Review Summary: If you can set aside your loathing for BMTH, and just give this a chance, you might find a track or two that actually manages to not suck.
So very few people actually enjoy Bring Me The Horizon, and those who do aren't exactly reputable voices in the world of music. BMTH fans are typically the cookie-cutter, spitting images of "scenesters"; the tight pants, the two toned ridiculous haircuts, and the typical shirts featuring the images of dinosaurs and/or aliens. That being said, I somewhat enjoy BMTH, and as bad as that is, i enjoy them solely for their fun factor, and Suicide Season Cut Up! is an album that relies on the fun factor heavily. It is completely elementary, and by no means original, but it definitely has its moments.
This album is as far from the maligned deathcore that BMTH usually plays, and is more of a mash up of techno, dub-step, and even some rap. If you are familiar with the original Suicide Season, then there's probably something here for you to enjoy, as all tracks are here, some more than once, and believe it or not, some of the remixes are... dare i say it? Enjoyable.
Every track here is fairly generic, and breaks absolutely no new ground. Some contributors to this album are Clown from Slipknot, Robotsonics, The Secret Handshake, and After the Night. I mention these particular ones because they give the album its distinct highlights. The After the Night remix of "Football Season Is Over" is particularly fun, and fans of the original will be pleased with its nearly doubled runtime and addition of some slightly above average electronics. The Secret Handshake remix of the title track is another highlight, this time cutting the runtime into a third of the original, leaving behind some barebones screaming from Oli Sykes that is layered over some nice trance music.
Shawn Crahan (Clown)'s remix of "Sleep With One Eye Open" doesn't stray too far from the original, rather relying on minor tweaks that definitely give the song a Slipknot vibe that is unmistakeable. This is one of the tracks that caters to fans of the original, as it is more or less the same, but still entertianing nonetheless. The opening track, "The Comedown" is remixed by Robotsonics and takes a track that already had mild electronic parts and makes it sound... robotic. There's even a bit of dub-step thrown into the mix on the L'Amore Le Morgue remix of "It Was Written In Blood."
There are a few duds though. The remix of "No Need For Introductions..." is essentially three minutes of random bleeps and bloops, obviously going for the industrial style, but failing as a whole. The other notably bad track is the second remix of "Suicide Season." It combines the metal/deathcore of the original, and laces it with what is presumably supposed to be trance... it comes out as a garbled mess.
All in all this release isn't anything special, but is a more than worthy time-waster for those looking for a quick fix of electronica, trance, dub-step and the like. Honestly, one of the most redeeming qualities about this release is that some may like it for the simple fact that it (for the majority of the record) sounds NOTHING like Bring Me The Horizon. So go for it. Buy it, download it, torrent it, and just give it a shot. You may be surprised.
