just needs to be heavier than gore with better production and we're golden
| |
ITS BEEN AWHILLLLLLEEE
Fr tho I'm stoked, all Deftones is good Deftones even finest Deftones is White Pony and Koi No Yokan
| |
finally something to hype up that might not be a letdown
| |
Cautious optimism
| |
I should calm down then.
...
Now I wanna cry
| |
Excited to hear the new album even if Gore was mostly a swing and a miss for me.
New single kind of sounds like somewhere between Gore and KNY.
Actually feeling a bit of Baroness influence in this musically.
Good to hear the guitars back. Last song on any Deftones album is rarely the best so interesting they released it first.
https://youtu.be/uY_a-5kd94M
| |
New single is pretty good.
Feels great to have them back.
| |
yall need to chill with the links that don't work
| |
It's just so dang groovy, I already love it
| |
deftones can't fuck something up so bad that it isn't at least sort of good
| |
New song is good. Not really sure why Deftones decided to put out the closer first as their album closers tend to be pretty low-key (Moana, This Place is Death, What Happened To You etc) but still keeping my fingers crossed they can bounce back from the slight disappointment of Gore.
| |
New song is incredible. Already an improvement over Gore.
| |
something about the title "pompeji" confuses and interests me in the most deftones-y way
| |
Lets fucking GOOOOOO
| |
already obsessed with the lyrics too:
So we slip into a hopeless sea of regret as I stare
Through the haunted maze in your eyes
| |
So I'll be the first to say the artwork is ass.
| |
Yeah the lyrics are real good
| |
That artwork is garbo. I really dug KNY's art and then Gore was pretty eh.
| |
very cute carbon copy of all their other tracks
| |
I’m pretty upset by the lack of parentheses in the tracklist
| |
lyrics are big alt
"the spell of mathmatics" is the title of a song
shaping up to be a deftones album
| |
Unbelievably hyped for this.
| |
I like the artwork. Suits their sound.
t/t rules. Already stoked for the direction on this album, whereas Gore didn't really hook me in until Doomed User.
| |
I actually really like the artwork quite a bit.
| |
Keen AF for this one. Even if I felt Gore was lackluster in certain areas, Deftones at their worst are still very listenable.
| |
Dammit I want new Palms.
| |
production rules
| |
Or Team Sleep
| |
I think I still like Nick Raskulinecz more than Terry Date for Deftones production but still the dude can produce a record
| |
I have a feeling the song titles will change.
| |
Dope
| |
I like the artwork but the way it looks on sputnik is abysmal
can someone make a version that doesn't look like crap when compressed?
| |
That's legit goat artwork
| |
Yeah the artwork is pretty cool
| |
"can someone make a version that doesn't look like crap when compressed?"

"Urantia"
This is the second time I see a musician being influenced by the book. I read the first pages, I though it was interesting. Although I see it more as a metaphysical book than trying to explain God's creation beyond what it says on the bible.
| |
They posted in IG some pic of a woman walking with a really long dress up some stairs and it looked amazing. Totally thought that was the album's art, and this one just the single's.
But nope.
| |
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KUDbj0oeAj0
It's actually the thumbnail of the new vid.
| |
Just listened to the new single after fully going through Come Now Sleep and can say it was comparatively absolute shit.
| |
[2]
| |
Album art is w.e but good news for sure. Gore had its moments
| |
let's gooo
| |
new single is dope, very upbeat closer this time
| |
Woman in the long dress walking up the stairs would have been the better album cover ngl. Good call Dewi.
| |
Hell yeah! give me an album that sounds similar to anything other than Gore and I'm happy.
| |
SHED YOUR SKIN
| |
just heard the song now on the premiere and WOW
sooo fucking good
| |
FUCKING RIPS
| |
fuck it’s so good
| |
I give the MVP to Abe personally
| |
Music video is amazing. Anyone notice Steph is playing a 9 string?
| |
Sweet jazzed as fuck for this
| |
The video is incredible as well, they absolutely nailed the visual aspect.
| |
just ordered the Hoodie + Vinyl bundle for this
SO STOKED
| |
m/ m/ m/
| |
Weird how everyone likes the album art so much... when just about any still from the music video would have been far superior.
| |
That lady in the dress would be such a lame album cover tbh, y'all are dorks
| |
No u
| |
idc about the album cover and i didn’t watch the video
song is super good i’m excited
| |
Idk why anyone would want the album cover to look like a late 2000's scenecore release but to each their own
| |
Couldn't you wait just a couple more hours for the video to be released so you could post this with the single?
| |
sounds like cky
| |
Hope this has actual riffs
| |
I like the one they chose, but its kinda plain I guess.
"Any still from the music video would have been far superior" the music vid is very aesthetically pleasing so kinda agree
| |
It doesn't and CKY is a good band n e ways
| |
Am I the only person hearing this awful hissing on the guitar tone the entire song
| |
seemingly yes
| |
I have p nice headphones and have no idea what yr talking about
| |
holy shit this is good, but...
Dammit I want new Palms.[2]
| |
Weird how everyone likes the album art so much... when just about any still from the music video would have been far superior.

Optical illusion art tho >
| |
crosses > palms
| |
I dig the cover art, simplistic but creepy
| |
Deftones / CKY TOUR WHEN
| |
i think the instrumentation in the song is the best part, not caring too much for chino's performance. overall, a slightly above average 'tones jam; looking very forward to the lp
| |
the verses are kinda weak but everything else is pretty damn good. KNY vibes don't hurt either, it's like an upbeat Romantic Dreams. So stoked for the record, first Hum now Deftones. New Failure would complete the space metal trifecta
| |
i just wanted more emotion from ol chino
| |
Ohms sounds pretty good, my only gripe is that I think it would sound better with heavier guitars.
| |
I'm hype as shit
| |
Just listened to the new single and I'm pretty meh in it. Hard to judge what the album is gonna be like, but man, that production and guitar tone were just not it chief.
| |
Yeah everything sounds great except the guitar tone.
| |
I liked it. Sounds like a solid 3.5 album headed our way.
| |
yea likely won’t be more than that for me
| |
i dont like your tone
| |
I'm predicting a 3.5 as well, weird that the single is the closer on the album. As a closer, this is very meh.
| |
what happened to you was such a great song, but also didnt feel like a closer
| |
What Happened To You? at least had the fade out of electronics at the end that felt epic for KNY, even if it was for a few seconds.

¡He aquí! Por favor denle like. ¿Gracias?
| |
your point is well taken though, this song is greatly lacking for a closer. its fun to be so critical of what would be considered a solid song for most bands, that's just how high our expectations are for them
| |
If only they knew how much sputnikmusic cares
| |
Maybe it will make more sense once the album is released, I noticed the beginning of the song sounds like a segue from the previous track.
| |
Rly weak chorus, not sure what the big deal is. Not a bad song but not exactly mindblowing
| |
Rubicon was a way stronger closer
| |
Theory is that the eyes are supposed to be Chi's and, going by the lyrics, I wouldn't doubt it. I quite like the album art, to be honest, it definitely sets a glitchy and dark vibe

Saw a thing on reddit that it’s supposed to be a homage to the smiths queen is dead
| |
Really damn good song. Great chorus and this beats so much on Gore already. Excited for sure
| |
i tried some stuff in photoshop, there's nothing i can do about that compression
even looks like that on spotify, apple music, etc, great job chino
| |
There's a theory on the Deftones message board SharingLungs that the eyes on the cover are Chi's. I can't call it either way, but it's a beautiful metaphor - he lives on in their music.
| |
AOTY thanks
| |
AOTY thanks (2)
| |
Digging the new song, really groovy and digging the slightly more raw production.
Sounds like if the s/t and KNY had a baby.
| |
This is better than anything off their last three albums apart from maybe Phantom Bride and Beauty School.
| |
Not really hearing where the "Romantic Dreams' comparison is coming from
| |
"crosses > palms"
Scoot out here preaching the gospel
| |
I definitely stand by the statement that the Deftones are specifically for either very horny or very depressed people.
| |
Palms is the only Chino project I don't care for. The production on that album makes the production on Gore sound like the production on White Pony.
| |
crosses > palms"
Scoot out here preaching the gospel
I dunno, tough call tbh. Team Sleep is equally great. On one hand, I saw Crosses at the small ass Sunset Strip club The Roxy when they toured the album and was four feet from the stage, Chino high fives me, I was on a low dose of LSD — but then again, Palms has Mission Sunset (legit one of the best songs ever, and they were amazing when I saw them open for System of a Down at the Hollywood Bowl. They played their whole album! I feel extremely lucky to have seen them as they played only a few shows (under 10 I think) and who knows if they’ll ever record/tour again.
Any Deftones/Chino/TeaM Sleep fan who hasn’t listened to The Woodstock Sessions, get on it now. It’s on Spotify, features a few new TS songs (instrumentals) some variations on old songs (Live from the Stage is brilliant), very creative and inspired (you can tell how passionate and into it the band are), but best of all, features one of Chino’s best vocal performances. He’s just fucking amazing on it.
| |
In the end, if I had to pick one Chino side project, it’d probably be Palms. I base than on the thought that I would be the most excited for a new album from them — with Crosses in second — but they’re all basically equal.
Damn Chino. Four bands. All legendary. Dude is from another planet or something.
| |
Really not understanding the mehs over the song. But expectations are ridiculously high (as they should be) and, even though I love it first listen, it’s very obviously a grower. All these mehs will change after a few more listens. Phenomenal track.
| |
I like the riffs but the song is overall not very memorable tbh
| |
"even though I love it first listen, it’s very obviously a grower." [2]
| |
larkin goin off tonight and im here for it
| |
the opening riff is god tier
| |
Haha I’m feeling the hype baby.
| |
I like the riffs but the song is overall is not very memorable tbh
BULLSHIT! I’m ready now, roll the camera!
| |
Never could get into this band. Where all this hype is coming from?
This song... just another Deftones track, won't change that.
| |
Koala, have you listened to White Pony, Diamond Eyes, s/t — In full?
As a long time fan this definitely doesn’t sound like some generic Deftones track. Yes, it sounds like Deftones because it is Deftones, but it does have a different edge to it.
| |
@Larkinhill - in fact I have, really does nothing to me.
| |
You're a bot
| |
lmao!
| |
I kinda liked Gore but I certainly dig this more riffy approach. The interplay between guitar, bass and drums is damn tight and Chino is in his top game here. The guitar tone alone is full as hell but what i especially like are Frank's noises in the background.. they add a lot to the atmosphere and the song is loud, immersive and somehow urgent from beginning to the end.
From what I typed this feels like a classic Deftones song. I can't complain.
| |
New song is def a grower
| |
Gore really isn't that bad tbh
| |
very cute carbon copy of all their other tracks [2]
better than most of gore tho
| |
sexy album art
| |
I actually dig it haha
| |
Yeah, it's cool.
Spun this like 20 times now, can't get enough.
| |
They got Terry Date to produce this so that's already a good sign.
| |
cant tell if the new song is good or not
| |
I think its good, definitely a grower. That chorus gets catchier the more I hear it
| |
Yo this shit slaps. Way better than Prayers / Triangles was
TERRY DATE is a fucking god too... best production job since at least SNW if the rest of the album sounds like this.
My only kinda critique is this doesn’t feel like an album closer at all... feels like it should be the first or second track.
| |
Also confused as to how people are calling this “just another Deftones track/sounds like everything else they’ve done”... first comparisons I could come up with in my head was Ever (Foreign Flag) and Blvd. Nights from Team Sleep than any Deftones song. Way more alt rock-shoegazy than they’ve sounded in quite a bit now.
| |
How close is Swerve City to Radiant City?
| |
The song is good (Prayers/Triangles was catchier IMO), stoked to hear the album.
| |
hum so that's the closer....ok...so no one misses those hidden tracks?
| |
Hidden tracks are dumb
| |
ahahah nowadays fs...I meant in terms of the quality of the songs, and certainly as closers...this will be just an ok closer...
| |
Song’s OK but that “atmospheric” static that starts the track off and then just sits there the entire time combined with the hiss on the low notes of the guitar tone sitting in the bed of the track is incredibly annoying
And yes I hear it through my TV speakers, iPhone speakers, and Bose 700s
Otherwise this is pretty by the numbers for the band which is fine by me but nothing special.
| |
yeah the production is already sounding much stronger. Gore had some really strong songs that were like idk muddled is muddled a word fuck. I like the upbeat guitar riffs here I think carpenter's on to somehing with that honestly.
| |
Hopefully it's better than Gore. What a disappointment that album was. New single has some slight prog elements to it which is a direction I'm down for.
| |
if you don't like this you can always check out the new hopesfall song hall of the sky
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ft8jMLJuAC0
| |
lol nice Storm, that song is about 100x better than this
| |
So we all agree gore is trash
| |
not a big fan tbh, sounds like any other alt. metal going on right now but because it's attached to Deftones, people assign. greater value to it. To me, this band's best album (or second best behind SNW) is KNY, so the fact they made that so late in their career gives me hope that they could do it again. That being said, I don't agree with their idea to release the closer as the lead single, and even further, this song doesn't SOUND like a closer to me. A little hard to tell without listening to the rest of the album, but I don't see any reason sonically that this couldn't be placed anywhere else in t he tracklist. I mean look at Pink Maggit or Reviere, even What Happened to You?, and then this... not impressed at all, my hopes aren't very high for this one, unfortunately.
| |
Agreed, this song sounds underwhelming as a potential closer. But the one thing I'm worried about most is that it doesn't sound to me like Chino has been taking care of his voice :/
| |
production sounds GREAT, his vocals sound like they did before the last couple albums which is all I was hoping for, they sound like themselves again. I don't know what you are talking about TVC, he sounds like classic deftones here, vocals much better blended thanks to Terry Date's production, imo. sounds like something from 2003 or so.
| |
Well shit I must be on crack, gotta revisit the last couple albums then lol
| |
the thing is i dont think you'd notice it unless you were a longtime fan, i definitely noticed after 2003 - 2006, well basically when diamond eyes came out, the vocals were mixed differently, it worked for Diamond Eyes due to strong songwriting, but the following albums, the vocals sounded more prominent which I didn't like much. All the albums before that point, were blended much better, and listening to this song, you can tell it's Terry Date producing. I'm really happy about it, but that's just my opinion.
| |
me and all the other nerds from Sharing Lungs (deftones forum) are going to be stoked because we were all Terry Date fanboys
| |
I like that album art a lot. the song on the other hand... feels like a continuation of Gore with better production. hope the rest of the album is heavier/darker.
| |
Sonically, to me, this sounds worlds above Gore. Much better produced, but I won't harp on about it, lol.
| |
You're a bot (2)
| |
Gore had some really strong songs that were like idk muddled is muddled a word fuck.
Yes muddled is indeed a word.
Love your username.
| |
Meh. S'alright
| |
You’re alright.
| |
Fanks
| |
song does nothing for me. oh well.
| |
song is dope, at least they're trying something new... doesnt sound like anything they've done before
| |
This new song is definitely awesome. Beautiful music vid too. It sounds like a middle-of-the-album cut moreso than a closer, but in the context of the full record, it might make complete sense.
| |
i think releasing the last song as a single is kinda cool. i'm not a fan of getting a new album and the first 2 or 3 songs are singles i've already heard
| |
Really trying not to abuse this song rn but it gets better every listen. The music video is also insane. Had super low expectations after Gore and so far this has me fired up.
| |
Terry dates production on this is so refreshing. I know people likes Nick’s work on KNY and DE but it just felt off like kinda tinny and this feels like the good old t h I c c meaty sound
| |
never even touched a mediocre album for my money so I know it's gonna jam, can't wait
| |
The most important takeaway is that the production isn't ass. Aside from that, song slaps.
| |
I liked Gore
| |
I liked Gore (2) some clunkers but pretty cohesive and atmospheric
I think this will be SNW pt 2 based on the leaked tracks and the seagull sounds
| |
Gore is way too hated around these parts, it has great tracks.
| |
I do really like cuts and wires.
| |
Doomed Userrr
| |
Doomed was like the worst track off gore
| |
Superlameguy!
| |
doomed was one of the best tracks on gore, correct
| |
All hail Terry Date
| |
Doomed User, Rubicon, Acid Hologram, Hearts / Wires and Gore are all top tracks tbh.
| |
I actually think the bulk of Gore is quite good, especially the title track. But for whatever reason, Pittura Infamante, Xenon and (L)MIRL are entirely forgettable to me, which wouldn't be too much of an issue except they're all placed after another so there's just this giant hole in the middle of the album that does nothing for me.
| |
Rules. Album art kinda stinks though.
| |
album art is somewhere in between good & not good
| |
doomed user just sounds like a 3 minute fart
| |
with all caps, title reads like a medical insurance plan. O.H.M.S. covers up to 90% of your rental examinations and genital swabs
| |
Deftones is one of those bands that has those songs that make people react a certain way, or not. Literally no other band has the same songs as Deftones unless they are a cover band, in which case disqualified. I can't stress enough how much they are musicians that play songs sometimes.
Disagree or not, Deftones is at least the band that did the things they did.
| |
Aside from all of chino's other bands.
| |
The Chino Side Projects did their own things they did. I need to re listen to TCSP.
| |
*the same things
| |
Agree to disagree, but TCSP are really projects that had songs that were played. In fact, all of them. Sounds definitely happened too.
| |
Now that I can agree with
| |
Lol not even sure how you managed to disagree with the other opinionless statements I made.
| |
I will always find a way to disagree
| |
You will 4 my album
| |
I've been listening to this non-stop and it's a grower. I really liked it at first, but now I think it's an excellent Deftones song.
| |
I've been listening non-stop too, definitely a grower
that pre-chorus and chorus is just amazing
| |
Good song
| |
I liked Gore (3) but it was still disappointing. It’s their fault though. They set the bar/expectations too high. We expect near perfection from Deftones. You know it’s a great band when People say a 3.5/4 album of a band’s sucks.
| |
Hearts/Wires, Phantom Bride and L(MIRL) are the three standout Gore tracks, but Acid Hologram, Rubicon, Doomed User and t/t are good too.
| |
Agree that it’s a hell of a grower guys. But it’s solid on first listen too imo. But if it wasn’t for you, give it a few more listens. I bet it’ll grow on most.
| |
not a fan of the cover art but stoked for this record. Considering how little i got out of gore it's been a long time since i've enjoyed some new deftones music
| |
I like this chill, upbeat Deftones ya.
Nice cameo of the woman from the Riverside music video.
| |
Instrumentally the song sounds like Treble Charger for some shit. The vocals are still great though.
I love how in classic Deftones style they ride a single chord for the entire chorus lol
| |
Following through with that "metal-Cure" thing... Looks like yet another dope album from Deftones, been waiting for this since I finished up Gore 4 years ago.
| |
apparently some people have heard other songs from the album somehow but i cant figure out how maybe they're lying
| |
there were a lot of poor quality leaks from instagram circulating a few weeks before the official reveal happened
| |
"Deftones is one of those bands that has those songs that make people react a certain way, or not. Literally no other band has the same songs as Deftones unless they are a cover band, in which case disqualified. I can't stress enough how much they are musicians that play songs sometimes.
Disagree or not, Deftones is at least the band that did the things they did."
LMAO...yeah they did an I disagree...or.not
| |
I'm digging it. They still got it, just think of how much mileage they've gotten out of what is basically a career of 2-3 riffs + groove = Deftones song lol
| |
September 25 shaping up to be quite the day for new music (The Ocean and Deftones)
| |
Who prefers diamond eyes over ohms?
| |
what is everyone seeing in this new song it's the same droning shite that was on gore and brought down the good stuff in kny
| |
Nah it’s awesome. Grows on you too
| |
very boring as expected
| |
Lol
| |
even notorious Deftones hater Fantano liked this track
| |
I've never hated them, just never understood the acclaim.
| |
you haven't soaked the tones' in I see
| |
that's right
| |
"I've never hated them, just never understood the acclaim."
It's not like they released classics such as White Pony or Diamond Eyes.
| |
ohms is a w/e track, fully in agreement that it's basically the same as the weakest cuts on kny. it doesn't go hard and it doesn't have a memorable hook or melody
| |
^ this
It's Deftones by the numbers, which isn't bad but it's not earth shattering either. My only real gripe is that this is the album closer, and it's really underwhelming as one. People love to point out What Happened To You? as a poor closer too, but at least it had the beautiful disintegration of electronics at the end to close KNY.
| |
what happened to you might be my favourite song on kny. i guess you could make a case for it not fitting as well with the rest of the album but that song rules so incredibly hard. rubicon was a superb closer too. even this place is death, while not the best song on diamond eyes, still fit thematically as an end to the album and was pretty decent. this is probably their weakest album closer in over a decade tbh
| |
i honestly am excited as hell for this album tho. deftones is easily one of my favourite bands and even on their weaker albums i'm usually able to come out of the experience with a few really stellar tracks, just a bit letdown by the first single
| |
I sense potential for a killer album, but this track as the first single is head-scratching. It would make sense if the rest of the album is absent of any other single material.
| |
“It's not like they released classics such as White Pony or Diamond Eyes.”
oh
| |
not a big fan tbh, sounds like any other alt. metal going on right now but because it's attached to Deftones, people assign. greater value to it. [2]
| |
Fantastic band, but Gore was mostly devoid of anything interesting, so trepidation before this one should be natural.
| |
Loving the differing opinion on the new track, I personally love it.
| |
Yeah, new track is fantastic. It's Deftones being Deftones with a bit of a new flavour to keep things interesting.
| |
they're capable of far better. hoping to get some insane moments and some entombed-like big choruses too
| |
Same. I love Ohms but a whole album like that would be pretty disappointing. But it's their first single in years, it had to be something that shouts "We're back!" Simple, straight forward, but undeniably Deftones.
| |
The outro riff sounds very similar in tone and progression to the riff from Incubus - A Crow Left of the Murder.

The only Deftones I listened to so far is White Pony and I liked it.
This doesn't really feel like a closer imo, that probably my biggest concern. It is kind of like a lighter song that plays while the movie credits roll over the screen. I could see it work in a context like that, but is that a likely scenario? idk.
| |
what are you doing not listening to the rest of their discography is my question to you
| |
Idk man, there is so much stuff out there that's worth it tbh :D Deftones are on my list, but that list is too damn long
| |
you should move them up in your list
| |
But Bowie and Genesis ... fuck, there is still the first two Maiden albums goddammit
| |
go and listen to the s/t or snw
trust me
| |
s/t is incredibly weak and homogeneous sounding. def check out diamond eyes and kny, esp if you want something in the same vein as white pony. snw is excellent too but not as consistent the whole way through
| |
S/t is awesome and has the best starting song of any deftones album. Not White pony but still great.
| |
snw is better overall than white pony. wp has some stellar tunes tho
| |
if you want something in the similar vein to white pony and better check out s/t
| |
"s/t is incredibly weak and homogeneous sounding"
don't listen to gyro, he's an outcast around these parts
| |
yeah, i'm not a sheep like most people on here, so statistically speaking you prob have a good chance of enjoying it once you see the overall avg

unlike u i heard the whole new album on chino’s private jet after we had brunch so believe me when i say it’s a goood song
| |
see, unclearich gets it
| |
he told me in private that he thinks adrenaline and s/t are shit albums and that he wishes fans would just ignore them
| |
s/t has the lowest avg besides adrenaline tho so technically ur the sheep
| |
I dig this way more than anything from Gore.
| |
nu-uh - i gave it a 2/5, so BAM
| |
don’t attempt to agree with me Ever

LMAO
| |
The fuck happened in here
| |
This album is gonna make me pull though the year, I can feel it.
| |
new single Genesis is dropping this Friday, prepare thyselves, it's heavy
| |
For real?
| |
it's not known whether it will be this Friday, but next single is Genesis and it's very heavy apparently yeah
| |
poggorieners
for some reason i thought this was just a new random single
| |
When these guys go heavy it can be pretty hit or miss imo
| |
oops, now it's being dropped next next Friday on the 18th, so a week before the album drops
| |
Ugh that's 2 weeks, far too long to wait.
| |
judging by the terrible quality leak I heard, it's gonna be one of their sickest openers. Starts out spacey and eerie then explodes. Good things come to those who wait i guess
| |
Bummer, was looking forward to another new song. Oh well, still got that new tony hawk to look forward to!
| |
"Starts out spacey and eerie then explodes"
sounds like leathers
| |
Every Deftones song is literally spacey into explosion, or explosion into spacey
| |
Agreed, haha.
| |
and thats why I love em lol
| |
Nah this one is very reminiscent of something off Koi, like Leathers plus Tempest
| |
Ahahah bloc, I can 2 that
| |
Ohms just keeps getting better, man. Absolutely love it.
| |
you guys are easily impressed lol
| |
"and thats why I love em lol"
Awh love you too
