I love how the chords are arranged over the riffing but the riffing isn't that interesting

edit: dunno, maybe I'm being uncharitable, the song's nice 'n tense, fairly compelling and not totally saturated with monomania like some shuggah can be, it's a B or whatever

I can always appreciate the talent it takes to remember all of these constantly changing meters, but man do I find Meshuggah boring as shit most of the time. I respect these guys a lot but I don't "get" why people love to listen to them so much.

This was okay. Production is meh but some grooves hit nice, especially at the end.

I did a whole review:

This track gives you a similar
merciless pummeling that was inflicted on 'The Demons name is surveillance'. We have eerie guitar peddle ambience contrasted against stacato machine gun bursts. There is the usual chaotic, post modern guitar solo to cut through the mud bath of guitar. It's all wrapped up in some slip sliding time signitures, of course, but at this point it all seems moot. Jens Kidman still sounds like he's rubbing two pieces of sandpaper together.

The track is let down by some dissapointing drum production; what happened to the more organic sounding acoustics on the last album? Haake's grooves are made to sound more rigid and the fills are less well placed and effective than a signiture track like 'Bleed'. The band's melody, vocals and rhythmic phrasing is deja vu, no matter how many turns they take, we seem to always arrive at the same destination.

They know their niche by this point and the days when they released cutting edge material are well and truly in the rear view mirror. When they release their defiantly named album 'Immutable', it will take a die hard fan to trudge through the mire yet again.

Better than Clockworks imo, but this is more my taste.

Yeah, it sounds like typical Meshuggah, but I feel there is more atmosphere/synths in this song than usual. Maybe I should go listen to the last two albums though since people say this is just their usual stuff. I don't remember the last album being this atmospheric, though.

It's decent but the production certainly fucking sucks and does not help. I'm kind of worried this is going to be an album where the production really hinders what could've been a much more solid effort. Those drums do not sound good at all and they're one of the biggest cogs in the machine for this band.

"Better than Clockworks imo, but this is more my taste."

Ehhhhh hard disagree. This song is a great workout track for sure, but Clockworks is infinitely more interesting and just expands into madness like 3/4 through that track. I do like this more than Born In Dissonance, though.

"When have they ever had good album covers?"

I mean, I fucking LOVE the Violent Sleep artwork. That's one of my tattoos lol

And yeah, obZen artwork is dope - One of the stinkers is Nothing. And Koloss is a bit too cluttered imo, can barely tell what's going on there.

This new artwork is pretty tryhard imo with the fire and the knife lol, it's like a middle school idea but I don't give a shit because their music is just so goddamn good.

If ever there was such thing as a "standard" Meshuggah song that could fit on any of their previous albums, this is it. Not boring, just typical, nothing that makes me go, "Whoa, they're really pushing their sound into new territory here." Every album has these types of songs and they are, quite frankly, the reason why listening to an entire Meshuggah album has always been near impossible to do. The average, "standard" songs are like road blocks to the interesting ones.

Here is what Tomas Haake said about the production on Immutable:
“Sound-wise, we were going for a warmer sound this time around, less harsh mids and highs in the guitars and less abrasive cymbals,” he said. “Getting older, you feel like, ‘I wanna be able to enjoy this,’ and not just be mauled and run over.”

I really like the mixing on Koloss. And on Obzen (although they are really different). But I have to agree with Tomas that they can be extremly harsh and this single does sound really "pleasant". I could listen to it for hours without my ears getting fatigued. You can hear the bass really well, the snare sounds phenomenal, the bass drum is not overly loud like on Koloss. I quite like it.
Maybe I'm getting older too.

Reading Tomas Haake’s comments above explains why the only productions of theirs that I enjoy are the last album and original Nothing. It’s mind boggling to me that he can call mid range ‘harsh’ (the guitar is a mid range instrument!) yet thinks the overly compressed ‘Pssshhhh’ of the cymbals in this new track sound ‘warm’. This is the guy who has incredible ability as a drummer and then sound replaces all his work, so it sounds almost like a midi (again, the last album fixed that).
