Review Summary: Drowning on your own terms.

Joji, and by extension George Miller, is quite the interesting fellow. Even without mentioning his cult-eqsue following due to his myriad of characters presented through the 'Filthy Frank' YouTube channel, his otherwise quiet demeanor and sudden yearning for a serious music career has really propelled him into a far more mainstream business. Although he has previously released a mixtape entitled Chloe Burbank Volume I, in tongues sees Joji really start to come into his own, for better or for worse. Although the sixteen-minute, six-track EP does ebb and flow calmly, it does so at the cost of, well, anything truly interesting. Joji's vocals, whilst haunting at times, really begin to drone by the time second track 'Pills' rolls around, and don't get any better, struggling to find any sense of purpose, particularly on 'Bitter Fuck'. The instrumentation also lacks any true substance, staying on the path of low impact and hyper-chill. It's a shame, too; opening track 'Will He' mixes both of these negatives into an atmospheric positive that grips the listener as well as any lo-fi track can, and the instrumentation of 'Window' is at least somewhat captivating. Despite this, in tongues fails to do, well, anything. Never straying far from what is established on the first track, it begins to sink deeper into the lo-fi ocean, failing to resurface long enough, resulting in a bland listen, even if we finally have a release that is truly on Joji's terms.

2/5

Here's the stream I guess: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kU7LF5mYZkw

Really disappointed, was hoping for more of the Nujabes vibe he was bringing on his earlier tracks.

Nice little piece. Yeah I agree, everyone seems so gassed up about joji but it really is nothing special, just a throwaway lo-fi project

I didn't even think Will He was that good, everyone seems to be bigging this up just because it's Joji

It's passable at best, and horribly uninteresting at worst. Hopefully he can pick it up? A couple of his singles are worth listening to.

I'm a fan of George, so I hate to agree, but, well... I just hope he improves from here because I do think there's something to this, it's just so boring. Perhaps not, though, given the praise this is achieving. Good paragraph, short (and sweet un)like the EP.

It really is unfortunate that the rest of EP turned out the way it did because Will He is easily a 3.7/5 for me. I agree with the rest of you though, he just sort of vocally drones on for the rest of the songs. Further, I just don't think the beats are all that great. Not in a sense of poor production or that they're too bland, rather that they're not pleasant to the ear. A weird gripe, I know, but hey.

I don't know why he trashed Chloe Burbank. It was infinitely better than this SoundCloud tryhard stuff.

Pretty much agree with everything here but I think I liked how chill it was more than you did, still might bump it down to 2.5

Bitter Fuck is a such a dud though it's unbelievable

Well written review, I would've liked a little more content but I get that's hard to do when there isn't really much to say about a project

Demons is easily my fave since it's the closest to his original style. Seriously need to have a studio version of Once In Awhile, that's some proper Nujabes quality shit. Very subdued release, hoping that the EP in February has more to offer.

dude seems fine but a bit up his own ass

shame about the whole epilepsy thing (the reason he doesn't do much FF stuff anymore), but I feel like the whole lo-fi/bare aesthetic style has run its course for the time being
