Review Summary: To exist is to comply!
Lungfish are a classic example of "you either
get it, or you
don't get it." I know that's a gross oversimplification, but that's the way it is. Repetitive, slow post-hardcore behind the ramblings of some guy who looks like a Stanford-psychology professor; that's either the best thing in the world, or the worst thing in the world. Being a Dischord band, one should expect some level of uniqueness in the first place, and Lungfish truly hit it out of the park each and every time they craft a song. While they're distinctive in the sense that you always know it's them, it'd be dumb to say all their albums or songs sound the same. If one really wants to
get Lungfish though,
The Unanimous Hour is the best place to start. Instead of just being a sludgy animal like
Sound in Time, or delving far into the unknown with
Indivisible, this one basically sums up their entire aesthetic. In a weird way, Lungfish are the most psychedelic of all the Dischord bands, with this aforementioned sense of hypnotic repetition underneath the acidic ramblings of Daniel Higgs.
I'm not sure any of what I just said makes sense, but Lungfish are kinda like that. Don't get left behind.
