According to various tweets, Devin Townsend has invited various musicians, including Nickelback's very own Chad Kroeger, in the recording process of Empath, Townsend's 10th solo album (or 25th overall release).

Other guests include Anneke Van Giersbergen, Che Dorval, Mike Keneally, Steve Vai, and Lords Of the Sound Orchestra.

Empath is slated for a Q1 2019 release.

lmfao I am honestly so down to hear how Devy incorporates Chad into this. Probly just some choir moment, but still.

I'm pleased that he's really taken his time over this one - I mean, I love everything that Devy puts out, but the quality definitely improves when he's not rushing himself to release material.

Let's not forget that he mentioned Chad's involvement included him helping Devin retain artistic integrity rather than going commercial. Devin directly said this.

I haven't been excited about a Townsend album since Ghost, and this definitely doesn't sound captivating in the slightest. He has never put out a bad album, but everything from Epicloud onward just sounds bland and uninspired.

This could be amazing, I am actually really stoked to hear how he worked Chad Kroeger into this album.

I was feeling that way too until Transcendence, which to me was a step towards his glory days. Now he has even less creative shackles with DTP disbanded so this could potentially be his craziest release in a long time. He also sounds more proud of this one that any he has done since the original 4 DTP albums, I have high hopes.

It seems like two Canadians met up with some preconceived animosity between them and then they found out that like most Canadians, they can't be rude to people's faces so they became bros. It's a classic Canadian story. ''Do you like Rush?'' was probably the bonding moment after Kroeger answered yes (or Devin). Then they both hugged it out.

Someone called Devy the Chad Kroeger of prog? I'm kind of surprised they even figured out how to make an account.

"Casaulties of Cool was amazing though"

I love that album and bringing back Che has me AMPED. All the goofy features on Deconstruction worked wonderfully so Dev definitely knows how to throw people into tracks and use them appropriately, unlike most radio singles do.

just because Nickelback is a shitty meme of a band doesn't mean Chad Kroeger is a terrible person or can't have good input/ideas on an album. it's been common knowledge for years that he and Devin are friends so this doesn't surprise me at all, and his involvement doesn't lower my expectations one bit.

that said, the last few Devy releases have been so underwhelming that my expectations are middling to begin with.

Steve Vai was part of Triumph off of Synchestra (absolutely incredible solo on that song, check it if you're unfamiliar) so that brings me good feels.

Kroeger is a hilarious inclusion (didn't realize they were friends until reading this) but it's fine, Nickelback has put out lots of garbage but the guy does have some ear for melody and can sing. I wouldn't be surprised if the Kroeger song is actually good.

I recall Devy saying at one point that they were gonna work together before but it didn't work out cos they're just on different wavelengths musically. I'm guessing Chad eventually just decided to go with the flow on whatever Devy had planned this time around as I doubt he'd want to compromise on his own album. Just like Dev would probably have to fit into Nickelback's sound if he guested on their next album instead of changing their approach for it.

They're both Canadian but I assume quite different because Chad is from a redneck small town area in Alberta and Devin is from Vancouver, a hipster/weirdo hippie paradise and a huge city with a lot of Asians.
