Review Summary: A great surprise release from the best active band from Brazil
As my second review of this band, and as a fan, this is without a doubt a great EP. The concept of it is basically to expand the sound they established with their last release, "magnetite" (which I did a very poor review of, but is a great album).
1. tempo:
The first track is "tempo" (time, in portuguese) which has a very experimental sound, something the band hadn't tried so far. The lyrical content consist of the same phrase being repeated over and over but with other phrases in the back, these other phrases are backing vocals that keep adding up leading to a rather confusing song, but that's the intention here. The song's a definition of time, as it repeats cycles but every cycle has something different to it. Probably the best on the EP.
2. zamboni:
This track is a total banger, in all honesty. It has a very dissonant structure (abcdcba) but hits really hard, one of their heaviest tracks to date. The song weak point is on it's lyrical content, as it is pretty vague and without a true meaning. Not the greatest track, but some piano parts just turn this song into something really interesting and that's definately worth listening to.
3. vultos:
The song "vultos" has an interesting story to it. It has been played on stage for about 4 years but never got a studio recording. It is a perfectly paced song, with a heavier sound. It's lyrical content touches on the subject of overcoming ghosts from the past. I'm, personally, not too pleased with the guitar riffs on this one. It is a good song but it just doesn't click with me as much as some of the band's past material.
4. impulso:
This is hands down my personal favorite on this EP. Great pacing and the most pleasing and catchy chorus on the entire EP. It's change between heavy guitars and some slower riffs just had me falling for it. Its lyrical content talks about a difficult relationship, that never quite seems to work but both the parts really want it to.
5. maré - acústico:
This is just an acoustic version of their song "maré", which is incredibly more fitting to the song than the other existing version. The acoustic guitar and the lower vocals turn this into a creepy and "viby" song.
6. cartão postal - acústico:
Also an acoustic version of a pre-exsting track, but this one doesn't work quite as well as "maré" does. The song just becomes dull after a while, but the vocals are great and carry the song all the way through.
7. Phi:
This is, basically, a rework of their song "phi". It is the lowest point of the album in my opinion, the more experimental sound comes back with some synth and trap-ish drums that really don't work all that well, as it takes away any electric guitar bit, and also loses the "awe" from the original version.
Nonetheless this is an interesting step for the band, with songs for all tastes and some of their best melodies, including "tempo" (a true masterpiece). I translated all the lyrics from the album for anyone who's interested.
