Reptile is even better than I expected it to be. Somehow not one of those 17 minutes felt forced or filler. That transition to heavy around the 10 minute mark is so natural and delicious. also...CHVRCH BVRNER. What a fucking weird/dark/heavy-as-balls track.

My dude, ERRA is 100% melodic metalcore making them solidly 50% different from Periphery. And all of these vocalists are wildly different from each other. Both in sound and overall persona. You could just as easily say that black metal bands sound the same, or all 80s post-punk bands sound the same. Not saying Periphery is the best thing ever, because they’re not...but saying this album sounds like all of its contemporaries is just silly.

in all honesty, this is what it feels like to me: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fT5Gpp4W1cA

March 31st 2019
10949 Comments

Not sure where to start, like yo they have a brutally fast/heavy song clocking in at 3 minutes then they have a 17 minute long epic that alternates between soft and heavy. And that’s just THIS album. They have a double LP where the first half is more chill and the second half is dark, heavy, and technical. They have a couple songs you could hear on the radio, they have a purely electronic song, they’ve infused jazz elements, like honestly the reason I like them is because of how much variety they produced.

@JeetJeet
Periphery are pretty up-front about their love of and influence from SikTh, but at the same time SikTh has acknowledged Periphery as the logical next step to their sound. Spencer was a guest vocalist on the last SikTh album and Nolly produced it. So I mean, of course there was going to be a reference or something somewhere? This is not a surprise or shock to anyone.

Second listen. I dunno. The highs on this are really fcking high, but the lows are so fcking low though. But that's a problem I've always had with Periphery. I really dislike their 'look at us we're being really heavy and technical with dissonant riffs (that serve no purpose except for making it harder for the vocalist to do anything interesting)'. When they give room for melody and actual emotion (most of Reptile, It's Only Smiles, Satellites) its 5 worthy music to me.

I guess I'll throw in my two cents...right now at this time my ranking would be:

Juggernaut (Omega > Alpha) > P4 > P1 (Instrumental > vocals version) = P2 > P3 > Clear EP > Icarus EP

Like most of you, I think P3 is definitely their least good although I still enjoy most of it, and I find some of the songs that are lacking, I just prefer the instrumental versions of.

Also, I find it hard to rank P1 because it was the first and started the whole thing...definitely it is lacking in production value and vocally, Spencer is nowhere near as polished as he is now. But I still hold it in high regard even though I don't come back to it very often (and even less often with the vocals).

LelandAB

P1 has some really cool songs (Letter, Racecar, Jetpacks, All New Materials) but suffers from bad production and weak Spencer. If P1 was recorded by 2019 Periphery, it would be in everyone's top 3.

Durrzo

A re-recording of P1 would be so fucking cool.

It doesn't hold up super well for all the previously stated reasons, but I still really enjoy it, and at the time of its release it was a pretty special album for me.

It is very strange for me cause I always see P3 as being 'hollow' to an extent (for lack of a better word), and then I look at the tracklisting and I'm like "that's a good song, that's a good song, that's a good song" etc. etc. I think P3 is the gray area in Periphery's discography, nothing is bad but a majority of it is kinda playing it safe

LelandAB

but P3 has Absolomb, Flatline, News, Lune, and Line-Stepper which are all incredible songs. Price is Wrong and Motormouth aside, P3 slams.

tbh, not really. Sure Blood Eagle and Church Burner are a lot heavier and Crush goes into like a industrial/synth-wave style but I wouldn't say there's nothing really drastic overall.

Just the songwriting is a lot more linear than usual, which to me already makes it better than just about anything they've come out with.

I love the lyrics on this album too. They are a touch absurd at times (see: basically the entire concept of "Reptile") but I'd argue that most Periphery lyrics aren't that bad.

Side note: the biggest reason Lune and Absolomb were so high up for me on my "favorite songs list" was their lyricism, but I guess not everyone's into personally-tinged writing like I am.

I mean yeah, "Lune" is nigh-objectively corny but it makes it work. That arrangement is still stellar.

It's Only Smiles sounds like a Papa Roach song circa 2008, but surprisingly catchy. Still maintain that Blood Eagle is pretty garbage, especially for a single. Crush is pretty good on it's own, just seems a little out of place within the context of the album.

Rest of the album is actually pretty good, probably the best they've put out since P2.

Absolutely. Compare PTH - Scurrilous with the first 5-6 songs on Volition. Similar styles of being themed around something important to the writer, but executed 100x better. Even on the same album, "Plato’s Tripartite" is executed way better than "A Life Embossed."

I seriously enjoy It's Only Smiles. It's catchy and the ending is damn beautiful. I'd put it in the top half. Just depends on what you like. Blood Eagle doesn't really scratch the itch for people that like their more melodic or emotional material, the same way Smiles and Crush may not be people who just want heavy riffs. I guess I'm lucky because I thoroughly enjoy all of it.
