Neat, I dig this band. I guess I should probably listen to New Bermuda.
| |
'Californian' Black Metal personified.
Lovely, candid video. Eager for new material. Will listen to this obsessively tonight.
| |
@10:20 - Chelsea Wolfe cameo
| |
album cover brings the lols
| |
so did new bermuda's
| |
Love this
| |
The riff at 2:28 sounds like the ending to Luna. I will always dig the band but this sounds like a B-Side to me.
| |
this is extremely good
| |
Love it, July 13 can't come soon enough.
| |
man this is good
| |
I am unconvinced
| |
it got better as it went actually, i think i prefer it to anything on new bermuda
| |
pretty standard fair deafheaven but that's a good thing
| |
"album cover brings the lols" - What album cover? I can't seem to find one. Do You mean the video thumbnail?
| |
Will check but I struggle to keep my attention for the whole 12 minutes.

first 2min are boring af but it gets interesting

| |
not bad but I think Judah and Sunbather was their peak
| |
This is fine.
| |
If they stick to the same formula this band will lose steam. This sounds like something I've heard before.

@dril should sue for plagiarism
| |
dig the song but reeeally hope somehow that's not the cover artwork.
| |
lol why the color choices for the font?
| |
I didn't like this one as much. Went on way too long.
| |
so they'll continue getting worse with every album then..
| |
sunbather was beautiful.. totally took me by surprise how much I liked it..
| |
I like it.
| |
@butcherbabe: for real? I was expeting you to say something like "with this band, being deaf is indeed heaven"
| |
I don't often bathe, but when I do, it's in the sun..
| |
not sure if I love or hate how the bass drum sounds on this
| |
There are so many other bands that do this so much better, it's almost laughable.
| |
ya sunbather was their peak. i would be happy if they just churned out sunbather b-sides tbh..
| |
teamster, I'll take some recs for something dense and romantic and atmospheric..
| |
this was pretty great
| |
An Autumn For Crippled Children, Harakiri For The Sky, Trautonist, Numenorean, Anomalie, Lantlos, Archivist, Red Shift Pilots, Heretoir... those are off the top of my head. I can rec you 25 more with a little digging in my archives.
| |
nice! drop the rest in my shoutbox, please and thank you, and i'll give those a listen.. cheers!
| |
You got it my man...
| |
Sounds too much like 'New Bermuda' and too drawn-out imo, but I did enjoy the last 4 minutes; Deafheaven always nails their post-rock segments. Also, do the drums sound way too high in the mix or is it just me?
| |
3/5
| |
Good song is good.
| |
well, that was overall pretty okay. new bermuda sucked, so I'm curious to see if they get back on track.
| |
everyone else is saying it sounds like Sunbather/Roads, so hopefully they've strayed from that bermuda sound this time.
| |
I quite liked New Bermuda surprised there was so much disappointment with it.
| |
wish they would veer more toward the 'from the kettle onto the coil' style
| |
Great track.
| |
Sounds like Deafheaven. I like them. This is good.
| |
It doesn't sound too different from their other material. I did like it though. Thought the song got better as it went on.
| |
I wish they just put From the Kettle on a new album 6 times.
| |
For real
| |
7min onward reminds me of something out of siamese dream's playbook.
| |
'wish they would veer more toward the 'from the kettle onto the coil' style'
yes. that's their best song along with the pecan tree
| |
New Bermuda wasn't too bad, Guessing the new album will be similar.
| |
The ending of this track displays exactly why I love this band so much
| |
Rules like always.
| |
Like mostly everyone said, first half was terribad but the ending is pretty sweet.
| |
that was boring as hell, the ending is nice though. and the bass and snare drum sound awful. Sunbather was great but then they just went downhill.
| |
This is surprisingly sloppy.
A shame really...
| |
I agree with the poster that mentioned the Siamese Dream feel on the 2nd half (previously mentioned 7 min mark but id argue it really starts in the 5s). It's very 90s in a good way. The first half has it's moments but the 2nd half of this song is really what makes it worth coming back to.
| |
what is up with that cover lmao
| |
Dude's blastbeats are abysmal.
| |
'Like mostly everyone said, first half was terribad but the ending is pretty sweet.'
I felt the opposite lol
| |
"wish they would veer more toward the 'from the kettle onto the coil' style"
That's what I'm talking about. By far my favorite song from them.
| |
I love sputnik as a database (and many of its users), but I'm not shocked at how douchey the reception is. There are more bands than I can list that are raved about on most of the internet but receive abject ambivalence and sub-par scores, for all but the most distinguished examples of a given band's work. I don't mean to simply bellyache over bands I love (I don't think this track was particularly amazing, though I did enjoy it considerably) but the difference between this site's ratings of tons of albums and most of the rest of the internet is, at times, remarkably different.
TL;DR alot of Y'all are hard af to impress.
| |
In fairness, there are plenty of cases of albums being overtly fawned over that I wasn't particularly moved by, so I'm probably just having a moan lol
| |
@BeyondCosby: Yeah, I've had an issue with the drums in all their albums and this is no exception.
Still not seeing how this is any better than any other well-established shoegaze/blackgaze band. I'm clearly in the minority, but I like the genre and plenty other bands, and Deafheaven do absolutely nothing to me. Nothing offensively bad, but nothing remarkable either.
| |
please shut the fuck up @thenemeton
| |
lol
| |
Solid track; I grew on me more the longer it went on. I really like the slow moving parts near the last half.
The production is about on par with everything from New Bermuda which is sort of a bummer. idk could be a pretty good album if this is what is to be expected from a full LP.
| |
when it's right it's right
ironic to defend deafheaven and calling other bands 'generic' in the same breath tbh
| |
'thank god deafheaven turn black metal into hipster shit.'
get fucked
| |
"ironic to defend deafheaven and calling other bands 'generic' in the same breath tbh"
how was he defending deafheaven? he only poked at the quality of his 'yall are hard af to impress' comment..
| |
disingenuous
| |
Deafheaven has honestly got to be the most needlessly controversial band on the internet
| |
it's prolly cuz they got a lot of attention in such a short time
but yea
| |
[2?]
| |
Everyone who thinks Deafheaven ruined black metal by making it "hipster bullshit" forgot that Liturgy already did that
| |
@mortifierftw They who's name should not be spoken.
| |
I agree with Henderson. This band doesn't seem to have anything really interesting going on, and their poor instrumentation leads to one of the few times I'm actually distracted by how startlingly off a band sounds.
| |
“Please, give them a generic death metal record with a violin and they’ll be salivating while calling it a “progressive masterpiece”
Aka Death
| |
woah too far doctuses
| |
band is very goooooood. New Bermuda had some bangers.
| |
How does that even remotely apply to Death? That strikes me as deliberately shit-starting. Death only had two albums that were overtly 'Progressive' for their time period (none of their albums contain any instrumentation outside conventional metal expectations), and Chuck Schuldiner is anything but overrated.
| |
@Xenophanes, You're no doubt right. My comments are very much a reflection of the genres I look up the most. Sputnik seems to be harsh on a lot of Black Metal related music. I'm not sure how lenient the site is with certain genres. Were You referring to Ne Obliviscaris? I just saw them live a few weeks ago in Glasgow. They're excellent live lol
| |
It's a Deafheaven thread - the lightning rod of Black Metal discussions online. Expect bantz and bullshit.
| |
Let's all soothe our jimmies to Luna on the piano :3
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fO8m6jslWqM
| |
meloshit solo is GOAT
| |
let's argue death metal in a faux bm thread, that'd be ironic.
| |
song's good minus that all time low solo
| |
ne obliviscaris > babymetal > death > deafheaven
fight me
| |
idk, seemed fitting for the thread at hand
| |
taking asdfp's trolling seriously, a bold move indeed.

I petition Darius to maintain a ??? avatar for the rest of his days on Sputnikmusic.

Take it this way - he's either a troll or a massive idiot. Not much room for any other options at this point.
| |
pretty much on sput is hella snarky so just assume they're being snarky.
| |
i fully believe what i posted, take that as you will lol

5.0 classic
Junichi Masuda Pokemon Diamond and Pearl OST

got em
| |
Wasn't expecting that riff at 5:00 or so. Very poppy and Rock N' Roll sounding. I liked it the most out of any part of the song.
| |
Oh boy, more metalhead salt!
| |
First time I ever heard the word Mariachi used in a song, 10/10
| |
loving the new pop punk sound
| |
i hate this site
| |
This > New Bermuda > Sunbather
| |
I didn't expect this news thread to be such a rewarding read, good work Sput. Never heard this band before.
| |
I'm curious about this song by reading the comments...I only listened to New Bermuda and I liked the band, but overall a little dull
| |
I still kinda hate this band for how dismissive their fans are of legitimate new wave Black Metal. R.I.P. Altar of Plagues
| |
Hate a band because some of their fans suck, makes so much sense.
| |
Aka Periphery
| |
'legitimate new wave Black Metal'
What does this even mean? Is this band illegitimate new wave BM & who gets to decide this?
| |
Does this band shoegaze hard then?
| |
Just listen to Violet and see for yourself bro
| |

Listened to this a few more times and it's grown on me. my biggest gripe w/this and new bermuda is the production. I feel they are aiming for a slightly more muffled "lo-fi" feel to align more with their black metal fanbase, but it really interrupts how huge their bigger moments have the potential of being. Sunbather had such depth to its production and that dynamicism really allowed them to create counterpoints that made the more black metal moments feel more black metal and the prettier parts feel pretty. New Bermuda's production was **fine and good** but really fell flat in that regard for me.
| |
In terms of their musical alignment i feel the opposite. I feel like they're going to this more post rock/punk vibe
| |
i agree, i just feel they are trying to keep their production quality a bit on the grimmer side
| |
I agree with both of You. I'd absolutely embrace a post-rock direction, especially where their shoegazing is accentuated. I'd want them to throw inhibition to the wind and let the production reflect it as well. Everyone, haters and lovers alike, agrees the second half of this song is where the band shines.
Either that, or get the remaining black metal out of their system so they can move on to the things they appear (as or more) interested in.
| |
So I gave this a couple more listens and pinpointed exactly where it loses me completely. First parts are great but then it goes into this weird 90s rockin’ alternative part and then in comes the cheese dick solo... whoever keeps saying “ok” to their guitar player when he’s like “what about a solo here?!?” really needs to do some self reflection
| |
Second half of the song is fine though, even if it is a little derivative for them.
| |
i feel like this solo fit the song perfectly but that's just me ... i don't really see it as a solo either, just another guitar part ¯_(ツ)_/¯
| |
"Black metal outfit Deafheaven"
Talk about falling at the first hurdle
| |
eh, it's okay, but it sure doesn't justify its length. Liked the guitars around the 5 minute mark, but this was pretty bland overall. I liked some of their older songs, but the music in this song is just making me want to listen to Brutus. They at least have some personality.
| |
a-la Vertigo
| |
yeah these guys r legit
| |
sorry sweaties but their best track is the pecan tree
| |
where's the period at the end of that sentence YOU ILLITERATE HEATHEN
| |
YEAH WE DOIN' THIS NOW ... NITTY GRITTY
| |
OH AND WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY "YOU PEOPLE"? YOU GOT SOMETHIN' AGAINST US GHOST-FOLK?
| |
(sidebar: ghost folk sounds like it would be a sick genre)
| |
that's the spirit
| |
so good
| |
i want that genre to be real
| |
the solo in baby blue was an aberration against nature but the solo here is actually good and I like it.
| |
"ghost folk sounds like it would be a sick genre" [2]
| |
awesome, still won't come close to Sunbather though
| |
this is their best work since Sunbather and even Roads to Judah so i’m excited
| |
ghost folk sounds like it would be a sick genre [3]
Probably like murder folk but slower with spoopy steel guitar.
| |
there's a genre called murder folk? that's amazing
| |
don't quite get these guys, but the song is actually sort of good :S
| |
'there's a genre called murder folk? that's amazing'
lol I think it's just Amigo the Devil- who rules, btw.
| |
also needs to be a genre tbh
| |
I like it, maybe about as much as I like the songs on New Bermuda, but I don't see why their relaxing, calm moments have to be so basic. They're some of the best parts of the song, but the drum beat and the roles of all the instruments are just standard indie rock. I also hate the chugga wugga guitars on this and New Bermuda. Also not a fan of the guitar solos. They've never lived up to the exhilarating blast beats of Sunbather. Some parts on this come close though.
| |
Spirit put into words what I could not.
"my biggest gripe w/this and new bermuda is the production. I feel they are aiming for a slightly more muffled "lo-fi" feel to align more with their black metal fanbase, but it really interrupts how huge their bigger moments have the potential of being. Couldn't agree more. It's not that I miss the Sunbather-type sound, but do I ever miss how it sounded. New Bermuda was great in its own right but definitely did NOT capture the vibe in the way Sunbather did. Found myself missing that production even more with this release.
| |
This is INCREDIBLE and better than a good majority of New Bermuda
| |
I really like this. The end is incredible.
| |
