Review Summary: Mtat's famous EP
After so much time wondering if there really was a good Rock/Metal band here in Portugal, I saw the video for the song 'Trip To Gotham City' on one of our Metal TV Shows, I was completely blown away.
More Than A Thousand (abbreviated MTAT) is a hard band to describe, since they change their sound constantly, while maintaining the core of the music intact. In this particular EP the band went for a more progressive sound, using unique song structures, also the music itself is slightly more aggressive than the previous release, including faster riffs and more screams.
The overall song structure is definitely the strong point, and also a downfall, since the band manages to create a great feeling with the lyrical content, making each song sound unique on its own, the song's themselves are also awfully small, for example 'None Of us Will See heaven' has a small intro, followed by a crushing riff and screams, 2 verses and no chorus whatsoever, until the conclusion of the song, followed by an outro filler that lasts at least 1 minute, making the song itself clock at around 2- 2.30 minutes.
'Trip To Gotham City' is without a doubt the highlight of the album here, a progressive sound, a bit aggressive in the start, until the more melodic sound sets in, along with great lyrics. The bridge at 1.10 minutes is an absolute killer, and i was impressed that they only used it once, most Rock bands would have used it at least twice (yeah its that good). The song is diverse and very catchy, even knowing the guitars and drums are obviously nothing special, the sound altogether is definitely great, not to mention that Vasco is one hell of a singer/screamer.
After the first 3 tracks (not counting the instrumental intro) all the songs will be more calm, ballad type 'In Loving Memory' being the stand out track and already one of the bands fan favourite track. 'I Woke Up Early On The Day I Die' is a rerecorded version of an older song from the debut album and the ending outro is just a mix of electronic chaos with parts of the other songs here and there, pretty much a mess and just a filler track.
All in all, a great EP by a band that went from generic to something extremely memorable and catchy.
