So apparently this band is also called The Drink, or so does their Spotify page suggest. But heck knows. With their passion for utter old-school minimalism and slightly subdued Stephen Merritt-ian vocals, this is what I’ve been waiting for in the post-punk revival era. It’s a minimal-wave record, lads and gens. It’s an homage to the subtlest and most inconsequential of post-punk/new wave subgenres out there. That’s really it. It is minimal-wave. You can hardly say much of anything above just that. ******** (man, this feels weird to write) do the sound a great deal of justice, conducting the simplest of melodies with the most banal instrumental arrangement, but achieving the heaviest of effects. They twist and turn the conventional idea of tune and progression, meanwhile often still managing to come off as typically snarky, as a proper post-punk (or its derivative in this instance) record should. But the most surprising feature of this album is just how the executional vagueness transcended into often times utter beauty, with songs like the Christmas carol mocking “Kinderpunsch”; “Practical Song (aka The Logical Song)", which even has a certain romantic edge to it; to “Comedian”, which is the darkest and most self-deprecating cut on here. It is a throwback like no other, going into the most obscure of underground tendencies of the 80s, but in 2018. Thank you for making me feel like back in those days again.
