God I love that art. Although it is a bit Born of Orisis-esque for real

Not awful but nothing I would really be drawn to again. I got sick of that main riff really fast

surprisingly solid song. not gonna listen to the leak but i'm hearing it's the best they've released since reuniting so i'm intrigued
| |
prettyy good song.
| |
Oh boy
| |
God those riffs are so unappealing.
| |
Most of the way through the leak. Typical reformed Pestilence album, interesting moments tucked away in tidal waves of extremely samey, boring riffs. Back to Spheres I go.
| |
the biggest problem these guys have is that mamelli wants to write complex music but is too dumb to understand how to make complex music
| |
^ This is a little cruel but it's not off the mark. It's trying to be esoteric but it just comes off as unappealing and crude. The full album has this same issue and it makes it a drag to get from beginning to end. I think he needs to either let someone else handle his songwriting to allow the songs to open up more technically or go back to the initial sound, because this doesn't work.
| |
Mameli has written some of the most mind bending and brilliant riffs of all times and two wankers on Sputnik feel qualified to talk about how he needs someone else to do his job.
New album is as brilliant as ever. Mameli remains far ahead of his time.
| |
For real though “too dumb”? His guitar playing ability is insanely unique and he can pull off some downright WACKY shit with astounding technicality. One of the smartest guitar players around. He may have an hilarious personality with some dudebro attitude, but his musical proficiency speaks for itself.
Consuming Impulse alone might have some of the weirdest and most backwards crazy riffs ever made.
| |
"too dumb" is obviously exaggeration but he's definitely sort of aimed his sights on trying to move more and more to a progressive direction but has lost a lot of his former musicality in the process.
this song actually gave me a bit of hope for it, since he does some cool stuff in that sorta old-school sounding chorus with the slides, but a lot of the main riffs are dissonant with no plan in mind. ulcerate this is not and his use of dissonant chords needs a lot of work imo
| |
Literally no comparison to Ulcerate. This is the same sound he pioneered twenty years ago that nobody else ever tried.
| |
ulcerate comparisons here oh boyo
| |
my point is that his use of dissonance isn't musical. ulcerate is an example of a band who can use dissonance musically
comparison ends there
| |
What
| |
the opening riff, and subsequent variations, sound crude and not very interesting, which i'm sure wasn't his intention but that's what's happened.
| |
good song, 3.5/5
| |
Song is not quite the return to form as I hoped, but still very enjoyable, kind of meh but after the last few I'll take it (hope the rest are better). Also, the first four albums by Pestilence are essential in my eyes, especially the first two being damn classics.

I'm glad I got called a wanker by some staff reviewer on sputnik for writing a well thought out comment on the details of both the song and the album. I'm aware that Mameli is a talented songwriter but his technical proficiencies clearly aren't translating into a more progressive direction here. There's absolutely nothing wrong with allowing other musicians to open up different influences into the sound of his band, especially if he wants it to evolve over time and not simply stagnate like the majority of the original death metal scene.
| |
The strangest thing is that he's managed to execute this sound much better before back on Testimony and Spheres. Now it feels, as you say, just a bit crude.
