Paul Di'Anno dead at 66 2024-10-21 by DatsNotDaMetulz | 40 Comments | Paul Di'Anno, the third Iron Maiden vocalist and first to record with the band - having appeared on their first two studio albums - has passed away at the age of 66.
Di'Anno joined the NWOBHM legends in 1978 after the departure of Dennis Wilcock, and recorded the band's first demo, The Soundhouse Tapes, in 1979 ahead of their self-titled debut in 1980, and the international breakthrough Killers in 1981. However, problems with alcohol and substance abuse, which continued throughout his later life, caused him to be fired later in the year and replaced by Samson vocalist Bruce Dickinson.
A succession of project followed including Battlezone, Killers and his own solo project, but none managed to match the success of Iron Maiden, as substance abuse and legal issues were a perennial problem. Later in his life, health issues began to mount up and he began performing in a wheelchair due to his physical ailments, although he continued to record music with his Warhorse project releasing their only album in July.
A career retrospective, The Book of the Beast, was released in September. He passed away in his home in Salisbury.

| | | His voice, especially live, exuded an arcane, almost subliminal power. Maiden's first two albums are milestones.
Then, like many rock stars, he couldn't stand it and ruined himself.
RIP, legend
