Review Summary: Concept records, who’d make them?

The answer is Black Veil Brides (henceforth BVB), not once or twice, but now three times. On the group’s third concept effort, The Phantom tomorrow (henceforth TPT) the overarching concept of the 2 previous concept outings (2013’s Wretched And Divine, 2018’s Vale) of a group of Outlaw’s taking on an evil overseeing empire has been put on hold. This time it would seem that the concept of TPT is a more straightforward comic book fight of super heroes (The Blackbird) Vs super villains (9 / Nine), which of course still makes for an engaging listen, as it would appear that BVB fire on all cylinders when crafting concept albums and worlds to become immersed in.

The Unfortunate COVID-19 Pandemic actually granted BVB more time out of touring to write and record this record, so what are the results? The answer; damn good. I have made no bones about it on this website, I am a BVB fan, I enjoy BVB - however what I will note about this record is that unlike the previous 2 BVB albums, there is factors in this record that could really appeal to those not quite onboard the BVB train, hell maybe even straight up detractors.

“Torch” “Born Again” and “Scarlet Cross” showcase the band’s signature Pop Metal tinge with roaring Choruses and skilful guitar work, Whilst “The Wicked one” and “Crimson Skies” bring the heavier side of BVB into the foray, all the time never sacrificing the bands penchant for writing memorable, catchy songs of course. TPT also continues BVB’s use of strings and piano which the band has included since debut, albeit more present in this album than ever before, with two complete string pieces included. The violin of course being a nice touch for a modern rock band and in fact; ALL instruments on this album are remarkable, BVB do not miss a beat and the playing on this album is impeccable.

Frontman Andy Biersack shows more range than ever, there is no way around it, his voice on this record is downright POWERFUL, always present, and simply ear candy if you are open to rock voices of the baritone persuasion. The songwriting seems sharper than ever, and I always mention this because at their heart of hearts, maybe even more than being a rock band, BVB are song-writers. The Main focus of their music is to be palatable, enjoyed and immersive to rock fans and even those outside of rock’s rugged realms, TPT accomplishes this with ease, without ever betraying the bands core sound and fanbase.

I have a soft spot for these guys. Not as good as Wretched for me, but this is nice for a quick rock fix.
