Review Summary: A band that's a force to be reckoned with in the modern death metal scene.

Desolate Shrine is a band I've been following since releasing their debut Tenebrous Towers back in 2011. At first they seemed like another solid death metal band emerging on to the scene. Having the suffocating atmosphere of a band like Ulcerate and also the brutality of a band like Funebrarum. Sounds interesting right?

With this, their third full length album The Heart of the Netherworld, Desolate Shrine step their game up in a way that they've been hinting at for the past 4 years. This album is an onslaught of a heavily dense atmosphere that gives the album an extremely evil and hellish feeling, which is perfect for this type of death metal. And who can forget the riffs? There's plenty of them here and they're some of the darkest sounding riffs you'll hear on a death metal album. Not necessarily all that catchy, but they'll definitely make you feel like you got hit in the face with a sledgehammer. Vocals here are brilliant as well. Alternating between an echoing death metal growl and a black metal esque scream, the unique sound of the vocals here is refreshing for this type of death metal.

The Heart of the Netherworld as of right now is one of the top 3 metal releases of 2015. Fans of death metal and blackened death metal alike should put this at the top of their "must listen" lists. And if Desolate Shrine keeps going at the rate they are, especially after this album that perfected their sound, then they will be a band we'll be talking about for years to come.

This album is devastating, filthy, and suffocatingly dense. I fucking love it.

Sweet review, pos'd. Album has slowly but surely wormed its way into my favourites this year like some kind of cordyceps fungus - it'll probably eventually take over my brain. Shit rules.

these guys get compared to Ulcerate because they're in the same sub-genre of dm (atmospheric dm), not necessarily because they sound identical. in my opinion at least.

good review Hawks, album rules.
