Deftones are a superb band for a number of reasons - they're consistent ability to produce profound songs on an immense scale justifies enough to warrant them as a very special band. White Pony is hailed as their magnum opus and whilst the band have ot really got anything wrong during their history, their are some albums which have been weaker than others.
My point is Deftones are of supreme quality. Essentially, the combined the ferocity of metal with leanings towards the alternative/grunge scenes, accomplishing more than their fair share of decent songs. The chemistry between the band members is unrivalled - Carpenter's ability to meld together passion, groove, heaviness and very creative guitar techniques form the basis of their signature sound. Chino Moreno is an astonishing talent - with a vocal range boasting so much variety in the delivery, tone and power of the vocals emitted. Digital Bath presents the listener with this to a very good extent, with softly sung passages combined with some ear-piercing highs, shrieks and shouts. Feiticeira is also a solid song, opening the album. But the main strength the band possess is in their lyrics as well as their music. From a poetic standpoint, it doesn't get much better. Change and Knife Prty boast wonderful lyrics (as does every song) but Chino has a very dark style. Themes such as suicide, death, drugs and love are all covered. Passenger (featuring a guest performance from Maynard James Keenan) is a sublime track, with great instrumentation all round as well as a very harmonious duet between MJK and Chino. Carpenter's guitar is thick and full of tone and majesty throughout the running time. Teenager is a beautiful melancholic tune, featuring acoustic guitars and very lullaby-esque vocals. The heaviest song is clearly in the form of Korea where the guitars shift into full blown monstrosity mode. As a whole, this album never lets up with the intensity. The production is superb - everything is perfect.
In conclusion, whilst the band have rarely faltered in their tenure, this is undoubtedly one of their greatest achievements. An incredible album by an incredible band - I recommend it to anyone who like alternative music.
