Review Summary: That's who I am

I’ve always got time for Melanie C, after all, it doesn’t take a detective to work out she was the most technically proficient member of Spice Girls. Her impressive and powerful vocal range almost certainly held up the band and separated itself from a group filled with, at best, average singers. More to the point, her solo works speak more about her talent than the words in this review could ever ascribe: the likes of Northern Star and The Sea display her acute awareness for great, flowing structures and sharp songwriting that’s teeming with melodious vocal work. Even after all these years Melanie C still proves her worth as an artist, serving up a record in 2020 that is both true to her own style and contemporary sounding enough to tackle the relevance of her peers. Put simply, Melanie C is a concise bout of excellently produced pop songs that generally hit the mark with a cathartic efficiency. Sometimes Mel gets a little too caught up in the contemporary impetus of Dua Lipa’s funk-pop, and the million-dollar production gimmicks of Justin Bieber’s recent efforts, but for the most part these moments aren’t a distracting or completely dominant fixture. Overall, Melanie C is just good ol’ fun that does exactly what it says on the tin, and occasionally unearths moments of greatness like “End of Everything” and “Who I Am” which elevate the album into more memorable pastures.

Quality soundoff, staff writer.

Loved Sporty in Spice Girls; don't like her as a solo artist.
