STP Unveil New Singer

2017-11-15 by BoatJones | 42 Comments
After months of speculation, California Rock band Stone Temple Pilots have revealed former X-Factor contestant Jeff Gutt to be their new lead vocalist.

In addition to appearing on two seasons of The X-Factor, Gutt also gained notoriety as the lead vocalist of the California nu metal band Dry Cell. Gutt is the third lead vocalist the band has had in its existence, the others being Scott Weiland and former Linkin Park singer Chester Bennington (both deceased).

You can listen to "Meadow", the bands first song with Gutt on lead vocals, below.

Singing in this band is a cursed position. I wouldn't recommend it.

Is the vocalist position in STP the real-life version of being a drummer for Spinal Tap?

Put the song on, mind drifted to other things, found my left leg bouncing enthusiastically. Good sign, it rarely ever happens.
The vocalist is a nice fit. The track makes me wanna finally take a shot at STP's discography.

Don't know if he is a good fit until I hear him on the old tracks, which probably will sound like a good karaoke performance.

And the song sounds like nothing like STP.

It's not revolutionary, but nothing offensive either. I'm sure whatever album they put out with him will be perfectly pleasant, though I'm sure I'll just end up sticking to their old stuff unless I get really surprised.

Love Scott and wish they'd just change the band's name (like they did back in the 90's when they kicked him out the first time) if they're going to use a different singer.

Why keep the name? Brand recognition, however cynical a reason that may be. Both STP spinoffs failed to get anywhere near as much attention as the original, in spite of the material retaining quality. This will probably lead to more units shifted, if just for the morbid "all of the band's previous singers are dead now" factor that the comments snapped up in a jiffy. "New band with all of the surviving members of this other band whose singers are dead now" doesn't quite fly off the tongue as easy as the conclusions the thread arrived at here.

That said, the song sounds okay, easily my favourite material put out by these fellows since Army of Anyone. Has a bit of a restrained vibe, like everybody's feeling each other out still, hopefully the album will be more frivolous in places. Good on them though.

When a member dies there's no reason in changing the name.

What do you mean why keep the name? The DeLeo brothers made the band along with Scott. Their sound is recognizable and they deserve to have the name.

Why can't they just call themselves Talk Show again?
