R.I.P. William Onyeabor

2017-01-19 by theBonerKing | 9 Comments
Nigerian musician and businessman William Onyeabor died in his home in Nigeria on Monday, January 16. He was 70 years old.

After recording and self-releasing a number of groundbreaking synthesizer-heavy Afro-funk records in the 1970s and 1980s, Onyeabor converted to Christianity and abandoned recording to pursue a business career. He was named the West African Industrialist of the Year in the late 1980s. His music work remained largely unrecognized in the world at large until 2013, when Luaka Bop released the compilation album Who Is William Onyeabor? as part of their World Psychedelic Classics series. That album was followed in 2014 by a comprehensive career-retrospective box set, also released by Luaka Bop.

RIP

I'd only heard that Who Is William Onyeabor? comp a couple times before and not for a year or two, but I'm definitely going to revisit it now.

After hearing about his passing, I've gone out of my way to find out more about him and he's a truly fascinating character. Planning on going through his discography in honor of his death.

Also I highly recommend this short documentary on him, great stuff

The stuff I heard from him in that doc was really cool, so you'd be right about this being my kinda thing. Though the first time I had heard about him was through that one Car Seat Headrest song lol
