivals "Red Hands", there are plenty of moments that cumulatively compete with it (the Son/Father/Life and Death suite, for example.) Act III pushes forward just about every aspect of TDH's music to create a package far more powerful than anything the band has yet released.

While generally weaker than Act II throughout, this is still a very good album. Considering that, much of my disappointment in this can be attributed to the extremely high expectations I had.
This is a much more cohesive album that Act II, and that is where the problem begins. It seems that Casey has really settled on his "sound" and as such, all the songs exhibit a certain feel. Many of them are overly bombastic, a trait that was featured in Act I and Act II but not to this extent. The beauty of Act II was how erratic it was at times -- bouncing from one genre to another, one mood to another. Don't get me wrong, there's a lot of different things going on in Act III, but it all feels toned down and less inspired.
I disagree with some of the other reviewers who feel this gets weaker as it goes along. I believe it starts out weak and actually gets stronger as it goes along.
Possibly a 4.0, but a 3.5 feels more accurate.

i see you all are pretty much haters of this album so far. such BS! how many "silly bands" are doing this right now in this genre? it's pretty damn good so far, i'm on my third listen and i'm only giving it a 4 right now because i don't want to jump the gun. but in general... solid release. they deserve more credit.
