Kanye West’s label, G.O.O.D. Music, is one of the better rap labels started by famous rappers in this era, at least quality-wise. Lil Wayne’s Young Money is filled with rappers that range from mediocre (Drake and Weezy F. Baby himself) to bad (Nicki Minaj and Tyga). Roc Nation has the star power of Jay-Z, and two great rappers in J. Cole and Jay Electronica, but neither of those two artists has released their debut albums on the label yet. Maybach Music Group has Pill and Wale, but head honcho Rick Ross is a mediocre rapper at best.
But G.O.O.D. Music is different. The founder is one of the most consistent rappers currently in the game, with three of the best hip hop albums in the past ten years under his belt. He’s also had the support of Common, one of the best lyricists to ever grace the mic (as long as we forget about Universal Mind Control), and John Legend since 2004. Veterans Pusha T and Mos Def have recently signed to the label, and are currently working on their albums. Putting some newer blood into the lineup, we have Kid Cudi, who has released two good albums of psychedelic rap. But what about the future of rap? Well, G.O.O.D. Music has signed two up-and-coming rappers with the likes of Cy Hi da Prynce and Big Sean, the latter of which has just released his album “Finally Famous.”
Sean reminds me of Drake on this album. Maybe because Drake has admitted to borrowing Sean’s lyrical style. Maybe also because there are quite a few songs that have that hip hop/R&B hybrid feel. However, I think the real reason I’m reminded of Drake is because I find myself bored by Sean’s music, much like when I listen to Thank Me Later. Big Sean legitimately tries to make the album as good as possible, and he sounds like he’s having a lot of fun making the music, but he’s just too much of a generic rapper to make this album worth listening to.
Most of the songs on here are completely forgettable, and the tracks that do stand out don’t stand out for the right reasons. “Dance (A$$)” is a laughably bad attempt at a club banger. “Marvin Gaye and Chardonnay” features one of Kanye’s worst verses in recent memory, and is further proof that Roscoe Dash should never rap again. Most other songs are just completely generic. “My Last” is an average party song with a by-the-numbers Chris Brown chorus. “Don’t Tell Me You Love Me” is a song about Big Sean having a hard time leaving his girl, a song concept that’s been done many times before with much better results. “High” is a run-of-the-mill weed rap song. It features a decent beat from Xaphoon Jones, and the likes of Wiz Khalifa and Chiddy Bang try to save the song from mediocrity, but their verses are too short to do any help.
The one glimmer of hope on this album comes in the form of “Wait for Me”, featuring Lupe Fiasco. Lupe’s verse isn’t the best of his career (though it’s almost great compared to some of his verses on Lasers). The song also has the best beat on the album, as No I.D. (who has production credits for most of the album) has help from Exile, who has a knack for making normally decent to good songs into fantastic songs (see Fashawn’s Boy Meets World). Unfortunately one good song cannot make up for the eleven other tracks on this album, and any enjoyment you got from this song fades away quickly once “Marvin Gaye and Chardonnay” starts.
Big Sean isn’t a good enough rapper to carry an entire album by himself, and he proves that with this album. His lyrics are mediocre, and sometimes groan-inducing (expect to hear lines with lyrics like, “Put her hands down my pants now she’s rockin’ Sean John” throughout the album). No I.D.’s beats don’t even come close to being the best he’s ever produced, though when he doesn’t produce a song and puts it in the hands of people like Pop Wansel or Da Internz, you start to miss him. Big Sean may be an artist on G.O.O.D. Music, but this album is B.A.D.

The only good verse I've ever heard from Nicki Minaj was on "Monster." Weezy has some absolutely fantastic material, but you have to delve through a bunch of shit to get to it. I liked So Far Gone for Drake, but Thank Me Later only had a few songs that were really worth it. Everything else was super-boring.

I've always found that for every great song Wayne makes, he makes a terrible song. Of course, with as much music as he makes, he's bound to have some duds.

oh yup i don't like an album that you like and i think a song is incredibly stupid off of that album clearly this means that my opinion on the entire genre is invalidated
Tha Carter III has some absolutely sick tracks. "Mr. Carter" is actually one of my favorite rap tracks of the last decade. "Dr. Carter", "3 Peat", "Phone Home" are all really good tracks. "A Milli" has a nice beat and has an extremely sick flow. It's ridiculous. However, it also has some duds. I absolutely hated "La La", the beat was annoying, I didn't like Wayne on it, and the only redeeming quality was Busta's verse. "Mrs. Officer" is almost the exact opposite of "brilliant lyrics". I didn't like "Got Money," though that may just be because of my hatred of T-Pain. Never liked "Lollipop" either, especially after I heard it the millionth time. Don't really want to go on.
