Review Summary: Such an underated album from the funk-metal band PRIMUS
This is the first full album of original music from the classic Pimus Lineup since 1995 tales from the punchbowl. It’s a album where the story and the mood is very important. It’s the first concept album of original music from Primus. It’s based on a dark kids book of the 70’s called: “the rainbow goblins” by Ul de Rico. The story is about 7 goblins who seek for rainbows to drink their color.
1- The Valley
This track is the introduction of the part of the land that is not affected by the goblins in the story. There is a nice collaboration with Justin Chancellor that reads the first chapter of the book in a mystical voice. Musically, Claypool play a slow and catchy upright bass riff. This song as a kind of mystical vibe to it. It’s a good opening to the album.
3.5/5
2- The seven
It was the first single from this album, it’s a very catchy tune that presents the seven rainbow-eating goblins. The chorus riff is very cathy, progressive. Guitar, bass and drums are all very good and the song doesn’t last long enough to be repetitive. The song as an old-school Primus vibe in the verse. Good song after all.
4/5
3- The trek
It’s about the expedition the goblins did to go to the valley of the rainbow. This song starts with a fantastic acoustic guitar solo from Larry Lalonde, and then continue with a really hypnotizing verse that really seems like if you and your friends are hiking and completely exhausted. After opening with a very good bass riff, the chorus is more faced paced and catchy. All the instruments are completely awesome on this track. The only thing that doesn’t give this song a 5/5 is that the verse are a bit repetitive after the second one.
4.5/5
4- The scheme
This track describe the goblin scheming to get rainbows. It was the second single of this album. This song make seems a bit like my name is mud because the bass is very percussive. The chorus is very catchy. The song is pretty short and there is not a lot to say but it’s really nice.
4.5/5
5- The dream
The song tell how to goblins dream about rainbows. There is a lot of hate on this song, it's not the best but after few listen I pretty liked it. First, the jam at the end of the song is just fantastic. And the fact that between each verse there is the ending jam that kind of “try” to emerge from the song. The verse is very trippy and kind of relaxing for me.
3.5/5
6- The storm
In this track, a storm arrive and the goblins go search for rainbows to collect. This is my favorite from the album, so far. It’s like the trek but the verse is less repetitive and boring, and instead of chorus, there’s kind of little jams in the song. This song is epic from the start to the end. It’s very progressive, experimental, catchy and genius. All the instrument are doing really well together and they are doing there own thing at the same time. Seriously, I really think that it should have been a single. A masterpiece.
7- the ends?
It tells the ending of the story. Like in multiple Primus album, it’s a reprise of the first song on the album.
3.5/5
The story is extremely important and unique in this album. There is a lot of criticism about the fact the album is too much focused on the story. Tracks like the storm, the scheme and the trek shows that instrumentation is complex and really important in track. Just with the instrumentation, I can guess what's happening in the story. For me it’s a really good album
Bad tracks: none
Meh tracks: none
