New Fleet Foxes Forthcoming

2020-09-21 by Sowing STAFF | 151 Comments
Indie-folk icons Fleet Foxes are teasing the release of their fourth LP Shore. The band hung posters announcing the album's title and apparent release date (Tuesday 9/22) in the streets of Paris yesterday, and frontman Robin Pecknold posted the following teaser on his Instagram page: https://www.instagram.com/p/CFXfH9NH2ty/?utm_source=ig_embed

While specifics surrounding the release are still uncertain, the artwork and tracklist both appear to have leaked: https://weallwantsomeone.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/Fleet-Foxes-Shore-Tracklist.jpeg

Whether the album itself drops or it's a single with newly available pre-orders, something big is happening tomorrow.Shore will mark the band's follow-up to their acclaimed 2017 LP, Crack-Up.

Update: The album will be released tomorrow, timed to align with the Fall Equinox at 9:31am:

Crack-up was basically textbook pleb-tier indie folk, vapid and substanceless

Debut has the best songwriting, helplessness was a bit of a step down but still pretty neat.

"Crack-up was basically textbook pleb-tier indie folk, vapid and substanceless"

Are you kidding me? It is by far their most advanced album structurally and that's not a subjective take. It's less catchy than the previous two but nothing about it is textbook.

I thought the debut was very sweet, honest, down to earth and had lots of soul. They replaced those attributes with more and more bombast, pretentiousness and theatre with each subsequent release, thus losing the core of what made them compelling in the first place, at least for me.

Which is exactly why I loved each album more and more haha. I disagree about it replacing the soul though, I'd say it's in addition to it.

I find the debut to be very subpar. For me what makes the subsequent releases significantly better is the experience factor. I find the debut to be a slog of a listen from front to back. I also don't find the lyrics as boisterous as what they would do on Hoplessness Blues and Cracked. But hey what do I know

Joining the listening party. Wading In Waist-High Water caught my attention with that simple repeated melody. Very "opening-song-on-a-folk-album"-esque, but that's a trope I really enjoy. And the melody itself is gorgeous.

Can I Believe You. Repeat listens immediately. This is probably a single, and so catchy. Something you can just put on no matter what and enjoy.

I can't wait to see where this album goes if it's backloaded as y'all say. I'll keep you updated as I can

Masochist

Oooh, yeah, the percussion drives a lot of these songs. Especially compared to 'Crack Up', where a lot of the songs do not have drums at all, or the drums appear a minute or so in. This album, the drums are right there at the front and set the tempo immediately.

"A Long Way Past the Past"...the song is excellent. It's an old-school R&B song wearing a folk costume. I want Anderson .Paak, Frank Ocean, or Childish Gambino to do a cover of this song. But, like, keep the exact same music--just replace the vocals. Bet it would fit in on any of their albums.
