Matchbox 20 - Yourself Or Someone Like You
This is an awesome CD, if your into this kinda music even if your not it wont be too bad. But I have a pretty wide variety of musical taste, but anyways this is a cd where everyone song to me is a hit. Infacty I think most of the songs on this CD were singles.
Rob Thomas is a great vocalist and a pretty good lyrical writer as well...mainly in the love song department.
1.) Real World
Starts off with a little drum like countdown thing, then a simple but catchy guitar riff then bursts into the verse. Possibly one of Matchbox 20's biggest hits/best songs. The chorus guitar captures the genre of matchbox very well and its quite catchy. I like the lyrics for the chorus of this song "Straight up what did you hope to learn about here if i was someone else would this all fall apart strange where were you when we started this game I wish the real world would just stop hassiling me."
Rob Thomas sings very nicely in this song, the lyrics can connect pretty easily with the listener "I wish the real world would just stop hasaling me" Most people should be able to relate to that. Theres a nice little melodic solo followed by the chorus to bring us to the end of a great song.
5/5
2.) Long Day
You dont have to wait for anything, Rob and the acoustic guitar kicks in quickly with a very nice intro good rhyming sounds very good. Then it stops for a second, and Rob comes back with a deeper angrier voice and the electric guitat kicks in and again people can connect to some lines in this song like "Im sorry bout the attitude i need to give when im with you but no one else would take this **** from me." Then after the verse theres a little pre chorus with the vocals and a bass quiets down then kicks back into the chorus. Which is also very easy to relate to "Reach down your hand in your pocket pull out some hope for me Its been a longday all the way..."
Another simple solo that goes well with the flow of the song, into another acoustic quiter part, and once again kicks in to the chorus/climax chorus of the song. With the a little part only vocal then the guitar kicks plays, then vocal then the guitar, then a louder sung chorus.
5/5
3.) 3 AM
It opens up with an acoustic guitar and then a clean guitar riff, then goes to the verse also acoustic and a nice sounding clean guitar riff. Good vocals arrangement. I like the chorus in this song "Baby its 3 AM i must be lonely she says baby I cant help but be scared I mean oh sometime the rains gonna wash away all i believe in."
Once again Rob Thomas writes lyrics that the listener can relate to "shes got a little bit of something and god its better than nothing." The guitar for the chorus is nice goes with the song. But I really like the clean guitar riffs in this song.
5/5
4.) Push
Opens with a clean guitar alone, then the vocals and drums kick in nicely. I love the way the vocals flow in all these songs its great. "I wanna take you for granite...ya well I will" another good display of writing in this song. Once again I love the way the vocals flow! Haha, from the end of the chorus to the beginning of the verse its great another line i like "You couldnt stand to be near me when my face dont wanna seem to shine, cause its a little bit dirty"
4/5
5.) Girl Like That
This song is heavier than the previous ones (dont expect any hard rock though). Kicks off with a nice distortion guitar riff. Then they go into a verse using a same pattern like that of the Real World verse. "Well ya got to think with a girl like that any love at all...well its better than nothing" ...aint that the truth :upset: sometimes. "You would think this life would make me colder..id give into the alchohol" I like that line :thumb:
4/5
6.) Back 2 Good
Little drum beat comes in quickly followed by the guitar and some nuhaaahaa vocals, which is then followed by the verse. This is a slower song "everyone here knows that everyone here is thinking bout somebody else, its best if we all keep this under our heads" Catchy chorus nice song, but not one of the best on the album.
3.5/5
7.) Da
mn
Starts out with a simple drum beat followed by a catchy guitar riff, followed by a catchy verse. "This old world well dont it make you wanna think ****..." Rob Thomas is a very good vocal melody/lyric writer. I really like the singing in this song, and the chorus.
4/5
8.) Argue
Kicks off with the distorted guitars then goes into a palm mutting/power chord verse. Verse is nice, but I like the chorus "If you want you can get to know me well we get along so we shouldnt argue." Good song but theres better on this cd.
3.5/5
9.) Kody
Awesome song! I love the verse and vocal melody, but the chorus is one of my favourites. "Please pass me the bottle I think im lonely now" This is a quiter song, the guitar is kinda bluesy. I really like the last verse/climax/louder part of the song near the end. But I really love that chorus, and the last louder/stronger chorus is awesome. :thumb:
4.5/5
10.) Busted
This is a darker sounding song, starts out with a eletric guitar riff. The verse is really darker sounding, and the vocals are pretty strong. I can feel the anger in the verse. Not one of my favourite songs of the cd but it has a lot to live up to with Real World, Long Day, and 3 AM.
3.5/5
11.) Shame
One of my favourite songs on the album. Starts out with a single clean guitar, then acoustic then the verse "What did we learn here is love tastes bitter when its gone." Once again I have to say Rob Thomas's vocal melodys are awesome, and the singing goes good with the songs. I like the bridge very nice.
4/5
12.) Hang
My favourite song, and maybe best Matchbox 20 song. Its an all acoustic song and its awesome. Love the singing "She knows shes been her to few years...to feel this old" really nice line. I love the chorus! "We always say it'd be...good to go away someday, ya but if their's nothing their to make things change if its the same for you ill just hang." Another member of the band sings in the chorus...its a very nice song.
5/5
I recomend this cd to anyone thats not to thick headed with listening to "non mainstream" bands. I like everything from some Avril Lavigne to Metallica, Megadeth, and Pantera. As well as Led Zeppelin to Counting Crows.
And Look out for Rob Thomas's solo album it should be good.
Overall: 4/5
This is one of my favourite cd's cause I can listen to it all and not get bored or wanna chnage songs and i've lsitened to this hundreds of times. Best matchbox album...maybe one of the best 90 albums.
