yeah this one bothers me too. i think a lot of people who have falsely accused people of rape or abuse have made it really hard for actual victims to come forth. they have to put up a rearguard defense from people who don't even know a thing about the situation claiming they're lying. but that aside, it can just be scary in general to bring these issues to light for so many reasons. it opens up your life to people. you might feel alienated, or treated differently by friends and family, receive hate mail, etc. a lot of people tend to bury it as long as they can, but eventually it becomes overwhelming, or maybe they get the confidence to come clean about later in life.
